Flightplan and Reality XP

Featured Replies

OK, so I am about to blow my brains out! I use Plan G and FSC for all my flightplanning. In particular when flying GA in VFR I always like to create custom waypoints and then simply import the flightplan into FSX. I have just parted with my hardearned cash for the RXP Garmin 530 and cannot find anywhere in the manual that explains how to import a flightplan into the GPS. Am I right in thinking that it has to be entered manually? If so this has peed me off big time. OK, I can import manually, although I think that is a little absurd, but how do I enter custom waypoints? Do I assume that I use VOR or DMEs instead? If so, this is crazy, what about all the nice VFR flights that I enjoy flying around the valleys of Orbx's PFJ. Hmm, have I got it wrong or are my fears about to be realised?

Howard,

Just like real thing, you have to enter waypoints manually.

As for custom points simply enable the map cursor , click where you want and save it as a custom waypoint. It's covered on page 133 of the actual Garmin Gns430 manual. I'm sure it's the same on the 530...

You have to remember that the Gns units are primarily for IFR purposes.

I actually don't quite understand or agree with using plan g to create pseudo waypoints in the middle nowhere. If you are flying VFR then your course should be plotted as such using known visual reference points / identifiers from a sectional.

You can of course use the terrain mapping display of the GNS to assist in navigating in high elevation areas in VFR conditions.

Don't think of the RXP unit being limited, more its a limitation of real world flying.

Mmm, OK. I remember the post now CoolP, I honestly thought there would in fact be some easy way to import a plan. I guess Glenn, that I will have to read the manual from front to back instead of skipping every other page!

BTW I actually don't quite understand or agree with using plan g to create pseudo waypoints in the middle nowhere. I hear what you're saying...

If you want to use a custom waypoint or one that is not in true navdata all you have to do is go to skyvector or another program that will give you gps coordinates and then simple enter those and the name. It will be there forever.

All in all manually entering them only takes an additional 5 minutes at the most unless you are flying a 100 waypoint cross country. Lol

I was thinking about this the other day.... man it would be so much easier to manually input the FP into the 530W if I had a physical 530W mockup unit. Tactile feedback is king and the mouse clicks get annoying for long FP's.

Something like in this vid:

Oh, another question, since I've been out of real flying with the 430 for a long while: do the (real) 430w/530w accept airway entries, or do you have to input the fixes where the route bends?

route bends?

? Rout bends? There is no way to enter routes if that what you mean, You must manually enter they way points on the route.

From the rw manual, no airway entries on those units. Same as you, I enter long plans with as few waypoints as possible. Referring to your 'route bends' statement, same method here. The later units (touchscreen 'GTN') or the G1000 allow airway entries.

Ha, and agreed to that hardware 530. I was thinking about that one too. Well, I will leave it in that thinking state.

For Howard, I'd say your VFR flying won't need more than a rough route display with some airports and perhaps intersections as actual waypoints. Those are in the RXP data base and should fit somehow to your planned path. The rest is done with your eyes on the outside sim world and perhaps the nice RXP terrain display.

For IFR, you should be set when you update the RXP data to that free mid 2011 state from their forums.

Something like this perhaps....

Yeah but in 530 size.... or I could learn how to make my own hehe... ugh

Oh, nevermind looks like it's coming soon as a standalone device... could be pricey like the 430 though hehe.

Other than the VNAV button, this would still interface ok with the RXP 530 I would think?

Given the price of their 430 model and that their 530 has a 5" LCD display, I'm afraid I can only dream. Any time an ad or website says "Call for price", I lose all hope :( .

Yep, thats why I like just the hardware buttons device (in my link above) that simply links into the onscreen RXP GNS.

I wonder what they refer to with "updatable database"?

Somewhere (don't remember if it's on the webpage or brochure) they reference a Jepp subscription.
