January 7, 201313 yr One thing I'm missing in aircrafts is the sound of flaps. When you fly for real can you hear them. I think you should in FSX also, at least in wing view. Are there any limits in FSX that prevent this or is it something PMDG missed/didn't think about/some other reason? Mikael Johansson
January 7, 201313 yr If you're in the flight deck, you can't hear it. In the PMDG 747-400, when you move the flaps, you'll hear the flap handle, that's it. Captain Kevin Air Kevin 124 heavy, wind calm, runway 4 left, cleared for take-off. Live streams of my flights here.
January 7, 201313 yr I can hear the flap sound in wing view. I don't think a pilot in real life can hear the flaps up in the flight deck though because of the air passing by and the engines. Moses Velasquez
January 7, 201313 yr Author In flight deck I can understand that you can't hear it. But in wing view I can't hear it and that is a place I should be able to hear it. Or maybe 747 is too old . There is? at 1:07 Ahh, I can hear it. Then it maybe is old 747 "issue". Mikael Johansson
January 7, 201313 yr Commercial Member There is an option in the pmdg cfg,to raise the flap sounds in the Ngx. Look in the 800 folder. Alex Ridge Join Fswakevortex here! YOUTUBE and FACEBOOK
January 7, 201313 yr Haven't been able to find an 747 video with game audio that shows flaps movement, and I can't remember if I heard it.. Been uninstalled for some time..
January 7, 201313 yr I don't believe the PMDG B747 possesses flaps extension and retraction sounds, though I believe one can probably hear them from the cockpit—the hydraulic whine of the pressure systems is quite distinct.
January 8, 201313 yr Commercial Member You're pretty far away from it all up on the flight deck. You don't hear as much up there as you might think, looking at it from a passenger-only perspective. Heck, even the gear raising and lowering sounds vastly different in the various spots in the cabin. Kyle Rodgers
January 8, 201313 yr The only sounds you hear in a large airliner cockpit are from the engines, air conditioning, avionics cooling fans, trim/spoiler/printer/stick shaker motors, nose gear/spin brakes, switch/knob sounds, various speakers and buzzers for the warning systems, and of course wind noise.
January 9, 201313 yr I think we have to keep in mind that we did not purchase a Cabin Simulator. I am sure PMDG must balance detail with FPS. Personally I don't fly much from the wing seat. Thanks, Ron Thanks, Ron Fields

Yes, but many of us like to create films and/or watch replays from the passenger view. I personally think that having additional (realistic) sounds would be better than having a few of those unnecessary cockpit animations, such as the moving cockpit seat, manuals, etc.
January 9, 201313 yr Is it even possible to rig the simulator to play flap sounds only on wing views? As far as I'm concerned, in FS9, the wing views are merely just modified viewpoints in the cockpit view, and in FSX, if I remember correctly, it's just a camera point in external view. I'm not sure—maybe it depends on the aircraft and its visual complexity? Regardless, the flaps sounds do not have to be completely isolated from the cockpit. Perhaps a realistic dependencies curve / sound cone relating (1) the distance between the FSX camera and the flaps and (2) the resulting volume of the flaps—such that the flaps could barely be heard from the cockpit during flight—could be created. Even in real life, one can probably hear the flaps from the cockpit when the engines and/or packs are not running.
