Flight One ATR 72-500, is it still worth for 50 bucks?

Featured Replies

My experience with the ATR is in FSX. However, it's the same model, so it could be similar issues.

When you install a new AIRAC from Navdata for example, you select a STAR, then go to your VNAV page to get the ToD information, it's likely to crash FSX. This is my biggest bugbear and it it wasn't for this issue, it would be near-perfect.

There was an issue with Northern routes and VNAV AP oscillations, but I've never tried to replicate that issue.

On a positive note:

The interior and exterior model is good

Hotel mode is simulated

It's a great plane to fly

Mid-air reverse thrust is a great novelty as is a powered pushback

The FMC is well featured and includes holding patterns

Good liveries available

A lot of issues are resolved on the ATR Flight 1 forums

In my opinion, it's well worth it.

I wish someone would make the -600 series!

I like it for that very different approach, the exterior sounds and appreciate it as a (fully working and enjoyable) piece of flightsim history. The ATR is still one of those milestones in MSFS development with Hans Hartmann, for example, having been a core member of the development team and still a great long-term contributor to our flightsimming hobby.

Well said man, ATR has been mentioned as one of the best as well as the first complex addon as you just said. but I just didn't see turboprop would be fun years ago. But a "must have" never fails, I depend on that hahaha

72-600 would be great! a longer fuselage and range.. one thing that I love the most is the fuselage looks well fitted. Thanks for the pic, is the first picture taken from FSX?

How long has this been out??.....

Only just seen it has a VC..

[The ATR-72 was] the first complex addon ...

As far as I'm concerned the first truly complex addon was the original Wilco 767 for FS2002 I believe it was. The same team later rewrote it for a different company to be today's Level D 767.

The first seriously realistic addon that I can recall was Graham Waterfield's SR-71 for ... I'm going to say FS2000. It even included the engine sounds of the auxilliary Buick start cart.

Yours truly believes that Waterfield set the early standard for realistic panels and realistic FDE. He is an artist and a craftsman, combining all the skills of an entire advanced development team in one individual.

Can't speak on behalf of the OP but G.W. has been a great contributor for me, too. One of his titles back in FS2002, I was really crazy of, were the PSS Airbusses. I continued to fly them when they got ported into FS2004 and it took a lot of time to see anything close to that development (never been really convinced of the Wilco Airbus series/evolution upgrade).

No offence intended on my side (and probably not on anyone else's).

The PSS Airbus series ... Did Graham do the FMC in those aircraft? I don't recall it, the FMC being why I bought the Wilco 767. I simply wanted to understand what an FMC is capable of as well as how to program it.

if you want a turboprop (250kt @ 20000') or so on short regional flights, no vnav but lnav, no autothrottle but with a "fair vc, fps, fde etc". $50 is a worthy investment.

the F1 ATR does not have the candy of the AXE but at least you can "fly it".

for now, cheers

The "sidestick term" would be MCDU ...   :P

Can't see that piece of information on the internet; will take a look at the manual this evening (MESZ).

If you're an FSX user I'd suggest holding on to your $50 and getting the Majestic's Dash 8 Q400 as it's probably going to be released within the next 1-3 weeks.

If you're sticking with FS9, you won't find a finer turboprop airliner than Flight 1's ATR 72-500; it set new standards on release (I seem to remember it was the first addon with windscreen wipers that actually cleared the water off the screen, they even smeared!) and it's still worth today what it was when released, the game hasn't really moved on all that much since then. You won't regret purchasing it.

I have never had a problem with the ATR AP using FSX and its a really good plane to fly just its old.

Flight 1 don't have plans for a new SP for it so if you have problems your kind of stuck with them.

I can fly all my PW planes without problems and just sometimes the ATR to crash dll file. or even with programing the FMC.

You can bet the MJC will be double the $50 for the ATR.

You can bet all you want, the price has already been announced; the Majestic Q400 will be €50, so US$65.

Where would you like to pay my winnings to, bank account or paypal? :P

Kindly explain -- My understanding is that an MCDU is a display technology, not a flight management computer (FMC) technology.

Okay, here are a few of the common terms and what they relate to.

The computer(s) that does the navigation and performance calculations:

  • FMC, Flight Management Computer
  • FMS, Flight Management System
  • FMGS, Flight Management and Guidance System

The display and keyboard that interfaces with the aforementioned computer(s):

  • CDU, Control and Display Unit
  • MCDU, Multifunction Control and Display Unit
