FS9 is STILL the #1 flight simulator for 'heavy' operations!

Excellent work!!!

When you guys say HD ground textures from FSX, are you saying it stays clear and sharp at low altitudes like FSX?  Or does it convert the FSX HD textures to FS9 resolution?

Groovin, I was thinking the same thing...what Jon and Peter are doing here, I find amazing!  I hope this pans out as a general to all, release or upload!

My own tweaked merge from various sources, converted from FSX, improved from FS2002, some from GE PRO, some my own, + various freeware textures from AVSIM, AVSIMRUS, FLIGHTSIM, all in 8bit/indexed BMP format without MIPMAPS, mostly without alphas, new custom mask and light masks.

I'd pay you for your ground texture combination, truly outstanding work.  All the scenery packages you took from I already own.  The only thing I would recommend to you is Zinertech's water.  You could package the rest of that and make a small fortune in FS standards (like Dragon Speak is doing when text to speak ability is already a feature of default Windows).  Once many FSX'ers find out FS9 actually can run higher detailed ground textures without all the performance hassle of FSX the FS9 community will have a whole lot more members.  Something like this breaths more life into an already outstanding version of FS.

Let's be careful and not distribute any payware textures here. There has been mention that some of these are modified from a payware program.

Absolutely. The consequences could be very ugly for whoever does. Please re-read our ToS' just to make sure everyone understands our rules regarding this.

Or ask permission...

And be prepared to show it to us BEFORE anyone uploads or attaches anything containing re-worked commercial add-on's.

I'll add to the chorus - it's the Last Frontier we're dealing with, as Dillon has mentioned.

I'm sure most will gladly pay for whatever source files are used, and perhaps a bit on top for whatever it takes to use them. If proprietary, maybe the product key could be used to enable the modified files, if the author permits.

At the very least, it would be great to know What and Where and What's Involved.

The forum's power lies in having interested folk who might contribute in various ways.

So Peter of GEP is just going to say, go ahead and use my GEP textures for a few $$?

Digressing a moment... but it may save some irritation and effort down the road.

I see there is a filter available for "hiding posts below xxx points" which sounds like a good idea but apparently isn't implemented here.

Are there any other filters available to screen spam on this forum?

A lot of fs9 textures are 256x256. Like city textures etc. Take for instance that freeware St Lucia scenery posted here that has small town section between runway and water. I copied a 1024 x 1024 city tile from FSX to replace the one he used, and it worked. Looked a little better. Still experimenting with that one.

Those rock textures I used are originally for FSX at 4096 x 4096. Can't be used in FS9. Resized to 1024x1024 and they CAN be used. And look great. As you can see. And im flying pretty close to that section too. But they won't stay as sharp when close like FSX. But still betters then default FS9!

So that's the key. Any 1024 textures drawn well will look good. But 4096 reduced will look as good if not better because the starting resolution being sharper.

Aime has freeware stuff available and I've done all areas. Forests etc. which look good too. Just working on fixing a few weird things at the moment.

Thanks so much for the info.  Still, 1024 is a massive leap over the default 256.  This is amazing how you guys figured out how to do this.  Your mountain rock textures are definitely sharp.  I notice your mesh terrain is amazing too.  I can't wait to get FS Global 2010.

I seriously hope some developers decide to take advantage of this.  I'd go nuts if there is a new global texture set released at 1024 resolution.  Good luck on your conversions and getting the legal matters sorted out.  This is definitely new to me.  I had no idea FS9 can look like this.

The only thing I would recommend to you is Zinertech's water.

Hi Dillon,

Have you looked at Real H2O Water?  I used Zinertek water until I decided to try H2O last week.  Much better than Zinertek water, IMO.

And some PHOTO textures (from my old computer), I think FS2004 can handle photo terrain very well. (BLUE SKY SCENERY)

That shots are taken from high altitude and and are very much zoomed out..

Take the same shots at 2000 Feet AGL and from 1.00 Zoomed cockpit view(Actual real cockpit view) and you will see how it will look then.

Was very easy and I'm a newbie. With convimx and free photoshop 2 or something, batch file conversions and resizing are easy. But not even CLOSE to making it available. Got some bugs to iron out. And while the files I used are freeware, still need permission from owner of them. Although after contacting him, he has wanted to do them for fs9, just not able too at the moment.

But wouldn't take a developer too much to convert some already available FSX textures back to FS9. Less work then totally new textures because they already exist. Release them as payware at a descent price, and they'd pick extra $$$ they wouldn't have got for the little time spent converting them.

By the way that mesh is all part of the Glacier Bay freeware add-on. Perhaps the higher resolution textures make it look more rugged which is a bonus.

And the above photoscenery is from Blue Sky which is what was stated originally.

I may give it a try but I'm not very technical with all the resizing and conversions.  I just know I would run into bugs and other things.

I certainly hope some developers are lurking around this forum and reading this thread.  I would pay for this type of add ons.  Something like Aerosoft Ibiza, Mallorca, Madeira, Tahiti X, etc where whole islands are covered would be insane.  I already own them for FSX and FS9, but outside of the airport areas in FS9, you get the usual blurry low res FS9 textures.  I'm guessing those are 256  res. because they look as blurry as the default textures.  Getting whole coverage at 1024 would be a huge improvement.

At the moment I'm flying heavies, but next time I'm in the mood for VFR, I'm going to download the Glacier Bay scenery.  Yeah, I think the sharper textures give the illusion of higher mesh resolution.  That's great.

Some great little airstrips and airports in the Glacier Bay add-on. Those guys did a great job. Try it out. Alaska Airlines fly some 737's into a couple airports there like PAJN so can still fly the big Iron there.

And yeah....still pretty sharp close up. What's pretty cool is when you zoom WAY into the rocks, it's actually that clover grass!!!

I'm gonna try it out.  Thanks.  Is it compatible with Ultimate Terrain?

Looks like you just answered a question on my grass thread.  I had no idea upgraded grass textures appear outside of the airports.
