Switching to P3D and saying goodbye to FSX for good

Featured Replies

Please stop making generalized comments about gamers.  Many of us here enjoy games just as much as we do flightsims. Personally, I find some of your comments insulting.

You make it sound like being a flight simmer places you above us lowly gamers.  like you are part of the elite and we are the lower class.  And most of your points are either totally untrue, or very exaggerated.  There are only a handful of really good PC games made each year, and I own a number of PC games that are older than FSX that I still use. And there are many Flightsimmers who use more than one flightsim. I currently have 4 installed on my PC.

OK, I'm done.

Hi,

Don't know where your getting that I'm insulting ANY GAMER, re-read my post. I talk about cost and choices, I think your reading your own conclusions in my text that simply DOESN'T EXIST.

Using a simulator or playing a game, they both have their merits. There is NOTHING WRONG with being a gamer. Heck, I'M A  52 YEAR OLD GAMER MYSELF when not on my flight sim computer, I use the WII on a regular basis. I've been a gamer as well as a simmer since the IBM 8088 computer. That's BEFORE the internet.

People really need to get over being insulted being called a Simmer / Gamer. they are two different words THAT's ALL... One infers one uses a simulator for a particular purpose and the other infers someone playing a game. There is NOTHING Derogatory and/or insulting in my use of either word.

Here is one meaning of the word gamer: somebody who regularly plays computer or video games or role-play games... What's wrong with that?...

If anything, I should be insulted being told that gamers are more discerning than I am as a simmer.

To the original poster, the move to P3D is the best move I've made in regards to Flight Simulation, I do not believe you will be disappointed in making the move as well.

I don't think you're intentionally insulting 'gamers' but some of your comments could be misconstrued as elitist, and 'simming' is somehow a more worthy a pursuit than 'gaming' [which it is not] but I don't think that is what you mean, or I hope not. I get that it is possible to pour more money into FSX/P3D/XP than say Skyrim or most other single games, but suggesting those who don't 'sim' and therefore 'game' consider their lot good enough is ridiculous... they do feel the same way [even with all that choice], and will pour vast resources into making their games look and perform as good as possible... maybe more so, as games push the tech boundaries far more than any sim to date... sims bog down for different reasons, but the cutting edge they are NOT.

Not that its a stupid competition either, the fact is, there are those in any field of gaming/simming [or music, film, graphics etc. etc.] that are prepared to pour any amount of cash into their hobby, to make it better, if they have the resources. I'm not one of those, and make do on all counts, as I have more urgent priorities, and therefore less disposable cash (sadly)

And lets be honest, unless you are using your chosen flight sim for genuine training purposes, most of us (me included) are in reality 'gaming/pretending/being entertained' by our chosen flight sim, and are no different to those playing Skyrim/Battlefield or whatever other game you care to name.

Er, why?... many are for sure.

Anyway, that is enough of this

Hi,

I agree, disposable cash is key in BOTH sim and game platforms, but they are two different things. One has nothing to do with the other. One is not better than the other, they are just different. I know my profile says I've been here 10 years plus, but I'm here longer than that.

I do not hold nor consider myself above anyone (this includes the real world as well as the internet) as been suggested. Search as hard as you like, you will not find ONE POST (and you can go back all 10+ years if you like) by me making any statement that simming or simmers are better than gaming or gamers. Nor do I put simmers above gamers and/or vice-versa, because its simply not true, they are different, that's all.

Arwen, I'm not sure what has got you so hot under the collar. But if you misinterpreted my text and took it as insulting, I can assure you, it was not typed nor meant in that fashion.

Am I a  Sim/Gamer? or a Game/Simmer? or......

Anyone remember the sim/game "Silent Service" or was it a game/sim

I'm so confused

It's how you use the sim, use it as a game then it's a game and vice verse.

P3d is looking gorgeous no doubt, let it mature like X plane 10 and she will be wonderful.

someone mentioned in this thread (don't recollect the user) that he / she has spent 6,000 USD on the comp , how many can afford that just on a comp is just my guess.

Everyone here is going to laugh out at me if I tell you what I am using as a rudder a logitech attack 3  why because I cannot afford those expensive rudder pedals. Why am I sticking to an AMD (though she is great in FSX performance)  system because I can not afford the Intel platforms. So it all depends on the budget of the user.  Ah i would have spent that 6000 USD on a real flight training.

I love flying , if only not a failure in Maths I would have been flying those Migs and Sukhoi 30 MKI.

Anyway this thread has been pushed on a wrong track. Lets just stick to the topic.

P3d is going to be great just minus a few things.

I would never laugh at someone who sticks with his hobby no matter what and finds a way to get things done on a low budget.  :good: In fact, you deserve admiration for your determination.

Hi,

Many, many, many years ago, I actually took apart cheap joysticks in an attempt to build my own homemade yoke and rudder pedals. Well, that didn't work out so well. I think everyone.... at one time or another did what they had to (whether it worked or not), to get the most out of their sim. Yeah, today I have money to spend on my equipment, but it wasn't always like this.

I don't think you would find any individual that would make fun of your attempts to better your experience.

Ironmaiden - I concur with Mike & Jeroen - Sure I can afford a $6k system NOW, in fact I have a dedicated FSX and another dedicated P3D system in addition to 3 other computers. But there was a time when, like Mike, I was taking apart old hardware to build my own controls because I didn't have the $$. Would have been easy to give up. Main thing is - are you enjoying what you are doing? Enjoy what you HAVE rather than worry about what you have NOT. And I can GUARANTEE that there is some simmer out there who would love to have your system.

Hi Mike,

I actually did not mean making fun in the literal sense it was just a generalized statement you know what i mean.

Firstly I have been simming since many years and always had a single joystick at that moment with a throttle and did leave simming for quite sometime and back again to it , I had always looked for a pedal but procuring those in India are pretty difficult and they do turn out expensive and once you have a family life than more the difficulty of saving that much for your hobby.

Yes I am saving firstly to either get P3d or X plane 10 and for a R7 260x (GPU) and then the shall be my pedals. :Money Eyes:

Just a simple thing about everybody not being able to afford everything for there hobby so a compromise is still ok. :P

Hi,

I didn't take your comment as making fun or in a bad way... I hope one day you will succeed in having the sim of your dreams.

Honestly I am enjoying simming even those hand based pedals  , ooohhh infact I did make a throttle when I had the Creative audigy card which had the gameport and have used the potentiometer on it but that card blew  :) , including switches made for lights on the second keyboard but that was back then , hmmm thinking of making those switches again sounds like fun.

I would love to have a whole pit sitting in my room.

Ironmaiden - I am impressed with your attitude. I would like to send you a set of CH Rudder pedals - no cost - as a gift - no strings. If you accept, I will order them and have them shipped to you from Amazon.

PM me with a shipping address if you accept - again - no strings - just a gift from one simmer to another.
