December 18, 201312 yr Speaking of PMDG, in my honest opinion, the worst section of this entire forum is the PMDG section, and I really believe that while a good portion of what goes on here now is just "how it is" nowadays, I also feel that a good bit of the negativity nurtured in that forum tends to seep out a bit. I avoid that forum like the plague. Too many egoes in there, and such nastiness at times. Reminds me of the Apple and Android forums - everyone's an expert, yet know so little. Sent from my GT-N7100 using Tapatalk As I said, I avoid it. Saw an unread post on my Tab, where the resident band master was ripping some poor guy apart for not reading the manual. And what made it worse? It was a simple question and had already been answered, numerous times. Pathetic. Are you one of his groupies perhaps? Sent from my GT-N7100 using Tapatalk Agree. IMHO, PMDG have pushed the bar further than anyone else in the hobby, over the last 10 years. (In terms of both quality and innovation). They are an amazing group of talentedguys and we're lucky to have them in the hobby.... ..... But by jove, the PMDG forum is not a pleasant place to be. Exactly as you described it Brian, too many people who have just forgotten the fun element and have just started to take themselves far, far, too seriously. I call them the I.S.A.L.o.K (Intolerent Self Appointed Lords of Knowledge). But hey you know what, some weeks they get called out, and other weeks they are celebrated. Such are the 'cycles' that we go through in our colourful hobby!
December 18, 201312 yr Moderator I never visit the PMDG part of the forum, but I often see posts from PMDG die-hards below Youtube videos. Normally, they comment about every little thing the person is doing in the video, and why switch A should have been flicked before switch B, etc.. etc.. That's ok on "simulation" videos, but what gets up my goat is when you see it on real world aviation videos, such a real 737 cockpit view. I saw one PMDG guy criticising the first officer, even complaining about how he kept his hand on something and could have accidently flipped the switch. I'm pretty sure such people think they could just sit in a real 737/777 cockpit and perform a full flight. Simulation is "for me at least" meant to be fun, and a way of relaxing. Some people take it way way too seriously.

Enthusiasm is fine, but sometimes things can get a bit extreme, and I wonder occasionally if we all remember these are not real planes we are playing with, here. Every once in a while I get the impression that "Fun" is well on its way to becoming a dirty word. We are all connected..... To each other, biologically...... To the Earth, chemically...... Toggle switches have safety interlocks to prevent "accidental flipping..." which is of course not replicable in any non-hardware simulator. Fr. December 18, 201312 yr I can only deduce that the guy in the PMDG forums operates with the full endorsement of PMDG itself, albeit in an unofficial capacity. I guess the atmosphere in those forums is exactly what they want it to be.
December 18, 201312 yr Moderator Woehahaha!!, what video was that ? Unfortunately, it was a while back, a few months after the NGX 737 came out and I was learning how to use it. I remember cringing when reading it. Someone summed it up very nicely in a reply "Ha ha, those FSX simulator pilots thinking they know better".

I guess the atmosphere in those forums is exactly what they want it to be. You may be right but I'm not 100% convinced that is the case. The actual PMDG guys don't spend a lot of time in the forums (quite rightly, we'd all agree we'd rather have them making brilliant add-ons), so sometimes self appointment comes into the equation.

It's a shame too, because a few years ago when Ryan was still running their forums, for the most part, it was a much nicer place to be. Granted they all have a lot more on their plate now than they did back then, but the truth is that Ryan and Paul are the only two I have any respect for in that organization. At any rate, I didn't bring PMDG up to turn this thread in that direction, my apologies. Regards,Brian Doney
December 18, 201312 yr Woehahaha!!, what video was that ? Thats the most funny thing I heard in years here!. Actually, if you go to Youtube and choose almost any random cockpit video, you have a good chance of finding FSX'ers and PMDG'ers making sage comments. I sometimes wonder what the actual pilots think of that. We are all connected..... To each other, biologically...... To the Earth, chemically...... To the rest of the Universe atomically. December 18, 201312 yr Commercial Member Quite funny reading all these posts A topic about rudeness and intolerance to those 'casual simmers & newbies' yet we have a bunch of people laying into those that "choose" to treat today's high end addons as study sims and have a found a place to discuss the more technical aspect of these machines.... Just reeks of some weird internet insecurity to me.. But that's just my opinion. The PMDG forums can be a little brutal at times, but on the whole I find a good bunch of knowledgable people over there that I have come to respect. People should never be rude but we are human at the end of the day, I avoid telling people to RTFM and try to be as helpful as possible, but honestly it does help to read if you plan to venture into study sim territory blast off if your brand new NG then head straight to a forum asking 'WHY DOESNT THIS WORK' Most arguments on the PMDG forums tend to come down to some not realising that aviation is not rigid, even at the highest level of professionalism you will find many ways to achieve the same goal, this is why company's have operating procedures and don't blindly follow Mr Boeing or Airbus's recomendations. Anyway, don't want to go on... Just remember that the personas that you see on the Avsim forums are just a fraction of those peoples lives, so don't be so quick to judge. Personally I think flight simulation is evolving for the better, just that we as imperfect humans have to catch up and learn to accept we have differant goals when we fire up the sim. Six years ago I would never recommend Microsoft flight simualtor to anyone studying for a type rating, that's most definitely changed now. If you want to fly inverted under the Golden Gate Bridge in your PJ's drinking tequila (I've done that!) more power to you, if you want to fly a mid level sim with awesome immersion, that's great. And if studying the complex hydraulic system and having heated debates with your fellow simmers is your thing then so be it. Rob Prest
December 18, 201312 yr I was pretty sure they didn't exist to begin with, but to be sure I went back a few pages to find: "a bunch of people laying into those that "choose" to treat today's high end addons as study sims and have a found a place to discuss the more technical aspect of these machines" ...and didn't find any. Care to clarify for the sake of discussion ? Regards,Brian Doney
