I Loathe FSDT's COUATL!

Featured Replies

This GSX addon which is a great add-on, no mistaking that, but it is so, so frustrating to use at times. Working perfectly yesterday, now all of sudden despite seeing it in the drop-down Add-on-Couatl-powered products complete with another drop-down menu, it still does not show up any of the GSX features. So, cannot basically use it. Trying to re-install it causes an error flag. All this occurred after I finally managed to successfully thru a long-meandered manner, activate my 7 FSDT airports, which as someone has pointed here, are great airports. If only the tag-on rather than Add-on Manager worked as well.

What's the purpose? As was pointed out by robains, Umberto takes no notice of errors highlighted. And more to the point, why is that piece of software that uses a built-in method(eSellerate) of validating purchases then requires one when re-installing a previously-purchased add-on scenery to go through the hoops of sending an email with the order code, then wait for the activation key, then waste time copy/pasting each of those activation key boxes?

Most folks never have errors with the software - note that the forum is hardly flooded with complaints.  If you back up the generated reg keys when a scenery is installed (as recommended by the installer) you need never go through any hoops to re-install the scenery or wait for an activation code...

Yeah, on hindsight maybe should have done that but as I lost the SSD where the OS,FSX,etc, etc was, I then had to re-install everything from scratch, so would not have been able use those generated keys. Nevertheless, a good suggestion for the future.

Actually those reg keys will work on any system - they are not tied to the machine they were generated on...

I think I should just be contended with Fly Tampa and Aerosofts Mega airports. I really don't need so many airports.

FlyTampa airports are indeed terrific...but so are FSDT's KLAS, KLAX, KJFK, etc, etc...can't do without them, I'm afraid.

I live in Dallas..so DFW is important..so is LA and LAS and PHNL (Honolulu).  I also need PHX from flight beam. I can forgo others. But yeah..its difficult for me to to let go of the ones I have listed.

How about this whole heap of crap from Couatl just as I'm about to land at EGCC in low vis? Just about sums it up! If it were not for the fact that I've paid good cash for the 7 Airport Add-ons +GSX, I'd have ditched this nonsense a long while back, 3 days ago, in fact.

Too bad it takes all these additional programs just to use a scenery or utility.

Count me as another one with problems. I have a post over there right now  trying to re-install. The whole thing seems more complicated than it needs to be.

Precisely! A very good point. But will Umberto and his team take any notice? I doubt it which is why I do not even bother going there.

To be fair, most of my issues with the Couatl Engine / Add-on Manager is not around crashes and the need to re-install, etc, it is just that in my opinion, it's an intrusive bloated design.   I do not want pop-ups, in sim, for updates to Couatl, or Addon Manager, or again pop-ups asking (for reasons I've not yet nailed) if I "want to restart the Couatl engine?" in the middle of sim sessions.

I want my product updates to be off-sim, not interrupting my sessions.

The tipping point for me with Couatl was after a 6 hours MD-11 flight, when I landed, hit CTRL+F12 for the GSX dialogue and got a "Couatle Engine Error" pop-up that would not clear (just kept reappearing every time I hit enter) and that ended up killing a 4 hour flight, requiring me to close FSX via Task Manager.

In that case, I wouldn't have had a particular issue with GSX crashing and not working in this session......... but that fact that Couatl caused the failure of my whole flight sim session, led me to decide not to buy any further products that use this FSDT platform.

I've just put my buyers choice into action today, as I was in the market for a new high detail add-on airport in Europe;  my first preference (and the one I still wish I could have had; without the FSDT bloatware) was FSDT Zurich ..... but I changed my buying choice to FlyTampa Athens purely due to the FSDT Add-on Manager / Couatl considerations.

That is what did it for me  too , Dave. Everything that you have stated is spot-on. I tell you, if it were not for the fact I shelled out good money for the 7 airports, I'd ditch this. I'm intrigued that I assume a US-based developer like FSDT got tied in with a European-based developer like Cloud9. If my memory serves me right in the yonder days of FS9 there were constant forum posts about Cloud9 products and the lacklustre support from them.

I'm of the same frame of mind with you there.

And again, you are bang on the money, Dave as I have never had any issues with FlyTampa sceneries and moreoever, there are hardly any posts about them being bad here.

I know how you feel Rick. I wish I had never updated GSX the other day. things have not been right since. Even though I had to re install, I did not have an older version. I am too bloody scared to go near it now :(
