Photoreal/VFR scenery

Featured Replies

Thanks for all your helpful advice. GenX does look tempting but will see what orbx come up with also!

There seems to be a lot of UK photoreal scenery on discount rignt now, wonder if thats anything to do with the pending ORBX....

I did just buy the JF SE scenery - £2 from CEX, so that was a bit of a bargain. Very impressed, and would buy the Central scenery to go with it...but I'd better wait and see.

Cheers

Hello

If anyone is interested in the whole of Spain including the Balearic's and Canaries at a resolution of 1pixel/meter for free, then the links and install instructions in this PDF will keep you busy downloading for a while:

In regards to scenery , can anyone shed some light on this subject . Since installing orbx Australia if I'm sitting on ground or whilst taxiing if I go to a outside of cockpit view my scenery and ground equipment and plane I'm using jumps . Any ideas?

Mad Dog,

Is there anywhere I can get that Spain scenery (or part of it) without using torrent downloads? I am specifically interested in Cadiz and Malaga (the scenery areas around Gibraltar)

Hello christopher.

Not that I know of, Torrents are really the best way of distributing very large files such as these.

As these have been produced by enthusiasts and released for free it would cost the authors a fortune in bandwidth charges to host and distribute these themselves as direct downloads.

There is nothing inherently wrong with torrents as a distribution method, this is also the way NL2000 is distributed.

Edit:

Looking in the PDF at the links given for Cadiz, the individual rar files are available as direct downloads from http://uploading.com.

Just copy and paste the links from the document into your browser.

The areas you are interested in are:

Oh My Word. 120GB download :O

My limit with BT is something ridiculous like 10GB per month  Already been caught out a few times and had to pay for the privilege.

Canaries and Balearics sound tempting though.

Also presumably it's better to start off small as I guess there's no products that cover the whole of Western Europe?! That being the case can anyone recommend a UK offering?

Thanks!

Actually there is, it's called FSAltitude Western Europe http://www.fsaltitude.com/index.htm

It's basically very low resolution photoscenery suited for airliner flying.

Now, I recommend you to read this review (although it's not about this Western Europe one but about Australia & USA, but anyway they work same way, it should give you an idea about what this product looks like and how it works:

http://www.avsim.com.../FSAltitude.pdf

So basically this product allows you to see default FSX terrain around you when you are at low altitudes and then when you fly higher from normal cockpit view you see real world terrain around you, though directly below your aircraft there still is a circle that shows default or any addon scenery that you have installed below this one. It's compatible with any other sceneries.

It's only available boxed, I ordered it some days ago from pcaviator Australia, actual site of this product looks pretty outdated and someone reported problems with ordering from there so if you are interested I suggest you trying to search for it from somewhere else, maybe PC aviator.

I think based on this review it's really huge improvement and makes cruise phase of a flight way more interesting.

Ah that's really good, been lately searching for photosceneries around Mediterranean area as my new private virtual airline is based in Malta.

The reason why I suggest you hang on for a short time, I mean maybe a couple of weeks, and forgive me if this is common knowledge to you, is because Orbx is about to release the first of their European sceneries.

GenX does look tempting but will see what orbx come up with also!

Just to be sure: Orbx regions are NOT photoreal, which was what you were looking for. Orbx is generic landclass based scenery. Looks great/awesome/whatever but it is NOT photoreal! Just so you know...

Thanks for pointing that out, Jeroen. I was always under the impression it was photoreal. Now I know why the golf course is missing in this thread.

Orbx DOES include photoreal scenery in parts of its products. Mainly the points of interest.

Gavin Price

The OP in the thread I linked to in my previous post said the golf course isn't there. But in that same thread OE-LAT claims it is there. I can't tell really, as I don't have Orbx PNW myself.

True, but I think that 99% of the regions (like PNW) are generic. I think mainly some high mountains are photoreal. The addon airports from Orbx ARE photoreal btw but those are of course just very small regions.

Well, even if it IS there, it will be a generic golf course texture and not the real golf course. Orbx does have very good and detailed landclass but no matter how good it is, it still is generic.

Mind you, to me that's not a big problem because I don't know the Orbx regions from real life and to me it looks pretty real (more real then other scenery addons). Obviously it would be awesome if we could have the entire PNW region in airport addon quality (photoreal and all) but I think that won't happen in a decade or two. Unless someone comes up with an entire new technology. (I hope to see it in my lifetime...!)

I have already stated in the other thread - and now I feel I might say it here, too - that I made a mistake there, and th egolf court isn't there in PNW. But still, for me the same apples as for Jeroen, I don't know the PNW nor any other ORBX region myself in real life, and as long as the atmosphere seems right, I won't complain.

Thanks for checking up on that golf course, OE-LAT. It certainly isn't a show-stopper if it's not there. The Orbx scenery I've seen in the screenshot forum is some of the nicest I've seen so far.

I don't know the Orbx regions from real life and to me it looks pretty real

Very true. Thanks Jeroen.
