Piper Tomahawk for FS9

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I am in search for a good quality (visual and system) freeware PA38 for FS9 for some lite flight training purposes.  I remember that Carenado created a free one back in the days, and JF FlyingClub has one.  Does anyone know whether there are other better ones or are they the best you're going to get?

If so, out of the two, which would be more popular?

I also had a search in AVSIM library and google in general, can't seemed to find many sources on this bird.  If anyone have better knowledge on this, please let me know.

Thanks in advance.

There really aren't any good Tomahawks out there for free. The old Carenado one was created for FS2000, so it has no VC and is very old.

The JF Flying Club Tomahawk is old, but it is superb. Though it is dated, the quality of its creation cannot be hidden. It has become one of my favorites.

Thanks for the information, so essentially the JF one is our only option?  The recent Alabeo one seems exceptional, except it's for FSX.

Doesn't anyone remember the "Chincul PA-A-38 Tomahawk" from 2006? Jeez...

It's been a long time and I didn't fly her much but at the time it was quite an impressive model as I recall. Freeware by Adrian Fernandez Gomez. I'm sure it's not on the level of the Alabeo of course and I have no idea if the flight dynamics are any good. You may dig up some old threads about it here or over at flightsim.com if you search the forums for "Chincul". Looks like the file was a victim of the Avsim library saga a few years back but it's still available at flightsim.com:

Oh... ooops. I rather forgot about that one...

Of course I just installed it and took a flight, lol. Well, when you consider that 2D panels were the thing to have back in 2006 it's still a pretty nice freeware, the VC leaves a bit to be desired when you're used to riding around in Carenado VCs

Nonetheless I did a flight from KBHB Bar Harbor, Maine to 93B Stonington Mun and then on to 57B Islesboro. An hour, all from the VC. Enjoyed it!

Still are!

Lol, old habits die hard?

I was a 2D die-hard myself until I bought the Carenado Arrow IV which was the first plane I ever flew that didn't have a 2D panel. Didn't have much choice but to fly from the VC in that one, and before I knew it I was a convert!

Cool cool, thanks all for the replies.  It seems there isn't that many options around.  Since this is for an organisation, I'll see if I can get them to get the JF one, seems like the most logical option.

I had a look at the JF site, they have FC and FC2, as well as PA38 on its own, are they any different?  Is the PA38 just a standalone extract of what's in the FC2?

I have tried to get used to the VC (tried FSX many times as well) but I just can't seem to make friends with either of them. Maybe I should try your method, get a plane that does not have a 2D panel and I will just have to run with that. The move to FSX may be, I think, a little more involved!

Yes I think the JF version is the only reasonable PA-38 you will get for FS9. I have just purchased the new Alabeo PA-38 for FSX and have been flying it tonight - it is excellent but sadly, like most developers, I doubt if Alabeo will produce one for FS9, unless they use the Carenado system of converting FSX aircraft to FS9.

Man, I solo'ed in a traumahawk back in 1983.    What a POS that airplane is.    T tail makes buffeting a problem and gave me at least a tendency toward air sickness.   Never had that problem in any other aircraft.

LOL, I trained on it as well, never had enough $$ to get to solo stage though...  But my "client" wanted it, and I'm not about to go get them to change their minds ;)

I test-flew one in the early '90's which was for sale, but its anemic performance and funky stall behavior prompted me to look elsewhere for my first airplane purchase.  Ended up with a C-150, which I still regret selling.

When I was learning to fly, my instructor said they were nicknamed the "crash-a-hawk". He said there were quite a few accidents with that tail section breaking off. Piper came out with a fix for it, but I don't know how well that worked out.
