Hi guys,

 

As a forum dweller I want to kind of document on my progress in the aviation world, which is not particularly related to 'FLYING' the aircraft. I want to give people an insight and also answer any questions that may arise and keep you guys as involved as possible in this career sector.

 

What am I doing and why are you telling us this you ask? Well, in July of this year, I graduated from a University with a bachelor of arts in music after 3 years. I am obviously in the same boat as many, and I was looking for jobs related to my honours degree or any job I could get. Despair is what I faced, I fell out of love with a lot of the aspects of music including the industry and the structure.

 

Here cometh the reconsideration of my life. Where do I go now? What do I do? 

 

I decided that I was going to go for aviation in any way I could, I sought advice and adjusted my CV to match jobs for a local leisure airline near me. Applying to different aspects of the business I was unsuccessful in  some, but the golden call came, inviting me for a assessment day, for airline dispatch [it's a very different job compared to the American dispatcher]. I took the difficult decision to cut my dreadlocks which was very difficult, and proceed to interview.

 

2 months later here we are, Monday morning, up at 6:00am sharp (shock to the system for a student who hasn't been up that early since he was 18) I arrived at the security office at the airport. With a temporary 5 day pass in hand, 2 more fresh faced hopefuls went through staff security (away from the  very busy passenger building) and going through  we arrived on airside. High Viz jacket put on over my civilian clothes, I had that holiday feeling but fueled with nervousness and excitement but I was airside, in a security car, driving on the ramp. A British Airways A319 was just turning onto stand, meters away from me. I made it, I was here.

 

The morning rush was evident as a flurry of 737-300's, 737-800's, Dash 8's and 757-200's were all boarding passengers ready for their summer holidays. We drove along the apron heading towards the company office.

 

 

Not to bore you with details, day one was most health and safety and how to correctly lift a box (straight back! Use those legs!) day two got interesting.

Remember, if you sent them to the wrong place, at least give them some extra fuel. ^_^

Never flown to anywhere from Leeds, but, All The Very Best in your career in aviation, Alex. Who know, you may yet be featured in another fly-on-the-wall Airline, if ITV ever re-make another series. Like CoolP, said, make sure the fuel shortage is not down to you! Have fun, and keep warm in that Yorks weather.

I used to have long hair too, but its necessary in the days where jobs are tight to look your best! Good to hear your on a career you enjoy
