Fully Left..fsx, fully right...fs9

Featured Replies

Hi

Does a plain FSX installation (+SP1-2 or acceleration) with most sliders to the left (if not all) still look better than FS9 with sliders fully right with tons of ground scenery addons? My guess is if they are really that poles apart, the theory should be correct. I dont have the FSX yet, so I would be very happy if someone would post a plain fsx screenshot with all sliders to the left. (O yes I have searched down the internet, and no one has bragged a plain fsx screenshot with all sliders to the left, ^_^ ).

I cant remember a time when I ran my FS 2004 and FSX with nothing extra installed in each Sim, so I would never be able to compare them now!

I do know, at the moment, that overall, my FS 2004, with lots of add-ons, really does look, and perform very much better, than my FSX with a few add-ons.

But it really would be interesting to compare both Sims running; "straight out of the box"... ...!

Hi Fozzer. It is always amusing to read your posts.

Seriously, it is better than a plain fsx? phew, should I give it a try?

..... ....!

There's always the argument over FSX v FS 2004...(a bit like Windows and Apples)... ...!

But having both Sims from the day they were each released, and running both, for some reason I could never drag myself completely away from FS 2004...probably because it has given me so much fun for so many years....

..and my rather old/ancient hardware copes with it very much better!

FS 2004 is like an old friend, who serves me very well!

...its quite amazing what can be done with it!

Paul...FS 2004+ FS Nav....and FSX!.... ...!

I switched from fsx to fs2004 and I can tell you that fs2004 looks and performs better than fsx. Let me explain what I mean:

I did a test in both sims at fsdreamteam ohare with full ai. I use world of ai for fs2004 and ultimate traffic 2 for fsx. I used active sky evolution in fs2004 and default "fair weather" in fsx. I flew the quality wings 757 in fs2004 and the level d 767 in fsx. In fs2004, I locked my fps at 25 and it never went below 23. In fsx, I locked my fps at 25 and I was getting about 13 fps. I decided I was going to lower the sliders one by one in fsx in order to get the same fps as fs2004, and I ended up only achieving 18 fps and the scenery looked much worse than fs2004 and it had even less autogen!

I came to FS9 after FSX. Honestly, to my eye, it looked about 90% as good, except that it runs with a much higher framerate for equivalent settings. I've not tried it, but FS9 ful-right would blow FSX full-left out of the water visually, and probably at comparable framerates.

I've made a side-project of enhancing FS9 as much as possible using only freeware. With WOAI traffic, replacement textures and skies, and freeware airports combined with the ENBSeries shader, the FS9 rig is starting to look better than the payware enhanced FSX. I totally get why a lot of old timers want to stick with it.

FS2004 ALL The way, I actually have FSX Installed on my PC and FS9 As well, I play FS9 Much more then i do FSX, Theres just so many addons still out there to play around with that will make FS9 Look much better then FSX, FSX looks Horrible with all the sliders to the left. Don't get me wrong though if your PC Can handle it you can get FSX to look amazing but its going to cost you.

Besides id rather run a simulation that i can actually enjoy, has tons of beautiful ad-dons and runs super smooth then deal with FSX Headaches,

Does a plain FSX installation (+SP1-2 or acceleration) with most sliders to the left (if not all) still look better than FS9 with sliders fully right with tons of ground scenery addons?

No way.

Visually of course with addons installed in both, FSX has better eye candy. But most who stick with FS9 do so for performance reasons. It might not look 100% as good as FSX, but the performance gains makes it well worth the slight sacrifice in visuals. You can still make look FS9 look very good.

When I get home I might try the FSX screenshot thing you mentioned. I assume it would just look really flat (no autogen) with mushy textures.

Hello

My take

Does a plain FSX installation (+SP1-2 or acceleration) with most sliders to the left (if not all) still look better than FS9 with sliders fully right with tons of ground scenery addons?

My take on this is:

If you need to consider running FSX with all sliders to the left because your hardware struggles with anything higher, then run FS9 instead, you will be much happier.

However if you have a modern middle of the road PC, i5 2500 for example then FSX will be by far the better choice.

Both platforms are not great straight out of the box, but FSX with the latest addons is light years ahead of FS9.

The addons available now are really making FSX shine.

Hello guys, thank you for your thoughts.

Disclaimer: I didn't mean bringing up that dead mustang. if I experience performance issues, will it be better by reducing the fsx sliders all the way to the left and still looks better than fs9 with enormous addons and sliders to the right? (so that I can feel an epic difference by migrating to fsx)

I know there have been many complaints on how fsx treats our C/GPU and such. I'm trying to think out of the box and wondering if we lowered our expectations (that means lower the sliders) we would get reasonable performance as we got with fs9.

Your experiment is too good to be true yet it is a known result. The thing is getting 30 FPS on fsx with humble settings can outperform fs9 with enormous add ons. 30 fps is a plain one, can you imagine how many fps you will get after all the gauges in NGX or future T7 are on?

90% is enough, well said. However, In a thread months ago, one said that 25 fps in fsx is quite different with 25 fps in fs9. Somehow, 25 fps in fsx is smoother than 25-fs9.

No way.

Well, my i5 2500k should be okay to run fsx but my GPU is an old one. I have searched down the internet and couldnt find any images depict a plain fsx with sliders to left.

Okay (I) admit it. It's all about how much investment you dare to splash. Those who stick with fs9 are either reluctant to spend more in building fsx as they have probably spent A LOT during those years (Addons and hardwares)..OR, they just dont like how fsx appears on their screens, which is VERY RARE.

My advice?...

Get BOTH Flight Sims...FS 2004 AND FSX and install BOTH on your Hard Drive...

..they are cheap enough now!

At the moment I have Flight Unlimited II, Pro Pilot '99, CFS 2, FS '98, FS 2000, FS 2002, FS 2004, FSX, (and Flight!) on my Hard Drives, all ready to play!

I can instantly do a comparison between all of them...lots of fun!

(They will all run independently)

Paul......More Flight Sims to play with, than are good for me!... ... ...!

I'm about to purchase fsx gold edition. All be interesting to compare.

Don't forget to leave FS 2004 on your Hard Drive!

(Just in case you are disappointed with FSX!)... ...!

FS 2004 and FSX can be run independently on the same Drive with no problems.

Best advice yet! Actually I think the OP already has FS9, but like Fozzer said, FSX is so cheap right now you might as well buy it and test yourself. You rig is more than capable, the only two things holding you back is the video card and you need to overclock your CPU to at least ~4.0ghz to really get the most out of FSX FPS wise. I have both sims installed on my rig and if I can find the time, I can try to post some comparisons for you of stock vs, stock.

The only real differences between the two visually are the ground textures being higher resolution in FSX and the water in FSX is different. Some like FSX water more than FS9 water and of course some like it less than FS9. Personally I like it more than FS9 water, but the biggest thing for me choosing FSX as my main sim over FS9 is the higher resolution ground textures. In FS9 even when its as sharp as it can get, it still looks a bit blurry to me, where as in FSX you can get ground resolutions down to 6cm for photo scenery. I run mine at 60cm which is plenty sharp for me. You can also run higher res cloud textures in FSX, but I prefer the normal size which is 1024.

Theres just so many addons still out there to play around with that will make FS9 Look much better then FSX.

Example please. I've read that before, not from you specifically, but have yet to see any addon that can make FS9 look better than FSX. If that were the case, there would probably be a massive shift of FSX users going back to FS9 to pick up extra performance.

When devs release a/c or sceneries that are for both platforms, different downloads of course, I have yet to see the FS9 version look better or have more features than the FSX version. In most cases the FS9 version seems to always be cut down because they couldn't get the said feature, resolution, or whatever to work in FS9.

You find me a way to make FS9 look better than FSX and I'll strip to my underwear, give myself a wedgie, eat my shoes, video tape it and put it on youtube for your enjoyment :-)
