December 30, 201213 yr I think the next version will feature 'click here to enable the mouse pointer' or something. ^_^ The OP has a point. With the consoles, the main hurdle is to find a power outlet. And a cold beer. :lol:
December 30, 201213 yr Its actually even worse. In the forum now we have several popular threads, including "Orbx world is here!" this current "Add-on Rant" thread, an "FSX default terrain vs Downloads thread" and also an "Orbx England has arrived!" post. All of them (to me) are circling around the exact same subject from different directions, and that subject is pretty much the increasing lengths we are going to, to make an ancient Flight Simulator called FSX last a little longer and look a bit less like poo while doing so. Meanwhile, I was just soaring over a rendition of England (and several other places) that was so amazingly high resolution and detailed and fast and dynamic (and fluid) as to make all of those FSX additions look just exactly like what they are; a new coat of paint over a hard working but increasingly aged car that really (really) needs to be replaced asap. FSX has done yeoman service, and more than anyone could ever have reasonably expected of it, but its getting increasingly obvious that its time to move on. Soon. We are all connected..... December 30, 201213 yr Never ever install your FSX stuff in C:\Program Files (x86) on a windows 7 and above computer........ Never ever install your FSX stuff in C:\Program Files (x86) on a PC running windows Vista, 7, or 8 Are you both serious? If so, why not install to that folder? I have previously used that folder without apparent problems (albeit without a huge number of add-ons).I've just recently decided to try Acceleration (after years of using SP1 & SP2 instead), and have begun acquiring a number of add-ons, but I haven't yet installed everything. Should I reinstall to a different folder to avoid future problems? Vic
December 30, 201213 yr I have FSX installed on C:\Program Files (x86) on a windows 7 and above computer. and I am having no problems whatsoever. It runs like a dream. Lose not thine airspeed, lest the ground rise up and smite thee.
December 30, 201213 yr FSX has done yeoman service, and more than anyone could ever have reasonably expected of it, but its getting increasingly obvious that its time to move on. Devon, your whole post was odd. You sound for all the world like you're trying to convince yourself to leave FSX and having trouble doing it. A year ago I got tired of FSX crashing every third flight and looked around for a replacement. P3D seemed to have just as many crash problems according to the forums. Aerofly only covered Switzerland and had limited autogen according to forum posts... which are probably wrong; I've seen plenty of autogen in videos and screen shots. XPlane... well, you remember what it was like a year ago. I didn't consider combat sims. Microsoft Flight came out about that time, but it only had Hawaii... but it WAS Microsoft, so I gave it a try. Many things were improved, many things were missing, but there was a lot of promise. Alaska wasn't a major step up from default FSX from what I could see, although Hawaii definitely was. Then Flight died on the vine and that ended that. I'll fly the A2A Cub in default Alaska before I'll fly the Super Cub in Flight's Alaska. I prefer the terrain variation (and the much more colorful and varied autogen) in FSX, but real world weather is what makes the real decision. I have no replacement scenery whatsoever. The only airport edits I've done were to upgrade my home field, and to fix the elevation on an airport I landed at in South America so it wasn't 1000 feet below the rest of the surface. Personally, I LIKE the default textures, and the default autogen with both sliders at max is much superior to Flight's. Some of the FSX meshes are really bad, and everyone knows what cliff faces look like in FSX. For some reason, FSX stopped crashing last month, so I'm no longer looking for a replacement. I'm also not looking for a lot of enhancements, as I like default FSX, and I don't want to take a chance on the crashes coming back. But then, I never felt like I needed them. If you want to drop FSX, you don't need a reason. Just do it. Give yourself permission. You'll be happier in the long run. I suspect people who still use FS9 exclusively are pretty amused by your post. Hook Larry Hookins Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of EarthAnd danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;

(Plus dozens and dozens more from other venders) To go with that, I also have DCS, Aerofly, FS9, ROF, Wings of Prey, Microsoft Flight, X-Plane10 (Beta), Comanche 4, Strike Fighters, Lock On Modern Air Combat, War Thunder etc. The fact is with today's cheap prices and high capacities for storage I have only once seen the need to delete simulations (except for the inevitable FSX repair re-installations) either for practical reasons or as a statement; so I am not sure why I would now be abruptly trying to convince myself to permanently delete something. December 30, 201213 yr Never ever install your FSX stuff in C:\Program Files (x86) on a windows 7 and above computer........ Make sure your useraccount is admin. Disable all virus/security stuff before installing, and before flying. Install FSX in C:\FSX, disable UAC, run all SW as Admin. Give all related dir's full r/w acces. I'm also running AS2012, SB4, EFB networked from a laptop. I have GEX/UTX plus others. See my sig. Never had a CTD or other mishaps in over a year. Regards Morten
December 30, 201213 yr I never have CTD's either. In fact its been years since I have seen one. (Related to FSX at least!) But then, I don't install FSX on the C: drive (I only needed one experience with manually changing permissions to kill that habit) I don't turn off my antivirus and I never disable UAC. (There are only two vendors who habitually flip off my antivirus, and I reluctantly stopped purchasing from them) All in all, the different experiences just prove FSX is a quirky beast. December 30, 201213 yr Author Hi all, Thank you for your replies. My user is an admin. My FSX is located in "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X". I run FSX as admin with XP SP3 compatability. When i first installed FSX last week i was having a lot of problems with DLLs so after Googleing I decided to chuck every fix at it! I also run my FS2Crew and REX add-ons as admin. Would you recommend uninstalling everything and starting again?
December 30, 201213 yr I am not sure why I would now be abruptly trying to convince myself to permanently delete something. I didn't say delete it. I said leave it, or drop it. In other words, quit using it and forget about it. I still have Flight installed, for example, although I don't fly it. its getting increasingly obvious that its time to move on. Who did you want to move on? Me? All those people still flying FS9? No, it sounds like you're trying to convince yourself to move on. There's nothing wrong with that, and if you don't realize that's what is happening, you're bound to be a little confused. the increasing lengths we are going to, to make an ancient Flight Simulator called FSX last a little longer and look a bit less like poo while doing so. I don't know about anyone else, but I'm still flying mostly default aircraft over completely default scenery. There's nothing to be made to "last longer." Some of the new scenery, the new aircraft, the wonderful weather depictions we have now, all sorts of other add-ons, all these elevate FSX far beyond what came in the box in 2006. FSX is the operation system to the add-on applications. There's no reason to "move on" to a new operating system just because one might be available. When there is a clear choice that another system is superior enough in enough ways, people will "move on" naturally. Flight's superior eye candy (in most areas) and superior flight models was not enough to overcome its limitations. The same goes for every other flight sim to some extent or another. If you've found something that serves your purposes better, great. It won't serve mine, or a lot of other people's. We're staying with FSX, thank-you-very-much-please. Also, I wouldn't trade my wife in on a newer model just because she's got some grey hairs; guys who do this often find out the eye candy isn't worth it. And now, I'm off to try to decide if I want to buy this expensive add-on aircraft which will probably lower my frame rates into the teens at best, isn't really the style of flying I like to do, and will probably crash my system frequently and use up way too much remaining SSD space on my C: drive with the uninstall files... but is of a quality that will not be available outside FSX in the foreseeable future. Not in some vain attempt to make FSX last just a little longer, but because I want the experience of flying this thing. Hook Larry Hookins Oh! December 30, 201213 yr I didn't say delete it. I said leave it, or drop it. In other words, quit using it and forget about it. I still have Flight installed, for example, although I don't fly it. I still have FSX installed and I do occasionally fly it, though mostly for comparison purposes, since memory can be fallible. Its your decision not to use flight, but I have not made that decision about FSX. I am glad you have found closure. Who did you want to move on? Me? All those people still flying FS9? No, it sounds like you're trying to convince yourself to move on. There's nothing wrong with that, and if you don't realize that's what is happening, you're bound to be a little confused. I have a viewpoint on the current state of affairs about FSX and I am going to share it. Judging by the amount of threads asking about the successor to that sim, or holding up this sim or that sim as the successor, or even discussing desired options in a successor, its pretty clear there is interest, even if you personally may be satisfied for now I don't know about anyone else, but I'm still flying mostly default aircraft over completely default scenery. There's nothing to be made to "last longer." You realize others can and will disagree? Some of the new scenery, the new aircraft, the wonderful weather depictions we have now, all sorts of other add-ons, all these elevate FSX far beyond what came in the box in 2006. FSX is the operation system to the add-on applications. There's no reason to "move on" to a new operating system just because one might be available. When there is a clear choice that another system is superior enough in enough ways, people will "move on" naturally. There may be no reason for you to move on but others reserve the right to differ. Some might in fact choose to help guide that choice more actively, either through discussions of crowd source funding (as unlikely as that is) or in simply hashing out beforehand some of the challenges and opportunities made possible through the use of advancing technology. Or... one could simply wait for it all to happen and drop on ones lap. Flight's superior eye candy (in most areas) and superior flight models was not enough to overcome its limitations. The same goes for every other flight sim to some extent or another. If you've found something that serves your purposes better, great. It won't serve mine, or a lot of other people's. Also, I wouldn't trade my wife in on a newer model just because she's got some grey hairs; guys who do this often find out the eye candy isn't worth it. I wish you every happiness. Others do however feel its time to move on, and also have every right to do so and to think about it and discuss it to their hearts content thank-you-very-much-please. Further, I personally do not feel myself to be married to FSX in any way shape or form. Best of luck. In the meantime I and others will continue to explore other options and freely voice our opinions regarding those options. We are all connected..... To each other, biologically......
