AS2012+REXE+NGX= heaven

using REX-E with AS2012, how are you combining?

Use REXE to install weather textures, use AS2012 for the weather... so in other words.. when u are flying, you will not have rexe running at all. Once you config what kind of clouds/runways/water/etc in rex, your done with it until you want to change something.

and get the weather they give you rather than reported?

I've never really taken issue with the weather interpolation method of ActiveSky. Certainly not enough to warrant shelling out $44.95 on another program. Sure there are shortcomings with it...and as technologies advance and new methods are found, software will get better and better.

My main beef is the way some of these addon developers are pricing their software. FS2Crew charging $40 for their RAAS offering, and now Opus charging $44.95 for a wx program. To me, that's ridiculous, and I refuse to patronize businesses that...in my opinion..overcharge for their product.

I think everyone will agree with me that it was one of, if not THE best purchases of an fs addon.

I'm sure it's an amazing add-on, but I already have AS2012 and am quite happy with it and don't see the logic in buying another add-on that does the same thing only to use it's textures.

I've been having a look at FEX lately. Anyone have any thoughts on it? Or do the textures that you get with REXE still outshine everything else?

I get what ya saying... my number is 35... once over that... I consider it carefully. It's why I'm holding off on Opus. I already shelled out bucks for TrkIR/REXE/EzDok... no need to buy all that again unless the replacement is light years a'head.

I keep hearing how Opus doe great weather, but looking at the screen shots, I read "30 min update"... so it DOESN'T update as U fly?? You set the update timer just like REXE?? ##### I wanna buy a program without REXE's unbelievable textures to do the same thing as REXE.

All the weather addons have an update timer. It is adjustable just like the others. The big difference between REX weather engine and OPUS, is that OPUS works like a weather addon should.

thanks mate, one little maybe stupid question, if i install certain textures, it'll be presented till i change, but a lot of times the clouds, sky textures won't match what's going on outside, while AS2012 installing related textures, am i right? thanks!(;

Opus isn't just a wx program, does weather, cameras, and also ability for you to use it to set up multi screen views on networked computers. The reason so many comment about opus with regard wx is because it actually gives you weather you'd see if you were there. Enroute weather accurate, fixed the silly wind shifts etc. also the developer daily updates and adds features to it, no 3 months silence found on that forum! Opus is good now, but will be even more amazing shortly.

I like OPUS. The weather functionality is amazing. The dynamic head movement has allowed me to get rid of ECZA freeing up memory. I hope to use the multi window functionality when I build my cockpit. The author support is superb, and they fix bugs, release new features within a few days. AFAIK, Rex essentials was release a while ago and I'm still waiting for SP1. I've given up on the REX weather.

OPUS is easy to setup, and it just works.

You getting confused here, all aviation weather is only published every 30 mins(excluding specials etc) but what is put out for software to read is every 30. Mins. so all software only updates your weather every 30mins as such. Where the updating sooner than 30 mins comes in is to do with fact you moved and may be in a different area of weather it's whether fsx then updates your weather to reflect the weather you should be seeing now in that location, even though it still based on a report 20mins old.

There will always be limitations on the weather you see in fsx based on where it gets the data from, airport tafs and the data they contain. For example most uk tafs don't report cloud above 5000ft. In essence you could have a taf saying cavok yet outside you couldn't see the sun for the layer of cloud above 5000ft, however fsx may then give you blue clear skies, this is where the software uses some clever elements to determine other tafs, and also specific meteorological conditions which can help suggest that certain conditions may exist also, such as temp differences, time of day, time of year etc.

There are limitations with fsx, but also even if Microsoft came and fixed the bugs in the engine, you'd still get limitations.

Does anyone know if Opus accurately predicts winds aloft like AS2012 does? If it does, can the data be imported into applications such as FSBuild when planning flights? This would be a key feature for me if I was to consider getting this.

Enroute weather accurate, fixed the silly wind shifts etc.

I actually find that ever since I got AS2012 I no longer have the crazy wind shifts that I once had so it does well in that respect. Previously I was using the free FSRealWX for weather and those wind shifts almost drove me insane.

Sounds interesting but find it difficult to want to spend $38 on REXE if I'm only going to use a small portion of it such as textures. I will admit that I probably don't use all of the features of AS2012 but I do rely on it for some flight planning elements such as winds aloft, temperatures etc. REXE seems to come with all those features as well.

Personally I'm perfectly happy with AS2012 textures. I understand many people think REX textures look better, but not by a large enough margin to spend an extra $40, IMHO.\

Edit: I just noticed this is the PMDG forum. Sorry for continuing to steer off-topic.

but what is put out for software to read is every 30. Mins. so all software only updates your weather every 30mins as such.

thank you for the clarification. I've seen enuff good post to be interested.. ill wait for rexe update, and make a move if it's not up to snuff.

This thread was helpful, thank you all.

Thanks guys, super thread. I am running NGX + GEX + UTX + REXE + EZdok now, will get AS2012 for WX after I have tried REXE+, if there are still limitations in the RT WX.

Regards
Morten Steen
Sent from my iPhone via Tapatalk
