September 9, 201213 yr Fabulous Ophir, from which came gold, and amber, silver and sandalwood, precious stones, ivory, apes and peacocks! Such is man that he recalls the ancient legends and gives their name to his new sources of treasure. When gold was found in the Yukon (Koyukuk) hills West of what is now McGrath, the miners called their camp Ophir. In hopes, no doubt, of wealth to come. At its height, this was not a large gold rush and had at most 200 people. Now, it is abandoned, as is the gravel strip (but we still have it in Flight!) There is still some activity in the area, but the Ophir gravel strip itself only serves once a year as a checkpoint in the Iditarod Trail Race. I landed there at the end of a flight: It looks so inviting next to the Ophir Creek, but watch out for the trees! After landing, I shut down and left the Cub parked at the edge of the strip in the middle of a squall: Next day, early in the morning, I decided to take the Cub out for some scenic flights in the area. It was early dawn and the sun was just illuminating the tree tops: That golden color of the trees in the sun reminds us of the promised treasure. As I was climbing out in the penumbra, the sun was just rising over the horizon: A little more altitude and I was out of the shadows: My flight plan for the morning included visits to some small strips in the area with a final landing at McGrath: Yankee Creek was also a gold town, and the strip is surrounded by trees and hills, lots of them! It looked a little difficult from the air, and I did about a half dozen passes trying to figure out the best way to land: But, I finally made it and breathed a sigh of relief. Instead of continuing to McGrath, I decided to stay in the area and continue visiting these great and fun strips. The terrain is spectacular and landing is a real challenge. Highly recommended. September 12, 201213 yr Hi, The flight plan diagram posted by Luis sparked my interest in using Plan-G. When I started it I saw a message indicating that a new version of Plan-G was available. I proceeded to remove my existing version and install the new. The new version no longer uses Google data. No contour mapping available. I presume this is a legal consideration. It seems that Google refuses to play nice with anyone anymore. Jim F.
September 12, 201213 yr The graphics display figures are by EVGA's Precision X utility, available on their web site. Luis - I installed this for both Flight and FSX, but all I can get on the screen is my frame rates. I checked the box in the setup for GPU temps and memory usage, but don't get them. Any hints as to how to make this work? Thanks. Thank you. September 13, 201213 yr Author Hi Rick, Please be sure to check the proper boxes at the bottom of the dialogue: Jim, please don't forget to select the Terrain button at the top of the plan screen. Best regards. Luis Hot, humid Caribbean paradise!
September 13, 201213 yr Luis, The "Terrain" selection button doesn't seem to be available in Plan-Gv3 as it is in 2. Fortunately, both versions can co-exist without problems. In 3 there are various data sources available in the Options but I couldn't locate anything comparable to the Google data. Jim
