December 20, 201312 yr #1- "T7 COG off by 2% from Topcat, can't figure out why" #2- "Bumping this topic" #3- "I would have asked this in the PMDG forum but am restricted until I have 5 posts" #4- "Great to be a member of Avsim" #5- "Finally with this post I can get to where I want to go" Thinking a bit further on this though it does present a technical issue, in that: If access to the commercial forums shouldn't be restricted. Then those that do not understand/don't care about/are too impatient to wait might just start posting general questions to those sections instead, driving the commercial devs mad. Although they could look at it as potential revenue generator  It may well turn out that it wouldn't be practical to implement. I do wonder though, is there any real evidence that this is a problem ? Specifically retention, I mean ? You should be able to get at least a rough number on that. I know it's been talked about a lot, and I know that if certain parts of AVSIM were 10 years ago what they are today it might have affected my stay here, but I'm looking at that from a very different perspective than a new member would. Are there any actual numbers to go on ? Regards,Brian Doney
December 20, 201312 yr I know I certainly lurked for years before joining, because, as another person said, the dedicated simmers kind of have/had a "reputation" I delayed my first Orbx purchase for over a year and was very shy indeed on their forums after lurking and seeing some very snappy answers. That doesn't even mention one of my 1st Snave encounters when I asked about the possibility of the exact type of compatibility forum that quite a bit later Orbx implemented so successfully, and got my head handed to me for blithering about such an impossible thing that could obviously never be done....... People do indeed lurk, or join and lurk for long periods I believe, not wanting the hassle and conflict of getting stomped by somebody in a bad mood. This hobby is for enjoyment (dirty word) for a lot of us, and for many, unpleasant internet encounters with random strangers (who need to get over themselves) over digital planes are beyond the pale. I might have indeed joined earlier if there was a "safe" zone where the helpful could reach me first before others did. We are all connected..... To each other, biologically...... AVSIM did change though.. Hence I eventually signed up. The MS Flight forum seemed to be a headway into eliminating pointless bullying and being blatantly belligerent to people. It wasn't an overnight turn around but Tom did clean up things considerably. I wasn't going to go here but I'll trim the fat off my opinion as the rest is probably a controversial view on this but.. My question is.. Where is the line drawn between talking to someone like a 5 year old, and talking to someone like an adult? December 20, 201312 yr Who is aware of what has happened to the Captain Sim forums, after CS decided to quarantine newbies? What happened to AVSIM
December 20, 201312 yr I understand what you're getting at but: 1) That's a commercial vendor, so it's not quite the same. 2) If left open, the general community really would have likely burned it to the ground by now  Regards,Brian Doney
December 20, 201312 yr I understand what you're getting at but: 1) That's a commercial vendor, so it's not quite the same. They do have general ("hangar talk") sections. 2) If left open, the general community really would have likely burned it to the ground by now  I think I was one of those after release of v1.0 of their B777! I'm just fighting to increase my post count to 4k, so I will get around the AVSIM quarantine!!! :LMAO: What happened to AVSIM
December 20, 201312 yr Author I'm just fighting to increase my post count to 4k, so I will get around the AVSIM quarantine!!! Don't get too comfortable.. There is this thing called "specific targeting"... :Skull:

Where is the line drawn between talking to someone like a 5 year old, and talking to someone like an adult? I've seen people get upset or offended over stuff I look at, read 10 times and and say to myself "Really? That upset you?".. Sometimes its context, as well. I know that as a newb, my tail was all but wagging frantically on my first few posts. (Aerosoft) I was excited, and eager, and curious, but there are many things about Flight simming that are just flat out contrary to the way commerce is done on the rest of the internet. (product updates, for instance.) Probably one of my first questions began with "Why do....." and went from there, whereupon I was told crisply that as a newb, I had no standing to be questioning my betters yet. (Snave) Might even have been true in some sense, and said in another way, might have been unobjectionable. In its context however, I felt like I had gotten a rolled up newspaper to the nose, and was a bit bewildered, trending towards upset. Was this how this forum treated people? Maybe I had better go someplace else....... It really can be just that quick and simple, the decision for a newb to stay, go or lurk forever. Sensitive? Maybe, but there are plenty of other places that I am sure would be glad to see me and my money. No need to deal with rude people. At all. I am glad I stayed. Mathijs is a great guy. December 20, 201312 yr An introduction to simming by Snave is a trial by fire if there ever was one, so I would have to say your experience might not be typical. Glad you survived. December 20, 201312 yr I say give the newbs a spot. I don't suspect the place will be overrun, and newbs might have pride issues with being identified as such (Maybe new arrivals forum" but it certainly cant hurt to make the attempt. Plus it gives the helpful someplace to look for new posts, and the grouchy a place to avoid.. Come to think of it, name it like FSX does. I'm new! I'm Back! Etc.......... We are all connected..... And we have ALLL SEEN IT A MILLION TIMES Someone asks a question Someone answers it Then someone answers that persons answer with what they feel is the right answer 5 pages of everyones opinion later the person who asked the question is now more confused. December 20, 201312 yr Commercial Member I'm not trying to be negative, and I completely agree this bullying is a problem, but I don't understand how anyone thinks a newcomers forum will do anything but simply add another forum, I mean what stops the "bulls" from just moving over to the newcomers forum to continue badgering the newbs just like any other forum?
