Interesting. A number of people seem to be a opting for bigger pictures over higher resolution. I think, for me, having used a 1940 x1200 res for the last 5 years, even though on a 24 inch monitor I could never opt for a bigger picture at 1080p now. That's a show stopper for me.

I guess it's all about what one is familiar with which makes us happy.

And then to upset all the theories, comes Ultra High Def TV @ 3840 x 2160 res.

I got the X-Star 27" 1440P off ebay for around $300-350AUD if I remember correctly. (the same as the Qnix Oscar mentioned, just in a slightly different case). Yes it's one of the Korean monitors but I have been extremely happy with my purchase and you can't beat the price. The higher resolution compared to 1080P is gorgeous!

 

If you are lucky and have good timing you can pick up the refurbed Dell monitors really cheaply through Dell directly. They normally have a listing on their webpage with available refurb stock.

Erich, I bought a 30" Dell Ultrasharp 2560x1600 and it is absolutely, bludgeoningly beautiful! I was very careful and bought a good refurbished one off Ebay. It was a look and collect purchase so I ensured I didn't end up with a dud. It cost me £400, a lot less than the £1200 it was being sold for on the high street. As for a performance hit, I went from a 1920x1200 res HP monitor and saw a minimal hit of about 12-15%. It was very small and nothing that I couldn't claw back simply by dropping the cloud draw distance and the AI notch a little. My advice would be to make sure you retain as high a resolution screen as possible :wink:

I don't think 30" monitors will ever become mainstream because they're too large for many people, including me. 30" monitors have existed for years and there's still a small amount of people buying them.

 

I'd much prefer if 1440p and 2160p resolutions became mainstream at sizes 24" and smaller. PPI is more important in my opinion.

2560x1600 at 30" gives a PPI of 100,63 , while my monitor which is 1920x1080 at 21."5 gives a PPI of 102,46. So what you're describing is not too exciting in my opinion. 2560x1440 at 24" gives a PPI of 122,38 which feels a lot smoother and sharper.

I would buy a 30" if it came in 16:9 format. Are there any?

I'm guessing when you say 30" you mean 2560 x 1600 pixel resolution?  I thought 30" 2560 x 1600 was already mainstream -- I guess the perception must be relative.

If you wait a year or two these will come down in price to about the same as 30" 2560 x 1600 monitors ($1000-$1500 range) which will drive existing 30" 2560 x 1600 monitors down into the $500 range.

 

Higher resolution in appropriate monitor sizes = less need for AA.  AA is a filter ... the less the need for filters the better the source image (in computer graphics).

I have been happily using my 24" @ 1920x1200 for years. But I think going from 24 to 30 now with the same relative distance from the monitor will be like going from the corner flea put cinema to IMAX

Be aware that 2560 x 1600 is 16:10 aspect and not 16:9 (2560 x 1440) ... so if you use FSX's WideViewAspect it may not be what you expect.
