FTX Global, is it worth it?

Or you could move the whole sim default folder.  and symlink to it from the original location.

Dang. I forgot to write option 4  LOL

Judging from the screenshots I really don't get it, why should I buy regions any more. Those added and enhanced airports aren't so great. And FTXG adds autogen and even villages. Anyone got a screenshot comparison from Seattle area with only FTXG and only FTX PNW?

You should buy regions for region specific textures, region specific autogen, region specific 3D buildings, photoreal parts, roads, waters, coastlines, mesh, landclass... In short, there is more than enough reason to buy regions. However, only if you really like flying there obviously: the world has become a lot more interesting with FTXG so it could well be that Orbx will be selling less regions because people like FTXG and don't need anything more (specially if you already have landclass, mesh, something like UTX for roads and waters). I for one will buy FTX Norway South because that's my favorite region to fly in but if FTXG had been around longer I probably wouldn't have bought FTX England where I don't fly that often. I will however buy FTX airports for Norway, again because it's my favorite region, so Orbx will be getting a lot of my money anyway.

Sorry I'm this stubborn, but Ftxg has region specific textures and autogen and like many of us have UTX products, so landclass is not needed...

FTXG doesn't really have region specific textures. It only replaces the default FSX textures so it won't get more region specific than that, really. Unless you want to call for instance all of Asia a region. FTX regions are much smaller, even smaller than one country so the textures will be FAR more specific and varied and unique than you will ever see with FTXG.

Things will change a little when OpenLC has been released: that's landclass plus textures for large regions (Europe, Asia, etc: the world has been divided into 7 parts) but even then FTX regions will offer FAR more specific and unique textures.

Of course OpenLC will make even more people doubt about getting FTX regions or not... Maybe Orbx will drop the price on those regions: I would buy a lot more of them if they cost 50% of what they cost now.

Is it worth it?  Well, I'd say that this one single purchase will give you a virtual FSXI 'refresh'.  Yeah...I'd say that it is worth it!  Like all others, I use to stick around to what was familiar territory, or avoided such areas as South America, because of fake-looking scenery, very synthetic, etc.

Now?

I don't have enough sim time in the day or evening to fly over ANYWHERE on the FSX planet, and that it doesn't look absolutely convincing it is the real deal below the wing. I'm not going to address absolute color of the texture in some areas of the world that has turned off some. Nope...it LOOKS like what you see on the planet below you, the fields, towns, cities, (with present UTX for the region as well).  OpenLC will fine tune and take care of any color-texture issues in specific areas of the globe and whether it should be dry as a bone, or lush green, etc.

But does it turn your FSX into as  'real-as-it-gets'?  On August 20th, 2013 IT SURE DOES!......

The one thing FSXG has brought to my attention, is that I realize now in my life-stye...I don't have nearly enough 'goof-off' time that I would like per day....bummer....

Such a very subjective statement.  'As real as it gets' is defined in so many different ways.  Each one of us has our own definition of it or what we look for from the sim to make it 'As real as it gets'.  I'm still almost trying to force myself to buy this product but just haven't seen that video or pic that has allowed me to click the purchase button yet.  Is there any money back option with this?  Maybe from Flight1 - if they even sell it?

If you are trying to "force" yourself to buy this product then I would suggest it is not for you.  Many of us (me!!  me!!) got into a cold sweat when we first saw it and couldn't wait to D/L it.  For us, it is definitely "worth it"  For you?? Maybe not so much.

I think it is only available from Orbx supported dealers "The FlightSim Store" being the approved source.  Not sure about refunds from that outlet.  I would expect that considering the relationship between NickN at Flight1 and John V at Orbx, Flight1 will never offer the product.

I guess it depends on how right you want things to be.  Regions are hand optimized and are far better than any landclass scenery I've seen to date.  People forget that most have a large amount of POI added as well as substantial annotated photoscenery.  Fly over the thermal areas of Yellowstone, for example, and you'll see geysers spouting, or over the glaciers in Alaska, where you'll see incredible true detail.

And then there're the airports - man I could NOT disagree more with your point about the airports as I think they're one of the most under-appreciated pieces of an Orbx region.  Upgraded airports are terrific, as they take default airports and update them to match the real thing as closely as they can given objects available in the Orbx libraries.  What this typically means is that buildings will be where they should really be, and will be of the correct type as closely as can be matched in the extensive libs without doing custom.  And this gets done for pretty much every airport in the region.  For us GA guys it doesn't get much better than this.

I'm guessing you don't have, for example, Southern Alaska, with all of it's photoscenery and airports that even include flows.

Good as FTXG may be, regions are still worth having in any area you're wanting to focus on.

That Alaska is the only region I don't have. And Great Britain, which I will not purchase in forseeable future. But Alaska is under consideration, I thought I would buy UTX Alaska and FTGX and live happily everafter.

+1, no, +147

The default (within any of the regions) airports are definitely a cut or 10 above FSX default and the payware airports are truly works of art with many treasures and surprises to find as you tour the airport grounds, complete with music and party goers.

I agree.  It goes back to my quote before about what is "as real as it gets" to each of us.  For me, I'm a photo real guy.  Real to me now is photo real scenery.  Even though this FTX Global will make things look much "prettier" on the ground, it's still not actually what I'd see there if I were flying over that spot on the planet.

So, I want to like this product for a couple reasons...I'd like to not have to go through the time consuming process of making photo real scenery and/or buying photo real regions.  I'd like to go back to my pre-photo real days and be happy with landclass/autogen, but I can't.  It would be cheaper in the long run now with this great product.  But, I just can't get past the "it's not as real it gets" to me.

***Disclaimer  I am so not trying to start a war between photo real and not.  Nor am I trying to push photo real on anyone.  Nor am I saying photo real IS the best for EVERYONE.  This is just for me and in my eyes.  And, that may be like you are saying, the biggest reason why this is not for me.
