I've just joined the ranks of Opus fans. I've been an ASE/2012 user for...yonks. I really couldn't see that 2012 could be bettered. Wrong!

The depiction of misty, foggy, low visibility conditions immediately made FSX, for me anyway, a whole bunch more serious.

This evening I did a short hop from Corvallis to Hobby, about halfway, the dense fog I took off in gave way to a lighter fog. Great. I took off and did the return journey. Wouldn't you know I ran into the heavy stuff about 10 miles out of Corvallis. Fabulous!

I've read a lot of the angst ridden posts on AVSIM about Opus and frankly I was a bit put off by the intensity of the 'for and againsts'.

Anyhow, I tried the demo for 20 minutes and that was it. Sold to the old guy in the gravy stained sweater.

A serious word of advice to anyone buying it. RTFM! Twice or even thrice!

Cheers

I had no trouble setting up the Weather engine, but I just can't seem to fathom the Camera creation part. (I've got the same colored sweater you do!) I'm hoping someone will make a video of the process so I can enjoy the camera functions.

Indeed Opus is amazing, used Active Sky Evolution for a long time before I finally made the decision to try Opus.

Now I just need some more time to actually fly. Thankfully in a week I will start new course with my studies, it will be way easier than the one I have been doing for last month so I will have a lot more time to fly around FSX.

Since moving to Opus my missed approach "practice" has gone WAY up!

Hopefully you guys are trying the same location using the same metar info with both programs before drawing a conclusion? I've noticed every bit of praise is about fog.

Are there any side by side comparisons? As a real pilot, AS2012 has been pretty darn accurate at my local airport. Simply having more fog doesn't seem to be a good thing.

You guys really are convincing me to buy Opus...but I want to try this demo. Where is it? Anything not included?

EDIT: I must be blind, there it is right in front of me. Downloading now!

Zach,

it's a Flight 1 offering. That 30-day money-back guarantee doesn't come any better. Why not buy, try and then return if it isn't all you expect it to be? Easy enough.

I'm still waiting for the Winds Aloft upgrade to be implemented. Until then it's still AS2012 for my heavy iron stuff.

That is a drawback, not knowing what the real weather is at a given point, (won't try UK until Orbx UK is released) Opus just felt more real, more believable. The fog doesn't hit the ground with a straight line, if you know what I mean.

Honestly, I wonder why a comparison hasn't come sooner considering the profound statements like "revolutionary". AS2012 has some revolutionary features, and they all work well. Everything mentioned so far with praise is already done in two other programs, and the screenshots aren't looking any different from my weather depictions. It's just that something seems odd about the praise given the fact I've seen nothing new, yet.

This isn't an AS/REX vs. Opus post. Rather it's months of seeing praise when I can't see what the big rant is.

I know I probably need to make a disclaimer for those who want to pick a fight, but I'm not going to. I'm curious.

Excellent. Thanks for taking the time, Ron. But AS2012 doesn't do that to me.

Anywho. I reckon since I have to ask, I don't need the product!

Since you mentioned AS2012, I`ve tried both and Opus is far superior it feels the clouds are actually there and not just textures placed around. It completely changed FSX.

I think the simple answer is that the fog is one of the most "noticeable" things about it, and that is not the only reason people are praising it.

I'm all ears...

Interesting. This is one of the reasons I like AS2012 so much. Clouds "pivot" less.

I'd be very interested in some comparison shots in the screenshot forum since you both own both programs.

Ugh. Breaking out the credit card now. Dang this addictive hobby of ours.

All ears about what?

I am unsure of the actual question. There are hundreds I am sure reasons different people like it.

One of the biggest reasons I "praise" it is because this is my first working weather engine. I have owned REX and tried theirs and couldn't get winds working 20kts or degrees. Also the Baro was set at one number and never changed.

That is one of the real reasons I like it. It gives me what I see out my window.

Another is I don't get flashes, all weather clearing out and then popping back in my face when it feels like loading back in.

Or the fact that it is a DHM, Camera Addon, and weather all rolled into one. Nice for all different flying. I can switch to camera view mainly for bigger aircraft that TrackIr is not the best for me, or to TrackIr and GA. With it without DHM. It's all up to my mood.

It has a simple no nonsense GUI, I like the non flashy all business look to it.

I like the support, it is great. I was told and so were others to just wait for who knows how long to get an update on just getting Baro right from another addon Dev. Not bashing them, but I fly online and like to have what the controllers have or darn close to it when I do.

The fog and mist don't look like someone took a pencil and just drew it around elevations. It blends. Pockets of clouds are in and around mountains. I like that also.

What I am getting at, is that it is a lot of things in one people like. A little for everyone and while I don't have ASE, OPUS is the best for me. That's why I praise it.

I own a Toyota 4Runner currently, and I have has 4 before it. I love the Yotas. I have never owned a GMC or Dodge, but I praise Toyota.

I get the feeling lately a lot of people are having to feel they need to explain why they like something new or different but it is hard to do that because many people I am sure like many different things about it.
