February 10, 201313 yr This is how you clear the driveway when the snow blower craps out and shoveling isn't an option. And that is also how you will create ice...by compacting the snow. Unless the sun comes out and melts it all away then you have nothing to worry about (which looks like it will). Hope your back gets better Kevin as I went through a few problems with mine a while back as well, my therapy did work for me over time. Enjoy the white stuff everyone as it is middle of summer where I am. I have been windsurfing all weekend here so it has been bizarre to see all these snow pictures on here and on Facebook when I am wearing shorts and t-shirt. Cheers Matthew Kane I'm Dyslexic, what's an error to you is not to me
February 10, 201313 yr Yes, well, a back injury as a result of a serious car accident is what prevents me from shoveling in the first place. My dad's out of the country, and my mom was supposed to do it yesterday, but never did, so I didn't really have much of a choice. That's what I suspected, but I wasn't sure whether mentioning it would be appropriate. Aren't there commercial shoveling services where you live, or are they too expensive?
February 10, 201313 yr Hi, all. I am just curious - when facing a monster winter storm such as Nero in the New York and New England areas, do airlines try to move as many planes out of the area while they can, or do they leave them in place and deal with clean up afterwards? An airplane and crew that can't move is an airplane and crew that can't make money by moving to where the load peaks might occur in the aftermath. Generally, the idea is to get both jets and crews out of the affected area to preserve flexibility (but not always, depending on the expected closure time and other factors). Having assets stuck in place not only affects traffic at that airport, but everywhere else the jet and/or crews were supposed to transit. I know of a tenured operations research professor at a major US university that makes big money working for an airline doing supercomputer-based multivariate optimization modelling that finds the best way to position assets in a major regional closure event like this. I believe they were already cancelling flights in/out of Logan as early as Thursday to get things positioned for the expected closures from Superduperultramegamambomassivostorm Nemo. February 10, 201313 yr And that is also how you will create ice...by compacting the snow. Unless the sun comes out and melts it all away then you have nothing to worry about (which looks like it will). Well, my top priority was making sure the MDX had a clear path along the driveway. Everything else, I'm just going to let the sun take care of since I can't really manually clear the snow without killing myself here. The rest of the driveway was already clear, it was just the one path that hadn't been clear as the snow blower decided to crap out before I had the chance to get to it. That's what I suspected, but I wasn't sure whether mentioning it would be appropriate. Aren't there commercial shoveling services where you live, or are they too expensive? I'm not aware of any. I knew one of my neighbors, before they moved away, who would bring out a lawn tractor with a plow and clear people's driveways for them....for $20. My parents didn't really like that one too much. It didn't help that the day they'd asked, I was already halfway done. Although given the amount of snow we had, if they were still living around here, the amount of snow we got would have been more than that little plow could handle. For the most part, we just take care of it ourselves. Normally, I can clear the driveway on my own no problem, but the back injury screwed me up to the point where even a box of pizza was too heavy for me to move. February 10, 201313 yr I live in Norway, although we have a lot of snow, two-four feet in 24 hours is not something that happens every winter. But, three feet is nothing a 10hp blower cant handle Edit: Sry about the dual picture, Tapatalk is not all too bright...
February 11, 201313 yr Like the airlines, I "cancelled" my trip into work Friday, and instead "repositioned" myself at Sunday River ski resort in Maine. We skied during the storm and in its windy aftermath on Saturday, and today (Sunday) we had a more normal day. The forecast for my last day of this mini-vacation on Monday is for a bit more snow. Checking in with neighbors, the power never went out, and we have a guy with a truck who plows us out, so I expect things to be pretty normal when I get home.
February 12, 201313 yr Or it could just rain today and wash some of this stuff away. That works, too. Captain Kevin Air Kevin 124 heavy, wind calm, runway 4 left, cleared for take-off. Live streams of my flights here.
