Interesting Investigative Documentary

Featured Replies

For anyone with 30 mins to spare, I've come across an interesting investigative documentary about the fear culture and fuel policy in Ryanair that lead up to the 3 consecutive Mayday calls back in the summer of this year.

In Dutch with English subtitles.

Thanks for the link. Those pilots have done an honorable thing by coming forward to tell about their own experiences, good for them for standing up to make things right.

The bean counters are the ones running companies now and all they see are numbers. Safety should be the priority but I know from experience that it is part of the numbers game and the numbers are manipulated all the time, it's what managers do to get their bonuses and for the corporations to report savings and profits to their share holders.

Looking forward to the next chapter of the report on Thursday this week.

It's my life experience now; if the numbers look right, few seem to care what's really happening....

And there are so many who stand to benefit by pretending, at least until reality catches up to them, to believe those numbers, aren't there?

We are all connected..... To each other, biologically...... To the Earth, chemically...... To the rest of the Universe atomically.

Them cheap tickets. Two sides involved. The one creates them, the other one buys them.

Not to mention that the system is flawed when safety concerns have to be voiced anonymously. But, perhaps somehow defending the low fuel policy, my guess would be that Ryanair is just one player. A well known one of course. Doesn't make it better though.

Its not just airlines. Look at some of the poor quality items made in a certain country that has little regard for labor. Quality and service are for the most part lip service these days.

Interesting.. Thanks for the video

And they will remain to be as long as people always buy the cheapest option, instead of being willing to spend extra on quality and service.

Amen to that. Sadly, at least in the u.S., we are getting fewer and fewer choices.

I think the phrase, "If you think safety costs a lot of money, just wait till you have an accident" - should be taught to some of those bean counters in FR.

The "bean counters", as you call them ,simply come up with numbers. They don't force the CEO or Board of Directors to make the decision. Put the blame where it belongs, not on someone that is instructed to find the numbers.

Bottom line is that they all have to answer to the stockholders.

I agree Paul. It appears that if you are fired as CEO, it can be quite profitable. The cost analyst just draw unemployment. And the world continues to turn......

Balancing safety and economics is always going to be a challenge. I'm sure there are plenty more reputable airlines pushing the limits in one way or the other. I talked not long ago to a chief mechanic that returned to the Air Force after a year with a large national carrier. Their maint. routines kept him awake at night.

Simmerhead - Making the virtual skies unsafe since 1987!

Let's face it, it costs money to haul a bunch of extra gas around, hurts the environment, etc. Money and carbon that's spent hauling gas could be spent on productive uses. The problem is determining the right amount of gas to bring. That's why dispatchers and PICs get the big bucks  And we all know chief pilots are idiots who get the job because they don't have stick/rudder skills and enjoy harassing people.
