USA roads: Less is more

Featured Replies

I would be interested to hear from anyone who has purchased this program and is running it on a low end PC, or can that even be accomplished? Specifically, a 1.4 with 1 gig of memory. Is there a performance hit?ThanksChris

I was originally concerned about this too, Chris. On my AMD 3000+/1Gig PC3200/9800XT system I've seen no performance hit. This shocked me, as I figured there had to be some performance price to be paid for this enhancement. Kudos to the developers. Here is Sacramento from 20,000'. Compression made a nice pic not so nice.http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/81127.jpgGreg

It seems like one answer to this issue is to utilize modified city/town textures that do not have the roads. This is probably a fairly massive project, but probably worth it considering how popular this USA Roads seems to be. Perhaps Flight1 could even release optimized replacement textures for use with this product.

What we need is to add every house, driveway, tree, street light, office building, parking lot, store, restaurant, etc (you get the idea) to blend the roads better. We might have to wait a few more weeks for that one :) I personally like all the roads on. The problem I have is not finding roads, but making sure that from 3000+ feet that you are following the correct road.

I wish there was a workaraound for the Autogen problem (ie that you lose most buildings and trees with all the roads on). To me that's the only weakness of this great package.Best,Joel

>We can see every road much more clearly then you see it with USA Roads...I have to totally, utterly disagree. I'm not sure if you have flown lately :+Check out this picture I took over New Jersey a few months ago. Every single road isnt popping out before your eyes and its not a huge obnoxious road like the default FS roads are.http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/81151.jpg>We use roads for circle practice with cross winds and much more... We can see every road much more clearly then you see it with USA Roads...Turns around a point...yes...yes... What state/country do you live in? Your roads must be pretty huge to stand out more than the FS roads. >So.... if you don't like it here, you probably shouldn't get into a real aircraft as you will have information overload when flying to your local airport So.... I'm doubting if you fly in real life or not. As a matter of fact, I believe the author of this post is a United pilot, you should really not act superior when you have no idea what your talking about. Please don't discourage others about GA flying, you have done it once here, and your surely going to do it again.Jason :-wave

Howdy,"I wish there was a workaraound for the Autogen problem (ie that you lose most buildings and trees with all the roads on). To me that's the only weakness of this great package."It IS possible to remove the autogen deletion effect of the roads. In the terrain.cfg file, each road type has a flag, "ExcludeAutogen=", which can be set to either "1" (yes) or "2" (no). I don't know what road types USA Roads uses so it might take a bit of trial and error. Also, the downside is that you will end up with buildings and trees right on top of the streets. However, it should be possible to keep at least the wide roads free of autogen by disabling the excludes for the smaller road types only. Cheers, HolgerP.S.: I don't own this package so others would have to do the testing.

Hey there,Could some of you guys that are using the Major Roads Only option please post some screenshots (maybe a couple of large/smaller cities)? I'm considering getting this awesome-looking product, but I think I'd like to be able to compromise on roads/autogen. Thanks!MikeKPHX

Here you go Mike... Like I said above, what more can one ask for with the 'Major Roads Only' option. You have a perfect blend of great autogen with all the major highways present. Over major cities this is more realistic to me based on my real world flying experience. You have to really work in a real plane at 3,000ft to make out 2231 Jamaica Ln... When I'm doing VFR flying I concentrate on the major roads only as reference. I could care less about side streets. I need autogen because just like in the real world you'll also use buildings as check points. The extra roads in 'US Roads' takes away from that. Buildings and trees are more important reference points in the real world than side roads unless your out in farm country. All I need is the major roads and this add-on reproduces that perfectly...http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/81164.jpg

Thanks, Dillon!Yes, I think that'll be the option I go for...seems to be the best of both worlds. Most of my flying is IFR at FL350 as it is, and so I don't necessarily need to see my street/house, but realistic highways and major streets is still an incredible improvement over the default. How's it look in small towns, like Aspen?Mike Tucson, AZ"You must be the change you wish to see in the world"--Mahatma Gandhi

Hi Michael,"Autogen won't place buildings/trees on top of your USA Roads."My statement above applied only to the case of editing the terrain.cfg file in the manner I described. It's just an idea for people to try that want to have autogen in between dense street grids.BTW, I made a mistake in that post above: the flag for ExcludeAutogen off is "0", not "2". Sorry about that. All the required information can be found in the "Terrain Config File Doc" of the FS2004 Terrain SDK package.Cheers, Holger

I have to agree with you Jason on this one...

Just did a flight with the new freeware C-206 from Hyannis Ma. KHYA to Portland Me. KPWM, Great program!!

Hey Chris!I have a PIII 1 GHZ system with an older Nvidia Geforce 4MX card running Dual 17" monitors under Windows XP, and with USA roads I have seen NO performance decrease! This add-on is cool! Also, I am using it successfully with Eddy Denny's RealScene for the US and the roads are blending just fine!Happy Simming!Scott :-)ATP/CFII - KCOS
