Why are flight simmers so rude to each other?

I've got another flightsim forum character archetype to add to the list--

 

"But whyyyyy???!?" These are the forum equivalent of your 5 year old child who wants that candy bar, and when you explain exactly why, in explicit detail why they cannot have the candy bar, their only response is to completely ignore everything you just laid out for them and say "But whyyyy???!?" For examples, check recent postings re: the new sim built on the FSX core engine vis a vis the most prolific producer of high fidelity airliners for FSX. 

 

The more extreme of the "But whyyyyy???!?" archetype has no qualms openly discussing ways to get that candy bar in less than honest ways.

I would ask for a 'once and for all' clarification regarding this matter from the Big Boss, and to get ALL of the MODS on the same page, because whether or not this subject allows discussion seems to be up to the particular Moderator that stumbles onto the discussion. Some say "forbidden topic", and others say "go ahead; it's OK".

 

Just looking for a clarification, that's all...

I notice there can be the occasional passive aggressive attitude in some posts. Sometimes, some comments can come across as a challenge, but due to the forum rules, such challenges cannot be answered without bringing the hammer on yourself. It's a bit hard to describe. While there is the old tenet of text lacking the subtlety and nuance of face to face communication, I'm sure many who have been involved in online forums since their inception (and news groups, mailing lists, BBS fora, etc.) can agree that you learn to see patterns that when studied over time, can reveal almost as much about about the attitude and intent behind these otherwise sterile figures on the screen as a facial tick or glint in the eye.

 

For example, how many of these archetypes have you seen here?

 

The bloated pontificator. This person really thinks highly of himself, and rarely will his or her posts be less than one or two paragraphs. Every post is not so much a sharing of information, but a decree.

 

The wishy-washy ADD sufferer. This person LOVES FSX the best of all. Next week, X-Plane is the best sim ever. On Thursday, it's Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X. that rules the roost. Sometimes it's cyclic. All the time, it's erratic.

 

The "I'm a real pilot, so I should know." Now, all due respect to real pilots out there, but there's one breed of poster among your ranks that seldom forgets to mention his credentials, and how they make him absolutely correct in everything he says.

 

The "I fly sims, so I am qualified to tell you you're wrong." This one is good at going after real pilots. Not seen as often on this forum, they usually lie in wait to offer their unsolicited advice to YouTube video posters. On the few times they go after the above category of real pilots, the ensuing furball can be amusing.

 

The fragile snowflake. This one can be especially annoying. Anything stated that is not exactly within the very narrow confines of his worldview are viewed as a personal attack. Whether it's a criticism against his pet sim, or a preference that's not his own in the ubiquitous Airbus vs. Boeing debate, this one can easily get torn to pieces, and will quickly resort to reporting posts that happen to contain something he has even the slightest disagreement with.

 

I know I'm basically aping the Forum Warriors thing, but flight sim forums have a few unique characters.

 

And regarding other, less civil forums, there is one I frequent that revolves around PC gaming that is pretty lax moderation. They'll cull anything obviously illegal or pornographic, but other than that, pretty much anything goes. Surprisingly, it's all but self-policing. When someone says something really uncalled for, it's rather cathartic to be able to craft a biting flame in response that would make a sailor blush, and thoroughly put the offender in their place. I've also learned from that forum that no one can wield the power of swearing quite like the artistry and craft of a Scotsman. Not suggesting that Avsim should adopt a lax behavioral standard, but some communities are more amenable to that kind of thing than others.

And I'll add a final category to your list:   "The Oracle of supreme intelligence".   These users like to take every opportunity to show their intellent and often appear to hold a fixed view that they are 'right' in every standpoint, in every discussion, on every subject.  They often have signature quotes that back up that trait.  They will often scathe other users and categorize them into pigeon holes, but in a supreme failing of emotional intelligence, fail to recognize their own place in a 'category'.

The popularity points system wasn't taken down because one person was against it. It was taken down because of the way people who were for it responded to the person who was against it.

 

By the way, I'm not a fan of JSkorna and his 20000+ posts weights less to me than a fart in space. still, I've never seen him referring to another community member as an "ahole"...
