Flight Planners

Featured Replies

Hi all, I would just like other simmers opinion's on what flight planners we prefer? Pro-atc, PFP-X, I know there's others but feed back would appreciated.

Cheers Rod.

Thanks guy's.

I use 7 "planners": FS Commander, FSBuild, PFPX, vRoute, eurofpl.eu, flightaware.com and rfinder.

- FS Commander for looking up gate assingments (for ProATC/X).

- FSBuild for fuel and payload planning for planes that PFPX doesn't support

- PFPX for fuel and payload planning for most of my jets

- flightaware.com for looking up routes for US flights (better routes than PFPX auto generated)

- eurofpl.eu for looking up routes when flying in Europe (PFPX auto generated routes do not usually pass European route validation rules)

- If eurofpl.eu and flightaware.com do not have a route for my flight, I will create it with rfinder and use vRoute for validating. Much faster, than with PFPX.

I have not purchased PFPX .. just reading what others are saying on various forums.

I gather there is a lot of time spent setting up PHPX .. customizing for various aircraft.

And some problems getting routes generated .. as you mentioned here.

"PFPX for fuel and payload planning for most of my jets" ... Is there a lot of data look ups and data entry required to set up PFPX to do this?

Also .. some pilots reporting the program crashing ... hopefully isolated cases .. maybe new software Hot Fixes either causing it or will fix e.g.?

Hi,

I looked at the u-tube video .. says it is a VFR only flight planner?

If you fly the aircrafts that have performance figures already built in, the initial setup doesn't take more than a couple of minutes. If your aircraft has a ready to go template (like some PMDG aircraft and AXE), then setup time is very fast.

On the other hand, If your aircraft doesn't have the PFPX performance figures, it takes quite a lot of time patience. It took me about 6h to create a profile for the E145XR from scratch.

When it comes to PFPX crashing, I personally have to use PFPX in a particular way to keep it from crashing. I seem to have the most incompatible laptop for running PFPX. Win XP SP2 with an old ATI graphics card.

Users with Win 7 and NVIDIA cards seem to have the least problems with PFPX (if at all).

For 50.00 PFPX needs to be more complete...I'm not going to spend hours and hours setting up aircraft profiles. Maybe when it goes on sale for 50% off ill pick it up. Fscommander is the best planner IFR planner hands now.

PFPX.  No doubt.  Not encountered a crash yet.

Like I mentioned above, I use a combination of 7 softwares for planning. FS Commander is one of them. If FSC is working for you, then no problems there.

Having used many of the softwares out there, I have to say, that FSC only scratches the surface of what you can do with PFPX.

When I said, I spent 6h creating a totally new aircraft, I entered data that can't even be entered into FSC. Things like:

- Climb rate and fuel burns for gross weights between 29000 and 53000lbs and temperatures between ISA-10 and ISA+10

- Holding fuel flow for gross weights between minimum landing fuel and max landing fuel

- Cruise fuel flow and cruise TAS for gross weights between 30000 and 53000lbs and temperatures between ISA-10 and ISA+10

...

For most aircrafts you do not have to do this. Just wanted to give you an idea why your fuel calculations with PFPX match the in sim fuel figures within couple of hundred pounds.

Thanks Rod for posting this.  I have only been using the default FSX flight planner, but now I am aware of other options thanks to this thread.  I goggled and found the Mutley's Hanger review of "Plan G".  For me, this freeware product looks like a good place to start.

Thanks PDX Flyer, I've taken the plunge and purchased PFPX so we'll see how we go.

Let us know how PFPX installation, setup, flight plan creation, program ease of use / accuracy / performance works for you.
