Can't reach FL290

Featured Replies

Sounds like a problem with the weather engine if you ask me. That's my guess.

I use OpusFSX myself and at one time I had trouble with the temps causing really poor climb performance. Might help to manually recycle/reload/update the dynamic weather.

FL290 is not a problem for any NG at any weight under normal conditions.

Disable Grib weather in download options and try again. Grib causes me strange problems with TAT.

If possible, can you give an example of this problem? Just to make sure we are all talking about the same thinks. I think that:

OAT = Outside air temperature (self explanatory and the value in the weather reports)

SAT = Static air temperature = OAT

TAT = Total air temperature

TAT temperature should (IIRC) increase when the friction between the air and aircraft increases. Roughly speaking, the faster you go, the bigger the difference is between OAT and TAT.

Check your FSX settings. There are 2 options. To display true airspeed and to display indicated airspeed.

Make sure it's set to display indicated airspeed.

What aircraft where you trying to fly, and what was the altimeter reading at the time of the flight?

Not many things leave me speechless but this did.

After doing a few flights above Norway without any problems .....

Have you tried flying above Sweden?

Sorry, couldn't help it.

It's not just friction, it's actually mostly due to the compression of the air molecules.

My first thought was that some oddity of the outside temperature put him at a density altitude a few thousand feet higher than what he thought he was at. Unfortunately, checking the OAT after the fact doesn't tell us what happened during the flight, and TAT won't allow us to calculate density altitude.

I've got a flight test gauge that I add to any aircraft that I fly a lot, and it includes density altitude. You'd be surprised how useful this information is.

Example, Grib on, can't climb to 30'000, Grib off, climbs to 40'000ft easily. Aircraft has 5000kg of fuel. The Tat changes a lot if I alt tab to opus, disable Grib download and restart opus. What the numbers were I can't remember, but I can't fly with it enabled.

You are right, sorry about that. The main point I tried to make was that TAT and SAT/OAT are two different things (even if it might not seem that way when you are on the ground).

I for one, have made the mistake of talking about TAT, when I really was talking about OAT.

Did the same flight again: no problems at ALL. I guess it was a Grib glitch... The next time it happens I will turn of Grib, restart OpusFSX and see what happens! And I'll make a screenshot, of course. ^_^

My Grib is ok on the last few flights, no idea why it affected the oat or tat? Now I have realistic winds and tat is good too. Managed Manchester NH to Glasgow in 5.5 hours with a nice tailwind.

-Iain Watson-

This problem was solved yesterday but of course all the relevant posts are gone forever now. It wasn't Grib for sure... It was my gear... that was down... as someone noticed in a screenshot I posted. First I thought it was a FS2Crew problem (because I was sure I told the co-pilot to raise the gear and I presumed he simply didn't) but later on I discovered the controls for my joystick had been reset automatically... which made the key for swithing views with OpusFSX ALSO a key to lower gear... :excl:

All is fine now. And Grib can't be the problem because (so I've been told) Grib is a forecast and not something that's actually working yet so Grib can not influence the behaviour of a plane or anything!
