USA roads: Less is more

Featured Replies

After the novelty of finding my "home street" wore off, I found that the number of roads displayed tended to distract me with using the product at full throttle.Yes, we live in a "sliders right" flight sim world, but in the case of this addon, less is more.I find that by setting the roads to use major roads only, I still get a nice number of roads for VFR, but it tends to clash less with the existing textures. Especially in the rural and mountainous regions where every single road sticks out way to much.I am thrilled that Flight 1 and Scenery Solutions had the wisdom to allow me to turn off all the residential roads. This makes less conflict with the residential tiles, and yet still provides adequate roads for almost any VFR solution.Full roads is nice for picking out your home, but I find in this case. Less is definitely more. And I am very pleased that I can use this product with enough fidelity to enhance my experience without road overload.

I sort of gree with you, but I think there's a bug in the program... once I switched from the default "all roads" to "only major", I was not able to switch back- the setting keeps reverting to "Only major", can only seem to change the night lighting type.Has anyone else encountered this problem? I'd like to go back and try the "all" mode...Best,Joel

It is difficult to argue with this approach.Michael J.http://www.reality-xp.com/community/nr/rsc/rxp-higher.jpg

Hmmm... not where I fly. I want EVERY road, trail, and path shown. But it is indeed great that they made it possible for each of us to tweak the add-on as we wish.Greg

Well, I'm with Greg concerning this personal preference. I want every highway, road, and 4 wheel drive trail in the mountains shown where I fly. I just bought FScene textures so I can't say I'm using the default textures anymore. But I thought it actually enhanced the look of the communities down there. And yes, it certainly is very nice that they made a utility to allow people to switch to whatever their preference is.Joel,There is a temporary patch for the switch utility on the USA Roads forum.http://www.simforums.com/forums/forum_post...p?TID=7779&PN=1Regards,Jim

>After the novelty of finding my "home street" wore off, I>found that the number of roads displayed tended to distract me>with using the product at full throttle.Well if that's a "novelty" to you, I'm affraid you will not like flying for real...We use roads for circle practice with cross winds and much more... We can see every road much more clearly then you see it with USA Roads...So.... if you don't like it here, you probably shouldn't get into a real aircraft as you will have information overload when flying to your local airport ;-)

You can also change from "all" to "some" to "default" in the "Library" by just checking/unchecking what you want.

I guess there aren't any trees where you live.

Hello All,Well, began trying to download the moment I read the release . . . took me two days, (not Flight1's fault) as I have a satellite connection and for some reason I couldn't get more than 211mb and could not resume the same download. Finally installed 'getright' download manager, and, although it took all day, as the server must have been swamped, finally managed to get all 321 mb of the file. The installation went like a breeze, no fuss, no muss and found myself staying up way too late to experience the new sensation. To say that the program is worth every penny is a major understatemtnt.FS9, as with its predecessors has been highly lacking on roads. I never have understood that from MS, as roads, in real flying have all kinds of usefull functions. From VFR navagation, (dead reconing) to IFR and using a particular road, (large highway in this case) to approximate a hold position and get one's bearings . . . (yes, even if you are a seasoned pilot with brilliant navagition skills, occasionally you CAN get lost up there ), roads, in real aviation are quite useful.I decided after the first hour at 'full lighting and roads' that I would tone the lights down a tad, but keep ALL the roads. I can't say enough about this product . . . I do believe it is the 'add on' of the year! Kudos to Flight1 and the producers of this software! It's high time that this has arrived.I'd look to MS to go to photo imageing for everything within the next few FS offerings, as it seems to be the only way to go . . . and of course, we will then have to really have 'super computers' to run FS.Best to all,Clayton T.DopkeMajor, USAF (retired)"Drac"

VCA_CEO,I think in our computer simulated world, the problem with the "all-on" approach to USA Roads is that some Autogen tiles have embedded road images on them. When you combine these embedded textures with the overlayed roads from USA Roads, you get a mishmash of roads that often lose their value as good reference tools.I've noticed in more rural and "suburban" areas, having all roads on is a GREAT benefit. But in the more urban and city landclass areas, having them on turns the ground into a strange mix of conflicting roads. The human eyeball is much better at resolving images than the computer screen - even in an urban setting, the layout of the ground below will always be more clear and "understandable" than it would be on a computer screen. From my flight training days, I was able to read the ground in urban, suburban, and rural areas MUCH better in real life than I could on the computer - even with the new USA Roads. I think until we get a 6 DVD photoreal USA set of high resolution aerial coverage, there won't be any good substitute for the real thing. :) (But I'm sure someday it will arrive)But until then, we'll have to make do with what our simulators can provide!-Greg

Will I'm with you on this one... I said this same thing before and I too am also glad Flight1 gave us the 'Major Roads Only' option. My problem with every road being displayed is it takes away from the autogen in the area. Mountains have not been too much of a problem but major cities almost become devoid of trees and buildings. I think many people are still in awe of what Flight1 has done and that's fine. It is a wonderful thing to be able to find your own street in Flight Simulator. The 'Major Roads Only' option gives me just what I need, great greenspace and major roads in major cities. I don't want my sim turning back into FS2000 (little or no autogen) over major cities because of this addon. If it weren't for the 'Major Roads Only' option, I would have removed this add-on from my machine. Less is diffidently more when it comes to USA Roads. I couldn't ask for more with the major roads showing...Thanks Flight1 for giving us a choice. To the rest of you, to each his own.... :-)

I'm in the Garden State, New Jersey. In north and west New Jersey there are countless roads that are tunnelled under trees. Even some highways like Route 23 are tunnelled. It doesn't seem realistic to be able to see them all.

Your post re: real flying makes little sense. The guy is flying a simulator where frame rate is a big issue as well as how this scenery addon intermingles with existing mesh. Real flying has the benefit of much more spatial awareness, much greater fluidity (regardless of "scenery complexity") and wider angles of viewing, not to mention real motion.

I am really enjoying the USA Roads program, at first didn't think 30 bucks was worth it, split the price with my roomate, and WOW. on his computer it just looks amazing. totally adds to the experience. During the day or at night it just makes flight sim look so realistic. Especially with the fsgenesis mesh and landclass files. Worth every penny!

"...at first didn't think 30 bucks was worth it, split the price with my roomate, and WOW."Really. Hmmmmm.Tim13
