Devon, you're a smart guy, and have made some excellent posts, and a number of your reputation points have come from me.

I was looking hard for a successor to FSX a year ago. I didn't find one. Thought Flight was gonna be it, but it didn't turn out that way. After 400+ flight hours in Flight, I returned to FSX and discovered that it wasn't so bad. I made several flights in Flight and FSX on the same route in similar aircraft and discovered there were things I much preferred in FSX.

Yes, FSX is showing its age, and has some warts that can't be fixed. Other flight sims do some of what FSX does a lot better. But from what I've seen, none does everything FSX does, and the ones that come close don't give me a compelling reason to switch.

If you've decided you don't care for FSX, there's no problem with that. But there's no reason to bash FSX. "... it's time to move on."

Again, who are you trying to convince to move on? And why? If you really like XYZ program, praise it to the skies. Encourage people to try it. I'm always interested in hearing other people's opinions of other products. But if you start bashing FSX, expect responses like mine. Go tell the FS9 people they need to move on and see what kind of reception you get.

Who are you trying to convince to move on? And why? These are not rhetorical questions. You won't convince the FS9 people, you won't convince the FSX people for the same reasons, so the only thing left is that you're trying to convince yourself. And there's nothing wrong with that, either. I'm certainly not trying to convince you to stay with FSX.

I sincerely wish you the best of luck with your new flight sim, whatever it may be.

Oh, and Happy New Year. :)

I run FSX as admin with XP SP3 compatability.

Why are you doing this? FSX was developed for Vista and now Windows 7. XP just happened to be the OS when it was first released but Vista arrived shortly thereafter and Windows 7 is the same as Vista except it has better memory management, fixed a lot of Vista bugs, and is more stable than any previous OS.

Best regards,

Jim

IMHO, this is a matter of opinion / personal preference and not a hard and fast rule. I have never had any problem with FSX-Accel installed in the default location in WIN7-64. Never.

The very first thing I did after installing WIN7 was to completely disable UAC. After installing FSX I set it to run as Admin, and I do the same with all add-on installers (scenery, a/c, etc). Heavy add-ons like REX and AS2012 also run as Admin. It's been smooth sailing all the way.

Most people don't know how to do that, so it is good advice for most users, many who will even struggle to create a custom folder...

Simmerhead - Making the virtual skies unsafe since 1987!

Hi all,

Thank you for your replies. My user is an admin. My FSX is located in "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X". I run FSX as admin with XP SP3 compatability. When i first installed FSX last week i was having a lot of problems with DLLs so after Googleing I decided to chuck every fix at it!

I also run my FS2Crew and REX add-ons as admin.

Would you recommend uninstalling everything and starting again?

If it's working ok, leave it alone, you are fine.

Jay

Are you both serious? If so, why not install to that folder? I have previously used that folder without apparent problems (albeit without a huge number of add-ons).

I've just recently decided to try Acceleration (after years of using SP1 & SP2 instead), and have begun acquiring a number of add-ons, but I haven't yet installed everything.

Should I reinstall to a different folder to avoid future problems?

I am serious. Windows treats the "Program Files" directories differently, particularly with regard to file redirection. Windows moves some directories and then tightly controls what can write to those directories in the name of security. So if a program is installed there and needs to write out a config file, for example, Windows may interfere and prevent that from happening, causing trouble in SimLand. Some of it can be disabled by turning off UAC--and some of it cannot. Problems can arise with add-ons or even non-FS programs that work with supporting files in a directory that Windows has decided to do redirection on.

Should you reinstall? That depends, but if you're not having problems, then probably not now. The next time you rebuild Rome, though, I would put it into a different directory. And it may become necessary if you have problems later. Plus, things are a whole lot easier to work with when the path to FS is D:\FSX than the default C:\Programs Files (x86)\Microsoft\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator X...

All those who like to use PC's to Fly Planes have moved to P3D Academic @ 45$

While all those who like to crash PC's as they try to fly planes are still using FSX.

P3D is stil not as stable as "A NORMAL APP" but far more stable than FSX. Plus P3D is supported by LM, FSX you on your own.

Where do people come up with this stuff? I have TONS of addon, FSX installed to default, UAC off, been flying FSX since just after it was released, on the third computer upgrade with it, never had a CTD, no stutters, flys smooth as silk, and looks great.

Really, if you are having FSX issues, it's YOUR problem, not FSX's, look within.

I know what you mean, FSX was quite stable for a while as well. But Statistically acrros all users FSX crash reputation is RED ALERT status.

Seriously if you fsx is stable its not worth going P3D its the same sim. If you gona reinstall cause fsx crashed in 2012, its no brianer, get P3D, so you ready for P3D 2.0 when oit comes.

I can definatly tell you that fsx crash or not is not down to pc maintainance skills, its a big fat luck, but maintaince helps, if you FSX stable for so long you gota be doing something right, and lukcy.

Nobody has CTDs with FSX. They can fly for years without them. Then, one day, for no apparent reason they start, and nothing you do will get rid of them. No one seems to know why.

Occasionally, someone has a CTD that actually has a good reason, and there's a solution for it. More often the person says, "That worked, thanks!" then two days later they're back, "I'm getting the same problem again."

If you don't have CTDs, you're lucky. Hope it stays that way.

The scenery and weather add-ons is definitely a case of too many cooks spoil the broth. If i was to only buy and run one add-on, REX, FEX, OpusFSX

or AS2012 for both weather and textures which one would it be?

The reason i ask is that a lot of poeple say Rex for textures and ASE for weather but what is the point in paying for something if you only use half of it ?

So far, I have installed FSX in the default location every time I installed it, on 2 PC's and my laptop, default location every time.

Every time I have done this, my Antivirus has been enabled. Sometimes the UAC has also been enabled too, and every time, I have had no issues with it.

So to all you guys who keep bashing on and on and on about "Disable AV, NEVER install in default location, I say "Pffffffffttttttt" "Baloney"

It seems nobody has caught what the OP has said, in that he has installed FSX SP1 then SP2, and NOW has installed acceleration.

So, to the OP{ I say, based on the last 5 months of messing about with this repeatedly, on several computers...

Go ahead, install it in the default location, no problem, but either install SP1 & SP2 OR Acceleration, but not both.

If you have SP2 installed already, you MIGHT want to un-install it before doing acceleration or just re-install the entire FSX if you dont have any add-ons just yet.

If your user account on your PC has permission to install software, then your already an admin, so no need for the "Run as admin" stuff.

I'm certainly no FSX expert, not by a long shot, but I have installed FSX on 3 computers, at least 5 times on each, trying different methods, looking for that sweet spot or magic method if you like, and every time I ended up with the same results, but have only every had 1 crash to desktop and that was due to myself limiting the buffer pools then setting the LOD to 10.0 lol, that was asking for trouble..

So, install in default location, don't worry, you can turn of the user account control if you like, but it wont make any difference if you don't, just accept everything your installs want to do. I switch mine off purely because its a pain in the &@($* when your re-installing tons of stuff, to keep being bothered by that nagging, and then just go for it. Install your add-ons.

I've found some of my add-ons to have caused more problems than FSX itself.

Oh, and do fill in your profile with your PC, FSX and stuff, so we know what your referring to and can help more :-)

Weather add-ons, I'd say check em-out first before you buy, read reviews, checkout youtube for tutorials etc. Shortly after I got AS2012, I saw alot of people raving about how good Opus is, and kinda kicked myself for not being a bit more patient... Seems Opus gets great feedback, but I'm pleased with AS2012 so far..

Regarding FS2Crew, if your using the Voice pack, then you need to train your PC to recognise your voice....

For the scenery, you havent told any of us what settings your using in your FSX, so nobody can answer that just yet.

I have the NGX, FS2Crew, AS2012, GEX, UTX, Aivlasoft EFB Networked and all is working just fine so far, until ORBX ENG screwed up my FSX...

About to start re-install #6 on my main rig tonight.

Hi,

I have had a few successful flights today which is good. i did not use the REX engine though.

I have ultra-high settings on all the settings, get around 20fps. Opus is way too expensive for just a weather add-on. I might as well combine textures and weather into one app.

I'm certainly no FSX expert, not by a long shot, but I have installed FSX on 3 computers, at least 5 times on each...

Well, that much is evident from your "poo-pooing" of many folks who are in fact "FS experts..." You represent at most a sample of 15, and most certainly cannot conclude from such a small sample to predict your "good experience" to encompass the universe of FS users, and plethora of hardware and operating system combinations.

Over the past twenty odd years I have helped literally hundreds of folks with FS problems, many of which have been solved by simply following the advice given to not use the "default folder" for FS. This has been especially true since the advent of Vista and has continued through into Win8.

The odds of having access problems only increase as one adds more and more advanced aircraft to their collection.

I agree here with Bill. I think the single most valuable thing to avoid CTDs is to install FSX anywhere but the default folder. I also think that FSX, and Fs9 before, are amazingly stable considering how far each is pushed with not only currently available addons but all sorts of quite bizarre tweaks applied, many of which are further pushing the core software to within an inch of its life.

I've run FSX on Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 over many years and the tiny number of CDTs I've had were almost always traced not to FSX itself, or any windows o/s, but to graphics drivers or tweaks which might work in some ways but in others create a risk of crashing where none occured before.

Our own customer stats demonstrate that almost all reports about CDTs are eventually traced to some exotic tweak (often in FSX.cfg) that the user either forgot to mention or didn't at first declare, or running FSX with huge amounts of scenery detail, multiple addons all running at once, vast weather layers, huge amounts of traffic, etc etc which are cumulatively pushing their system to well beyond what it could be expected to cope with.

After many many years I've only experienced one product that produces unsolvable CTDs. Perhaps I've been lucky.
