OOM on long haul flights

Featured Replies

I had OOM yesterday after 2 hour flight (luckily at gate after landing)  :( EBBR - EPWA. I activated only Warsaw City (DDesign), EPWA X (freeware), HD Brussels (freeware) and EBBR AFCAD.

My CFG:Texture Max Load = 2048 (with REX cumulus textures 2048), LOD_RADIUS=6.5, Scenery Complexity=MAX, Water effects=Low 2.x., Scenery Resolution=60cm.

After reading this topic, I know that these settings are possibly too high, but I were only 2 hours in simulator, not 6, 8 or 15 like you :(

At departure I had VAS about 3GB.

Ps. I also have UTX, AS2012.

Hardware&OS: i52500k@4,3GHz, GTX560 1GB, 8GB RAM, Vista 64.

IMHO, having your LOD_RADIUS set at 6.5 with all those other add-ons is like waving a red blanket at the OOM bull and yelling "Toro, Toro!!"

That's the first thing I'd dial back.

I set LODRADIUS on 4.5 and T_M_L on 1024... and will be testing in next filght. We will see...

Edit. It is not good... I stay about 20 min in EBBR, changing views (no other action) ...and have 2,84 GB VAS :(

With DX10 AND TML at 4096,I get no OOM issues - talk about acronym hell?

As a test flight I ran the PMDG 777 from KLAX (FSDT) to FSFO (Flightbeam).

Guaranteed to get OOM's in DX9.

Nothing wrong with 2.8Gb.

I startup with about (or more) that at all addon airports.

Thereafter it depends on how much your VAS increases while flying.

Mine with UTX/GEX increases about 100-150Mb per hour, so after 10hr latest I should OOM. Unless VAS goes down again somewhere miraculously like over an ocean.

Just try a flght and see how long you can go.

But you are realy realy pushing it with all those HD addons!

I notice my vas drops off .2 to .3 after takeoff from addon airports once I get up near cruise even when its over land.

Are you using that utility to be able to run in dx10?

I bought Steve's fixer for other reasons,it's not mandatory, but worth the money if you want to fix addon airports nighttime textures.

If you only fly during the daytime, then you can just download Steves DX10 patches for free on avsim.com

(check the DX10 forums).

Hi Lukasz!

Indeed - nothing wrong with 2.84!

It just has to remain save below 4GB - even after some hours of flying - that's all that matters.

Even taking off above 3.0GB is fully okay - as all that matters is to remain well below 4GB!

I often depart at FSDT's great CYVR for instance and once there was lots of bad weather with nasty clouds around and all that and so i took off with something like 3.1GB.

I was flying to Aerosoft's PANC that day with ORBX's great Pacific North West, Northern- and Central Rocky Mountains, the Pacific Fjords, Southern Alaska and also FS Addon's great Tongass Fjords scenery enabled.

During all the flight my VAS remained well below 3.0gb, just around 2.8 GB or so and at the gate than at PANC - and after all was shut down and only after switching to the outside view my VAS was 3.6GB - but then again:

That was all at the end of the flight while there was literally no rise in VAS while inflight, keeping enough space for any destination airport scenery in the end!

I must add though that i use DX10 and this really helps alot, as i have never ever encountered an OOM since changing to DX10 - okay i repeat myself now - but to sum it up:

It does not matter what Your VAS load is when You jump into the cockpit - all that matters is to keep savely below 4GB!

Cheers, Christoph

Enjoy flying and happy landings.

Thank you for replies. I'll test my new settings and check VAS bahaviour... :)

Btw: I'm also going to purchase Steve's fix but I have only doubt of night scenery textures in variuos freeware sceneries (i.e NL2000 (airports and photo ground), EGKK UK2000 Free, etc) :/  ..so I have to think about it.

I tried DX10 with Steve's fix however there are still some airports that have faults, FlyTampa's Dubai International is one of them where it has big red blocks where the VASI lights should be, so I ended up giving up. Saying that, I have just done a flight from Dubai OMDB to Los Angeles KLAX in DX9. A 16 hour flight with no autoflight time compression. I had REX textures with AS2012 supplying the weather from a second PC, Aivlasoft EFB again running on a second PC but with the Dataprovider on my main PC. VoxATC running on main PC and survived the 16 hour flight with no OOMS until I touched down, that's when I ran out of memory.

+1

Just rechecked it all with FlyTampa's latest updates which are available at their website.

It is not very well structured there but You will find all You need at the FlyTampa forums indeed!

By the way(!!!):

Since the latest version of the DX10 fix (1.1.26 i think) there is NO(!) need to set DAWN_DUSK...=0 anymore!

The latest version of the fixer fixed it so to speak and FlyTampa sceneries (and many more!) really work like a charm now under DX10 with Steve's latest version of his DX10 fix (not all, but a lot - a real lot!)

Cheers, Christoph

Thanks for that. I had Google'd it but only found references about it, not fixes. Maybe it's time to try again.

What was the rush to releasing such an unfinish product at $90 !!???

These recurring bugs and issues pale out to insignificance the experience of enjoying PMDG 777

PMDG must get their act together and come up with fixes quickly...While it is a hubby to all of us, it is a hubby and a business to them.

I am not a satisfied customer.

After the help on this forum and after applying the DX10 fix from FlyTampa, I have to say that FSX runs better then ever. Not done a long haul flight yet but visuals look amazing. I now have light bloom on which before I could not due to low frame rates and the fact that the light used to shine through the cockpit textures.

Regis, I understand your dissatisfied, however all software that is release has some bugs that come through, look at the faults on Windows, FSX even Adobe flash player has had updates. I must admit that it is very annoying that there has been no update as to when the fixes will be repaired but PMDG are not alone in this. Unfortunately after a long development and an extended beta testing, when the 777 went on general release and tried on so many different configurations, more errors was found. Many of these now have workarounds, some or not major problems however it seems some people are having major problems. I have never dealt with PMDG support but I have heard that they are excellent. Might be a good idea to contact them as they know the working better then anybody.

I'm not sure if it's a problem with your system, but the bugs I have found with the 777 are annoying, but do not prevent me from flying. Compared with other software releases I would say the product is par for the course or better in terms of stability at the time of release. Again your system may be having issues with the product that mine is not and I can only speak from my own experience. I would like it to use less vas, but I'm not sure any updates will be able to fix that. I do wish they would communicate more about update status and release of the sdk.
