An Interesting Future for Outerra

Recommended Posts

Someone tell the developers what framerate drop is. They don`t seem to get it!

Someone tell the potential customers also when they ask why, why, why can't this be included.

The google earth city looks amazing, but that is just it, it is made for a visual representation, not as a game where you rely of many other factors to influence your movement thruout the game engine. It's akin to users throwing tons of sketchup models into FSX, they are not made for that and 99% of them are way to heavy to be used as scenery objects.

I would gather that the main reason Outerra runs as well as it does now, down to the blades of grass is the use of procedural shaders and not memory hogging textures.

Everything visual comes at a price.

Its about time somebody tried a newer approach.

Yep indeed:

WOW!, for #394!

Thanks a lot Devon for pointing us to these grand shots!

Other than that i must admit that the Outerra "city-video" in #386 looks fantastic as well! Great!

... just trying to imagine that now in a flightsim - ... now what a grand step forward in regards to greater immersion that would be compared to what we have available nowadays in FSX, P3D or X-Plane.

And before any misunderstandings occure:

I am not being negative about these three platforms here as all of them are what they are and sure have to offer a real lot for us flightsimmers - especially if some dedicated 3rd party devs get their hands on them to enhance them!

But as the mentioned video from Outerra here clearly proofs IMHO:

Much, much more could already be achieved nowadays if a proper engine was used in the background ... and if something "like that" would become standard in regards to shaping cities in a potential future Outerra-Flightsim, then all i can say is:

WOW!

That would be quite amazing for sure!

wise words- and well said!  we know what we like when we see it - and then we constantly say I WANT. to make it happen though, that's another cup of tea altogether.  Given everything we ask of our sims, including instrument navigation, complex airplanes and very complex glass cockpits - realtime weather including winds, clouds and rain (and more)...it's stunning what we are seeing on screen today!

Many pilots fly single PC setup and single monitor... and that is asking a LOT from the user's pc, which can execute and display output x number of times per second... the more 'burden' or layers of code you add, and let's face it, Outerra alone is quite a load in and of itself...

It becomes unmanageable... frames suffer...

I know this particular forum is focused primarily on the Flight Sim aspects of Outerra, but its good to be reminded from time to time that the engine shows the potential for so many other things as well. Here are some views from air, sea and land, using the Oculus rift.

If you are a mutant like me, you can even cross your eyes slightly and watch the video in 3D.  B)

Good luck with that! Enjoy!

EDIT: By the way, video has no sound.

Good luck with that! Enjoy!

Hi Devon,

With every screen shot and video that is posted, I am constantly amazed / impressed with the work being done and the potential being demonstrated!

Now, could I ask you if you would please offer some suggestions on how I might get my eyes to uncross? I keep running into things here around the house and my wife thinks I've been drinking again!

Thank you for keeping us updated on Outerra and the beautiful media material you share.

Regards,

These reply's do bring up a question, though. I've never had a problem seeing any type of 3D image since I was small, and now it comes to me so naturally I barely even have to think about it. But I understand for some it can actually be difficult. Not to derail the thread, but just from curiosity, how many of you have problems making the pictures below convert in your mind to 3D?
