Curious about the EFB (Electronic Flight Bag)

@Kyle - would love to know where you're getting all that chart data for such a neat price! Europe version available? :D

Richard - I use ForeFlight. Unfortunately their coverage area is only the United States and Canada (additional cost), but I imagine that they might try to tackle the EU at some point. Their main market seems to be the general aviation and business crowd, and I'm sure some of those in trans-Atlantic business operations would like to have it all in one app. Jeppesen has its own product, but the version covering (part of) the EU is over $1000. I'd imagine that the costs are directly related to procuring all of the documents. Here in the United States, the charts are essentially free, and I'm just paying to have them updated several times a year simply by pressing a button, instead of wasting hours doing it manually.

Quoted from topic: Curious about the EFB (Electronic Flight Bag)

Charts for all European airports with navaids, and some VFR, are available free of charge here:

http://www.eurocontrol.int/ead/access

Go to EAD Basic. Register. The interface is a bit clunky but once registered you will be able to login. Go to 'Enter Applications'. Data download can be slow. Find 'PAMS Light [AIP]' and double-click. You must allow pop-ups for this webpage. Chose the country you want under Authority. Chose 'Charts' under 'AIP type' menu drop down.

Yes, it is clunky, but every European country is covered and it is free. The charts are high quality, up to date real world (pdf) and can be printed and downloaded.

The EFB should be wired and integrated with Sim Plates X. That could help PMDG win a great deal more customers over Captain Sim. Personally I would purchase Sim Plates X it they were going to do this. Same with QWsim 787

Forcing Sim Plates X would severely limit PMDG's ability to appeal to the mass audience, for one. Two, Sim Plates X is not a current source, and they do not strive to be. Good for the casual simmer, but not for me. I'd rather have nothing on the EFB and some printed charts offline than be forced to use a casual source.

SimPlates ULTRA provides an amazing amount of real-world aviation content at a very reasonable price. However, even though we DO include a built-in content update check that will service small, periodic updates to the program data, it is NOT the intention of this app to provide a flight-worthy, always-current, always-up-to-date service.

Thanks a lot for that! I have never heard of it before, so it's a great resource for getting EU charts.

I think that the EFB is mandatory in a 777 even if, pity, I am pretty sure it won't be in. :(

Actually its no, I know for a fact that AA doesn't have them in their 777's.

Am I the only one who doesn't care about an EFB being modeled inside the aircraft? Most of us have laptops, tablets, or a second monitor that could just as well be our "EFB". Trying to control a virtual one with a mouse makes absolutely no sense to me when I can have full physical control over my laptop, tablet, and smartphone.

Just sayin'...

Most of us "probably" do use a secondary source for charts or other pertinent information required for a successful and realistic flight. However, most of us "probably" would appreciate the use of a usable EFB in the PMDG 777 even if it is not as detailed as a real world one.

I was... just askin...

Hence the start of this thread.

I'm right there with ya William. If you look back at the past EFB posts, I'm probably in there making similar points as yourself. I do have to say, though, that some of the performance calcs would be nice to have right there on the fly (especially if the EFB is a pop-up). I think it's totally worthless for charts in the sim, however.

If I am not mistaken FSX had an online web browser in the kneeboard, [Completely useless don't even bother going to do it now], I imagine using this feature to download your Airport charts for the respectful aircraft whilst loaded in the aircraft.

If I had an EFB that is a 2d pop up I would no longer have to minimize FS just to consult a chart.

I'm suprised nobody mentioned www.airnav.com for USA charts...awesome website.

The source of the charts doesn't matter. It's making the charts move with an airplane icon indicating our position on the chart that is the difficult part. I would say that it's impossible to make (with real charts)

First of all it's not realistic at all. Terminal SID/STAR charts don't have scale.

I would buy EFB for iPad or for Windows that will be able to communicate with PMDG 777. The most important things are performance calculations and capability to transfer them to PMDG 777 FMC.

It should look like http://www.boeing.com/commercial/aeromagazine/aero_23/EFB.pdf

Too bad it does not exist!

The feature that reproduces the airport and all the taxiways with the own plane position via GPS is extremely useful.

I had to pay 10 dollars for having such a feature on a third party tool.
