January 17, 201313 yr Came across an interesting documentary from back in 1971 on the introduction of the Boeing 747-100. Talking to the cabin and flight crew about the advances of the 747 and comparisons to the 707. Such a different era in flying compared to now, quite nostalgic to look back... Worth a watch if anyone has 6 minutes to spare. http://euscreen.eu/p...6545257027FACDA Regards, Ró. Rónán O Cadhain.
January 17, 201313 yr Thank you very much. Nice documentary. Nostalgic feelings/memories. Sam. Waiting for the 64-bit PSION Flightsim for ZX-Spectrum ////
January 17, 201313 yr I have stutters (no kidding) on that video. Stop watching it! Because I wanna watch it. Back when people flew without colours. Everything was grey or sepia. But I see Aer Lingus had 747. So they've changed their setup since, now, you don't run those big planes, right? Max size is the A330.
January 17, 201313 yr Great video. Loved the guy's accent. I remember about that time a friend and I were at Dallas Love Field about 3 am, and we saw our first 747 there. We started chatting with the maintenance crew, and they offered to give us a tour of the entire airplane. It was incredible. In those days I had no idea what all that stuff in the cockpit was. Hook Larry Hookins Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of EarthAnd danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
January 17, 201313 yr And, now, when you ask if you can take a closer look, everybody looks :mad: at you. :(
January 17, 201313 yr Author Another documentary on the 747 from 1975 this time: Captain Aidan Quigley heading up the flight this time. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1E-iMDMz8HM But I see Aer Lingus had 747. So they've changed their setup since, now, you don't run those big planes, right? Max size is the A330. Indeed, we operated up to 3 747s at one point in time, all the -100 but the last was retired in 1996 IIRC. One had the highest number of both cycles and hours a 747 had ever accumulated by the time one was retired due to the old Shannon stopover rule. Also the DUB-SNN was the worlds shortest flight that a 747 ever operated as a regular commercial service. Quite a history with them. A330 of course came along in '94 was the best thing to ever happen to our transatlantic service, basically making it financially viable. Regards Ró. Rónán O Cadhain.
January 17, 201313 yr Author Another little gem, a television advert from around the same period, first airing in 1978 AFAIK: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p_i3iX6ozvI Getting all nostalgic this evening LOL... Regards, Ró. Rónán O Cadhain.
January 18, 201313 yr Look at all that food in the good old days. Who cares about progress when there is no more good food to enjoy/celebrate the trip. Thanks for sharing the memories, they will go along way with mines. Cheers,
January 18, 201313 yr Thanks for that... Enjoy that video too... I also really enjoyed this one: http://youtu.be/t5w62jHUovM RJ
January 18, 201313 yr Also the DUB-SNN was the worlds shortest flight that a 747 ever operated as a regular commercial service. Quite a history with them. I remember Jasper Carrot made a comment on this in Dublin when he was over for a gig. He stated that he flew from UK to Ireland on a tiny aircraft and an internal flight on a 747. Jude BradleyBeech Baron: Uh, Tower, verify you want me to taxi in front of the 747?ATC: Yeah, it's OK. He's not hungry. January 18, 201313 yr Author Another video from the same year 1971, this time discussing disputes relating to landing rights in other countries and bi-lateral agreements. Something many people now will become more and more unfamiliar with due to the open skies agreement. http://euscreen.eu/p...E91A6FFCE6E056F And another gem, this one from 1987, just months before I started my training as a pilot, featuring Capt Piper who was one of the Captains at Aer Lingus who trained me in on the 737CL when I started my type rating. http://euscreen.eu/p...F882D4FC15AAB35 Really amazing stuff to look back at all this 23 years on. Regards, Ró. Rónán O Cadhain.
January 18, 201313 yr Yes, I remember the good old Protectionism mood everywhere in those days and not just Ireland. Just pure fear of unstoppable changes and the lost of tight regional controls soon to come by. Forty years went by. Sweet Mother of ******* my Irish friends would say. Cheers,
