OOM on long haul flights

Featured Replies

I find the comparisons in this thread helpful, but it also raises a question as to whether results reported are on a common basis. Specifically, for the long haulers reporting no or less OOM problems, are you using PMDG or other time compression to shorten the real time that your sim is running? I was having issues with KIAD-KPHX with flightbeam scenery at both ends and all other scenery off except for Global when flying it in real time. 100% of the real time flights cratered at touchdown in KPHX. Using PMDG's time compression VAS usage shrunk to the point where I would be able to plant it at KPHX without OOM about 3 out of 5 times. IMHO, if FSX VAS consumption is a memory leak, I suspect that real time, not compressed virtual time, is a key variable to consider when discussing OOMs. The suggestion above to use software to extract long range cruises to shorten real time bears this out.

Finished a flight VVNB - EDDF this early morning without OOM and no time compression. VAS usage during approach round about 3,2 GB, so everything ok.

Next weekend I will do the KLAX - EGLL flight once more, this time monitoring VAS.

I think EGLL with several other airports like EGSS, EGGW, EGKK and ORBX England activated is a real killer concerning VAS, but we will see.

and.....stay in your cockpit. Switching to outside view and spinning around the airplane will also increase vas usage. Perhaps these are the essential mb that are missing on approach later.

Edit: RAAS was deactivated.

I have posted results on this before and I do not agree. Yes, when I go outside my VAS increases by 100-150Mb. But when I go back to the VC after 5sec or so VAS reduces again by the same amount.

(That does not mean that the same is true for others)

Have you actually tried to do this while monitoring with process explorer?

Please do so, I would be interested in your results!

Ok, I will test this on my rig Rob.

The one thing I have noticed, if you are switching between fullscreen and windowed mode VAS decreases by 150 - 200 Mb.

Yes on my PC even a little more.....but it is only temporary. Like a minute or so. Then VAS kreeps up to where it was before. We discussed that a month or two ago as well and it was actually explained by someone why this temp drop in VAS is.

Looking fwd to your results.

Everyone seems to be jumping between 1024 and 4096 textures.

What about 2048?

Everyone seems to be jumping between 1024 and 4096 textures.

What about 2048?

I've always employed 1024 textures and have played around with 2048 in the past (with REX). Trying to use 4096 in the 32 bit FSX world is just asking for problems IMHO. Regards

I re-attempted this flight and I was able to complete with success and using auto time compression 4x. I got decent VAS usage around 2GB.

After couple of hours I attempted another flight KLAX -> EGLL. I restarted fsx and used same settings as before.

However after one hour into the flight my VAS kept growing and growing and growing until I got OOM error.

I am guessing North America can get very demanding on VAS.

I'm currently using 2048 and am happy with the graphic results. Taking off from payware airports I so far have been anywhere from 2.6 to 3.1 depending on the airport. Default airports I think I am around 2.5 or less. Last night I did a short flight from fsdt klax to flightbeam ksfo in the 737ngx. I took off at 3.1 dropped to 2.8 during cruise and landed around 3.5, so for a short flight those airports are heavy on vas usage. I did a pmdg 777 flight from default spim to flytampa tncm, which was about 6-7 hours long and I landed around 3.3 I think. I am using ftx global. A flight I would like to attempt in the 737ngx, which has caused me to go OOM (in the 777) before is fsdt kjfk to fsdt klax. All flights were done online and I do not use accelerate feature per virtual airline rules. I also would like to do kjfk to heathrow (uk2000) in the 777. I have no idea if I will be able to make this flight without going OOM, but maybe the vas will not be as bad if I am flying over the ocean.

Does anyone use orbx regions/airports? For example, I was thinking about getting central rockies/ jackson hole airport from orbx and I was wondering what type of vas hit these products would have on my pmdg flights?

Ok guys I am back on track with my next leg: KLAX -> EGLL.

I had to power off my computer and then after two hours started up flying this route. In addition, since I am using both FSDT KLAX and UK2000 EGLL and using the advice from this thread, I lowered my scenery settings to Medium low. I am glad to say that I am getting good performance with VAS usage 1.5 GB.

I don't think I have ever seen my vas usage anywhere near that low!

Hi guys!

I'm a little bit desperate and want to share my experience.

CLOUD_DRAW_DISTANCE=5
LOD_RADIUS=3.000000

All unneeded sceneries deactivated

FSX is still OOM'ing! (On flight EDDL-OMDB) Is that still normal?

My VAS is starting @2.9 in EDDL, after 6 hours of flight, the VAS is at 3.5/3.6  and you can imagine what happens when I continue my approach into Dubai...

I'm at a point now where I would prefer good graphics over OOM avoidance.

I will try to increase my settings again and will try the "restarting FSX"-method shortly before approaching. This seems to be more effective for me.

I have never tried DX10, cause I'm experiencing heavy performance loss when activated.

That is not the first time I see people OOM (faster) with FTX Global.

ORBX has a forum as well. Why dont you check if there is talk of high VAS load and VAS increase with this product on their Forums (or maybe others can confirm it here).

I opted for GEX with UTX as my base scenery in both the USA and Europe.

To be honest that seems to put quite a load on VAS as well!

I recently posted result from a flight across the Atlantic from USA to Europe.

VAS reduced quite a bit over the Atlantic (-700Mb) but upon reaching Europe it went up quickly again. About 150Mb per hour.

I reached Europe with 2.8Gb VAS.

Then it increased to about 3.0-3.1 Gb during cruise. Fly Tampa Vienna added some more and I landed with 3.3Gb VAS.

So I conclude that any scenery product you add to FSX...uses VAS.

The nicer it is, the more VAS it requires when you are over it.

And the problem with VAS is, that it does not reduce easily (unless when you fly over nothing like a big Ocean for hours it seems) because it becomes fragmented.

I had OOM yesterday after 2 hour flight (luckily at gate after landing)  :( EBBR - EPWA. I activated only Warsaw City (DDesign), EPWA X (freeware), HD Brussels (freeware) and EBBR AFCAD.

My CFG:Texture Max Load = 2048 (with REX cumulus textures 2048), LOD_RADIUS=6.5, Scenery Complexity=MAX, Water effects=Low 2.x., Scenery Resolution=60cm.

After reading this topic, I know that these settings are possibly too high, but I were only 2 hours in simulator, not 6, 8 or 15 like you :(

At departure I had VAS about 3GB.

Ps. I also have UTX, AS2012.

Hardware&OS: i52500k@4,3GHz, GTX560 1GB, 8GB RAM, Vista 64.
