Why are flight simmers so rude to each other?

Featured Replies

The most civil forum I know of is at subsim.com, the most flightsim forums comes next, then it gets worse and worse.

2) God, the guy who's on the forum and believes everyone should worship him. Maybe he's the author of an addon, or article and believes he can get away with being rude and has special privelages above other users.

I shall call this one the 'Mayor Rob Ford'.......He ain't going anywhere.

You don't remember the "cloaking issue" debate at subsim? There was some pretty heated discussion between Silent Hunter sub commanders and Destroyer Command surface captains. It got particularly nasty.

For those who weren't around in those days, or weren't interested in submarines at the time, there was a way for a submarine to ascend to just below periscope depth and disappear from the automatic sensors on the destroyers. If you manned the destroyer's sensors yourself, you'd still see the submarines. This is how the submarine commanders always did it. Your periscope would still be sticking out the water and was clearly visible from the bridge of the destroyer. But destroyer commanders considered this a cheat and complained mightily. It's amazingly easy to sink a submarine when you know exactly where he is and exactly what depth he's at, but you can't do it by pressing a single button, and this annoyed some people.

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;

I for one will not do a lot of research on a subject for many reasons. The biggest reason is that I like to hear the opinion of those who actually have experienced the problem.Don't forget, if it wasn't for people asking questions, there would be no forum.

Lol very true

Poor Canada, we dont get much world wide attention and when we do its with a crack smoking mayor lol

Flight simmers arent 'rude to each other'.  How dare you say that flight-simmers are 'rude to each other'.  They may be rude to their families' and workmates' etc.

...but 'rude to each other'?   Nope. No way. Never!

I have found over the decades that many folks simply do not know how to generate the "keywords" necessary to conduct a fruitful search. This was true even back in the ancient days when libraries had only card catalogs, making searching a required subject in "Library Science..."

So, simply telling anyone to use the forum Search function or to "Google" it is not the least bit helpful. Instead, at least provide a list of possible search terms, and if possible explain how you determined what those "keywords" should be.

Apparently actually being helpful is not nearly as satisfying for some. The thing is, its true, most people on this forum and others are extremely helpful, and it is a community.

Unfortunately, it only takes a few bad apples to taint the flavor of the entire pie.

If somebody new arrives in any forum and gets pounced on, that's their lasting impression of the forum, unless somebody quickly intervenes.

Some will simply run away. Some will just go into lurk mode, and some will get their backs up and fight back. (Flame on!) That's where the mods come in to break things up quick, and if they don't, or seem deliberately apathetic "Well that's just old Sam, you gotta get use to him: He don't mean no harm, I reckon'" Then the forum itself becomes complicit in the tone being set.

Short story:

There was another forum where the local Bull was in prime form, charging at people (especially noobs) left and right.

When a group of people (do gooders?) approached the Mods (and each other) to discuss the situation, the mod acknowledged the issue and said warnings would be sent if it got too out of hand but, added (frankly) that the offenders knowledge was too great a resource to lose....."

More back and forth ensued until the subject was dropped, the posters finally aware that effectively nothing was going to be done.

That's the prime aspect of a true Forum Bull above all others for me: That sense that the particular individual is tolerated above and beyond the call, apparently by those running the forum itself, even if the occasional token wrist slap is made.

Eventually the regulars make room for the person and their antics, aware that there is apparently nothing to do but live with it.

Stagnation ensues, as others shy away. (That probably cant happen to Avsim: its big enough that even a large bull can get lost in the herd, the only sign of his presence the occasional startled yelp as someone is gored)  :P

IMO If you/we want this thread to be kept alive.

I wouldn’t start pointing fingers to single persons, and BTW, it’s not only users.

They know who they are! (Or at least I hope so).

Wasn't this what created the need for Altavista, Yahoo and eventually Google? IMHO it is amazing how Google finds relevant content event with not-so-good key terms in the search string.....

Jim is sometimes a bit harsh, but always playing the devils advocate, and keeps the discussion going.

Dont let yourself get bitten by him, he has his purpose, altough i often have to bite on my tongue.
