Good point. I own a 2007 Cadillac Srx and would never consider buying the newer model-the newer one is just missing too many features my older model has!

Do you not understand the point which is you are not going to trade in a car or a flight sim for something less than you already have. It doesnt matter if the other simulator or car is newer. You are comparing it against what you own, highly modded with a larger investment.

Why would you give up something that is better for something that is only newer? It has to offer more than being just newer and in the future it probably will.

You seem to be more interested in scoring 'points' than participating in the conversation.

I've had a Windows PC for most of my life. Spent a small fortune on constant upgrades. Graphics cards being the most expensive.

Very soon, I'm getting a new iMac. All my Windows PC hardware will either be sold or thrown away.

If you know of a way to integrate all my Windows PC hardware into my new iMac, please, let me know.

I just got a new iMac. I have only tried Xplane and aerosoft-but as a flight simming platform it runs much slower with half the options selected that my 4 year old pc does. I'd love to get rid of the pc because I like the iMac much better in all other respects-but for flight simming I sure would not get rid of the pc soon. There is a built in migration program in the iMac so no worry there.

Goran, there is a conversation going on here and you are debating if an analogy is good or not.

Forget the analogy as I am sure you understand what I am saying.

If you dont not understand that these guys will not move until the entire xpx experience can give them what the sum total of their existing FSX experience can then there is not a lot more to be said.

I dont bother to run any games on my macs, just too slow compared to my PC, primarily because of the build in GPU's in the macs. I imagine team fortress 2 would go OK on my 27" imac though. I love macs to death, currently 3 macbook pros, imac, mac mini and a couple mac pro's that I sold. Excellent for everything except the games i play :)

No, I'm discussing. Trying to get clarification. Not debating. There's a difference.

Of course I understand what you're saying. I just don't agree with it.

If you always misinterpret what I say as hostile or argumentative, there's not much I can do about that.

With that, have a fantastic new year!

Goran, what is your point in going off the topic if you understand what I am saying.

OK, so you dont agree with it so why discuss an analogy and not the topic? What is the point in that?

I understand your point Jason, XPX does not offer what a fully customized Fsx can, seems simple to me. Thus the reason for peoples reluctance to switch over, why leave more, for less.

Qutoe from Airfighter: "ORBX textures against XP defaults. What an argument! Has ORBX released the whole planet? I don't think so! If they do can someone give me an estimation of Terabytes of HDD will be required?"

Funny that you should mention that, Airfighter, as ORBX has just announced FTX World. This will be a replacement of default FSX textures in areas of the world whichs haven't yet gotten the special ORBX treatment. This will include all of the rest of the world. John Venema and team now feel that they have created enough textures to do justice to most of the world, although they admit they won't be perfect, but cetainly, in most cases, better than default.

How much will it cost? About $195 Aus. Sounds pretty expensive unless you stop and think of the area covered, and John also cautions to think of this product as a subscription, rather than a single scenery product. Your purchase will entitle you to a continual upgrade process, including reworked default airports as they become available. It will in no way detracft from their other FTX scenery projects, as a separate team has been hired to work on this. I believe he said the addon will be available in the first half of 2013.

There are some awesome looking screenshots on the ORBX forum, including one of France, MDMax, but you will have to sign up for a forum membership if you want to see them.

Also, you will not need ORBX's switching tool to fly in these areas. And, Airfighter, we're not talking about Terabytes of hard disk space here, but a mere 5 Gigs or so. Remember, these are land class tile replacements.

I, for one intend to jump on this one!

Happy New Year, All!

I can understand the frustration that someone who spend a couple of thousands of dollars in FSX, when this investment is now on dead platform. But defending that, it is obvious that you are far away from truth.

Let me put this way. NEX GEN sim is X-Plane 10. HDR lightning, 64-bit. Fullstop. And I don't count anything that cannot fly across the pond, like DCS. Oranges and apples, you know.

And XP10 is here and will be for many years. From XP9 release to XP10 release, had passed 4 years. Looking at the huge leap Laminar did with XP10, i don't thing XP11 before 2017/2018. May be that year what on a fast pace of development. But when the 10.20 come out of beta, do not wait to see the same rhythm of updates. May be on that some major players (PMDG?) are counting to start releasing their products.

And, Airfighter, we're not talking about Terabytes of hard disk space here, but a mere 5 Gigs or so. Remember, these are land class tile replacements.

Ah, I see, just some better textures only to cover generally the whole world. And for $195AUs (or $202 US) just for that. Wow!

Airfighter, maybe not everyone is thinking the same way as you?

Personally, I would be hesitant at this point in time to spend $1500 on FSX without seeing a better roadmap as to where my investment may go. We are not talking about new people spending new money.

Why if you have already spent that money over the years walk away from it just because something else is newer? That doesnt make a lot of sense. The day will come when xplane or an alternative will be more attractive. When that day comes I suspect people will start to walk away from their investment. Until then when their older model with upgrades works better for them than the new model that is where they will stay and there is not a lot of logic to say that this is silly.

I spend most of my flying time in DCS, you cant fly across the pond but thats not important to me in that sim. You see different people like different things.

Airfighter, if you are replying to my statement regarding the release of ORBX FTX World, as a defense of FSX, you are misinterpreting my intentions. I merely used your words as a springboard to announce an amazing new product for FSX, although admittedly we're both a little off topic.

Neither FSX nor X-Plane need defending. People will go to whatever sim meets their needs. I use both, and I am increasingly enjoying X-Plane, but FSX is not dead yet, due to extensive 3rd party support, and I will continue to use it as well as X-Plane. Perhaps you are right that X-Plane is the future; in fact, I hope you are. But that remains to be seen; it largely depends on the success of the Laminar team and 3rd party developers, and certainly us users to support those efforts!

Best regards to you,

Tom

Interesting you would see this as a negative.

WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE-the best Flight Sim!

Any flight sim that is going to replace my FSX "dead platform" is going to have to give me certain features. The whole world with radio navaids, attractive autogen, and custom points of interest like landmarks or major cities, time of day, seasons of the year, and real world weather. It's going to have to give me a variety of planes, well modeled with good flight characteristics, with some good systems depth but the ability to just jump in and fly if I prefer.

There are a lot of features not in the above list that many people can't live without. I'm not bothered by a lack of ATC or AI planes, for example.

A typical flight for me is to start from an airport a few miles from my house, jump in my amphibian and fly a couple hundred miles using VOR or NDB navigation to land on a small lake to visit my brother in law who is staying in a cabin there. All this with the correct season, weather and time of day.

Since I can already do this in FSX, any potential replacement will have to raise the bar considerably in most areas. How close can XPlane come to my list of requirements?

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;

There is some irony that addons are considered expensive when XPX is currently the most expensive consumer sim. Also that xpx payware scenery seemed to be more expensive than FSX scenery.
