Problems when installing new ATI drivers

Featured Replies

I have been trying to update my ATI drivers to the latest version available (version 8.970.100.3000) for my card HD4870 and followed this procedure:

(1) deleted the old driver from the device manager

(2) uninstalled all ATI software including the Catalyst with the ATI tool and Driver Cleaner,

(3) rebooted,

(4) installed the new Catalyst package with the driver,

(5) rebooted and... was greeted by a black screen.

Reboot in safe mode, all items are there as they should: driver is in place and is the correct new version, CCC is also installed but can't be opened: "Impossible to load "CLI. Implementation" or one of its associated files. Cannot be found".

When I want to uninstall the driver using the ATI uninstall tool, I get another error message: "Detection Manager failed to load the driver"...

I don't know where to look next. I sent a message to ATI requesting help four days ago, no reply. Has anyone had this problem before and resolved it successfully? Any assistance would be most welcome!

Hi Jean-Claude,

Try removing drivers, then run the driver cleaner. If you can, boot into safe mode and remove drivers or run cleaner further (some drivers active cannot be removed unles in safe mode). Then reboot and cancel any attempt for the system to install video drivers on its own. You'll boot into an ugly VGA screen resolution temporarily until you run the AMD driver install.

Just went through this with the latest beta from AMD for my Gigabyte 7950. (BTW...have not updated my signature yet with latest hardware so disregard what you see below)

Hope this helps.....Chris

Why do you guys make life so difficult for yourselves? You just need to let the installer do it's job. All this uninstalling and cleaning is totally unnecessary. New drivers are installed automatically. Betas? What do you think they're going to do for you? Wait for releases.

It's OK, I'm alright now.

Thanks Chris, my problem is far more vicious than this! No amount of cleaning would do, I even tried the Net framework uninstall and reinstall suggested on a specialised forum to no avail. I used Driver Fusion to eliminate to the last bit of ATI trace on my HD, but anytime I install CCC, I always get back to my black screen upon rebooting, meaning that I have to reboot in Safe mode and roll back to my saved situation to get my screen back. So in short, I am totally unable to install ANY driver not to mention CCC. ATI/AMD forum is a waste of time, they don't bother to reply to messages or support queries (one full week!).

I am running short of ideas and envisage the dreadful prospect of a full windows reinstall along with my n... GB of FS software! Unless someone pops up with the magical formula!

Ron I wish you were right, if it worked for you as you suggested, then consider yourself as a - very - lucky guy!

For what it's worth, I've never uninstalled a video driver. For example, what happens if the new driver turns my FSX screen to plaid and I need to roll back the driver? If I'd uninstalled and cleaned everything I might have some problems, even if everything else worked.

I've also hit a couple of instances where the newest driver that came with my computer caused display problems in some games. I had to go find an older driver to install to make the games work.

The tech support mantra of "update your video drivers"? Forget it. I was a helper on GameSpy for 8 months and in that time I told TWO people to update their video drivers, as the version they had caused known problems, which they were experiencing. Another guy asked if he should update and I told him he could but it wouldn't solve his current problem.

The moral of this story: don't be in a hurry to update. And make sure you can roll back without a lot of effort.

Okay, I had this problem some time ago. The ONLY way I was able to resolve it was to clean all traces of ATI, boot into the Safe Mode, and install from the disk that originally came with my ATI card. Then upgrade to the latest CCC/Drivers via the installer. Nothing else (I tried everything) worked.

Hope this helps.

I'm wondering what else has been uninstalled during all this cleaning! Hook, a very valid point you make about rolling back a driver. Having said that, I always have the latest release drivers and they've always been installed over the top of the old ones. If I'm a -very-lucky guy that would put me in a minority, but I doubt that. Anyway, good luck with it. Reinstall Windows would be my advice. Bite the bullet. In fact, it's not really that scarey once you've made the decision. :shok:

Try this method.

1. Uninstall the ATI driver and ccc software from ...'programs and features' in control panel.

2. Have a quick check in device manager and select 'show all devices' or 'show hidden devices' ( view tab, I think )

This is just to check that there are no multiple listings for your card, if so you must remove them all. (uninstall or disable )

3. reboot, windows will detect new hardware and prompt for drivers, decline this.

If in 2. you found multiple devices, recheck Device manager.

4. run the new driver setup.

Ron.

Maybe an obvious question, but one I would still like to ask; which driver were you trying to install (the version number you posted doesn't mean all that much to me, I tend to use the easier revision numbers like 12.4 or 12.10)? Since the HD4870 has been deemed legacy I believe, so the latest driver is 12.6. Were you trying to install 12.10? Also, for AMD drivers, you can just install the latest one over the previous one, saves you a lot of trouble and headache. No reboots, no cleaning necessary, it just updates what needs updating and you're done. Once it's up and running, and stable, you can delete the setup files from the older version to free up some space if required.

Many thanks for all the suggestions!

For your information I am trying to install CCC 12.6 on Windows XP SP3. I will work on this tomorrow morning and will report on the results. So far I was able to reinstall the driver of 12-6 and it works well, however CCC wont work because it "requires Net Framework vers. 2.0" and I installed version 4.0... So my headache moved from one problem to another, but at least I can now reboot in normal mode. When starting FS9 though, I also get a message that my graphic card is not detected, when I go to Hardware display, there is no card listed and I cannot change any settings at all.

My plan is to once more uninstall NET Framework and CCC, reinstall NF and CCC in this order, hoping to unlock this situation.

Thanks again for all your feedback most welcome!

I have to agree with Ron, I always just let the new drivers update automatially. I guess I am another one of those lucky ones.

I could eliminate my problems finally after deleting in the Windows Assembly file all the 90ba9c70f846762e keys related to ATI/AMD that were causing the CCC to crash, my CCC (vers. 12.6) works fully and so do my two displays with the new latest driver for my HD4870, but I am now stuck with the most important part: When starting FS9, I get this message:

"Your computer cannot currently use 3D hardware acceleration. Software 3D mode has been enabled. Some graphical features may not appear in software mode."

In my FS9 display hardware settings page the ATI card is not recognised and I cannot select anything. I verified the FS9 cfg and my card is there as it should. When checking with dxdiag, I can see that my 3D acceleration cannot be selected, it is grayed out. Has anyone experienced and resolved this?

Sir,

Did you try my suggestion? Here is a little more detail just in case:

Uninstlal ATI CCC/drivers. Reboot. Driver Sweeper to clear all traces of ATI software. Reboot. Registry Clean. Reboot. Then re-install using OEM software disk. Reboot. Upgrade to the latest CCC/drivers.

OEM software is often a LITTLE different than ATI's. Mine (Diamond) states so in the installation instructions.

I had your same problem, but unfortunately the only solution for me was to format my Hd and since then I never update my video drivers.

...And cleaners have proven to be useless when trying to remove Ati drivers, at least for me.

Thank you Dave, unfortunately, I can't try your suggestion for only one reason: I do not have with me the OEM software disk as I am 4000 km away from home where all my disks are... I have done all what you suggest except that major part and I can't resolve that issue!
