Newbie Question: Kosta's Software Guide

Featured Replies

My new build is finally complete and I just loaded a clean copy of FSX. It's my first time using FSX (long time FS9 user), so I'm getting familiar with where files are located.

I have a very newbie slightly embarrassing question. I've found the fsx.cfg file (user/my name/AppDatat/Roaming/Microsoft/FSX) I've read the guide many times to become familiar before making changes. Do I physically type in the tweeks to the fsx.cfg? For example, I would type in the fsx.cfg

[bUFFERPOOLS]

Poolsize=0

Usepools=0

[JOBSCHEDULER]

AffinityMask=14

I thought the above would already be in the fsx.cfg and i would be making edits but I can't find anything.

So, probably a pretty stupid question but I appreciate the advice.

Thanks, CK

Thanks much! That makes more sense after looking at it more closely.

Would I add the tweaks for [DISPLAY] and [GRAPHICS] under what's already in the fsx.cfg? Those headers are already in the cfg or do i create new DISPLAY and GRAPHICS entry's at the bottom of the file? Hope that makes sense

Poolsize=0

These 2 settings basicly do the same thing so you only need one of the 2 under [bUFFERPOOLS]

You have no idea how many stupid questions I've asked, and yours is not a stupid question!\

1). As a general rule, CK, most folks will put the section header and then the parameter, before they put it into a forum post, so that there's no confusion.
2). As you see with the BufferPools and AffinityMask - sometimes a new section and its parameter(s) might be added to the cfg file, thanks to some diligent research done by one of the forum members as a result of multi-core processors becoming available.
Not all of these FSX configuration headers and parameters are used in the stock fsx.cfg file, but are shown in the SDK. (S oftware Development Kit), and so when applicable, and if they now make a difference - they're put in the cfg, tested, tried, and then posted here for all to share.

:wink:

Paul and everyone,

Thanks for the information and help! I think I have my head wrapped around the tweaks but I'm a little paranoid I might have made a mistake. I realize it's a pain to read but I was wondering if someone could take a look at my cfg. I've read Word Not Allowed's guide many many times and think I followed everything. I've put the changes and additions in bold red. Thanks again.

Looks good. How's it fly? I don't know your processor, but with a GTX 680 and no AI traffic, this should rock if you have a Sandybridge or better chip. Note that Word Not Allowed recommends LOD_RADIUS of 6.5 and you have default 4.5. You could play around with 4.5, 5.5, 6.5 and see if you notice any difference. LOD_RADIUS of 6.5 can sharpen things up a bit. Are you running Nvidia inspector? There are some good recommendations for that in the guide as well.

Also, conventional wisdom is to NOT put FSX in the program Files (x86) directory. But if you don't see any issues, play on.

Don Polidori

An AffinityMask setting of 14 is appropriate for a quad core processor with no hyperthreading, and forces FSX to use 3 cores leaving one core free for non FSX overheads. If you have an i7 CPU and have not disabled hyperthreading in BIOS the equivalent AfinityMask setting is 84 which again forces FSX to use 3 physical cores and leaves the remaining 4 virtual and one phisical cores free for non FSX processing.

Thanks again everyone for the advice and help for my newbie questions.

I have the i7 3770K.

Dap192: I am running Nvidia inspector and made those tweaks from Word Not Allowed's guide. I didn't want to clog up the thread to much with a bunch of screen shots and felt pretty confident making the changes. Things are running pretty well, but I'm still doing a lot of tweaking. I'm running 3 monitors, so that has it's list of problems and issues to fix, which I'm sorting through now. I was a little bummed after reading threads two days ago about not putting FSX in the(X86) directory. I started downloading a couple of planes and installing some addons after reading the info. There are some many little details to get things correct with FSX. I've been using FS9 for ages, so this is new to me.

PieEater: I think I read the guide correctly but correct me if I'm wrong. I did disable HT in the BIOS, so kept AffinityMask at 14.

Cheers!

Chris B. Trane

In Nvidia Inspector, i think you should use 4 SGSS without any problems, you have video card for that

Be careful though, if you use a textures addon like REX with 4096 cloud textures, I don't think there's any video card that can handle that with 4 SGSS. I use 2 SGSS and 1024 cloud textures on an OC'ed GTX 660Ti and that gives me good framerates even in heavy clouds.

Barry Friedman

I use same the settings, becouse 4096 clouds is too much for my 560ti in bad weather. And i use 2 SGSS becouse of extra fps for maddog and ngx

I am currently using 84 as I have a Gateway FX6860 system with an I7 2600. I verify hyper threading via Task Manager. I have applied the registry entries eliminate parking of cores. I would like to disable hyperthreading for FSX use, but my BIOS does not show a hyper threading option. Is Intel VT the same as hyperthreading?

Yes, with HT disabled a mask of 14 is appropriate.

No, Virtualisation Technology (VT) is different from Hyperthreading.
