*rumor* Apple to release smaller iPad

Now the only reason I bring this is up is because it could be more affordable than the latest full size offering, which could fit an external EFB of some sorts into a tight flight-sim/ real aviation budget more easily.

Any thoughts or criticisms? I think they're going straight for the heart of the Kindle Fire and the likes

Seems like they are jealous of the Kindle Fire and the Galaxy Tabs that have been selling.

I don't think the smaller ones would work as well as EFB's. When I was flying the King Air I had my iPad 2 for all the charts and with that big screen I still had to scroll around to see everything on the approach plate. I think it would be quite annoying to try to fly off anything smaller.

Hmmm, They probably want to make something more convenient and versatile. Something in between a standard iPad and the iPod Touch.

Thanks,

Kevin L

Though I want to agree, I have to say the iPad is unwieldy for me in the cockpit. The Kindles have a dimension close to that of paper approach plates, so I can get on board with that. No pun intended.

Wouldn't a smaller ipad just be an iphone? I can't say I share the interest in Apple products. Here in Poland they are so over-priced in comparison to other products that I just don't see the attraction.

Over 10 years here and AVSIM is still my favourite FS site :-)

They probably want something the same as the Samsung Galaxy Note or the Goggle Nexus 7, as they have won their court case in the usa i guess they can do what they want and like normal and if anyone complains take it to the usa courts to win.

Apple really want more of the 68% android pie :)

I don't think "jealous" is the right word for what Apple is doing. They are responding to market demand, being competitive, and will of course, "CRUSH" the competition.

The new Google Nexus 7, (made by ASUS) has been selling out, since it's release. It's a 7" tablet, that has the same screen size as a Garmin 696. IMO. it's the perfect size for a yoke mount. However, just like the Ipad, it's just not near as readable in bright sunlight, as the Garmin 696 GPS is. I sure like the Nexus 7 graphics though. I'm using the Garmin Pilot 30 day demo.

Apple had a god complex before they won against and now, things will get worse before they get better imo besides at there current release rate there is a small chance they could end up being another Nokia.

Hell even the Apple name they used was not there's to use and they did not have permission to use it until recently as apple was a registered trade mark of The Beatles which was registered in the 60's but they sold them the name a couple of years ago.

I don't care for apple as they like other major company's set a bad example to the rest of us.. its ok to steal other peoples work and make billions in the process knowing the people they steal from don't have the money to take them to court.

Nice tablet.....NO CAMERA!

There is a front facing camera only. At $199 (8 GB) & $249 (16 GB), they left it off the circuit board. From what I've read, it does appear to have a space on the board for one.

I don't necessarily need a camera on a yoke/panel mounted tablet. To take that further, I never use the camera on my iPad. At any rate, that model does have a camera. You'd be hard pressed to find a modern tablet that doesn't...

Why crush the competition in the (unpredictable) marketplace, when you can just sue them to death in court?

Apple is doing everything to make sure Samsung's Smartphone success (see below) is not repeated in the tablet arena. And it seems certain they want the phone dominance rolled back as well.

Both companies are being careful about how they do this though, as there are an awful lot of Samsung parts in Apple products right now, which means an awful lot of Apple money helping Samsung's bottom line.

Im pretty sure Apple will see out Samsung and all its other competitors before they're another Nokia!

I dont think 'steal' is the right word. Apple sure have changed the world and for the better. I mean look at the tablet market... Apple dominate it with the iPad, Part of it is due to the fact that its an iPad and everyone "needs one" but they produce really awsome and well made products.
