An Interesting Future for Outerra

Featured Replies

These reply's do bring up a question, though. I've never had a problem seeing any type of 3D image since I was small, and now it comes to me so naturally I barely even have to think about it. But I understand for some it can actually be difficult. Not to derail the thread, but just from curiosity, how many of you can't see the images below without a lot of effort?

Oh not that stuff! I was only able to see these recently. I didn`t expect such an effect though!

  • Well, Outerra has had only one variety of flora (pines) for quite some time, but have little birdies seen the future?

  • I think of it this way: there are two approaches to making a sim, particularly a flight sim. One is you make the planes and the things that go with the planes, and paste a somewhat satisfactory sketch

LOL! To me, it pops out so sharply its almost shocking! (and its great training for watching Oculus rift videos on YouTube without actually having one)

I think Outerra and the Oculus are going to be best of friends.

Maybe this will help!!

What impresses me more than the plane is the 3d snowdrift on the right of the tail. Is that weather generated or a scenery created and applied object? Either way, I like it.

Re crossed eyes: I tried a sharp blow to my left temple - I slewed violently to the right and found myself in the prone position. After a brief period of recovery I tried the right temple and slewed violently to the left again finding myself prone on the floor. Neither remedied my condition. Not being one to give up, I tried a sharp blow to the back of my head, but, yet again I slewed violently forward and found myself once again in a prone position (with a very sore nose). I am debating the merits of a sharp blow to the forehead considering that I now not only have crossed eyes, I am also suffering from blurred vision, plus three large bumps on my head. I went to the refrigerator for some ice but I ran into them. That resolved the forehead debate. Now I have four bumps.

Enough of the silly stuff, . . . . . . thanks again Devon!

For some reason picture #2 is the only one that doesn't work for me, at least not as well defined as the others.

Regards,

The snow is applied automatically if the area is snowy!

I can get the images after a second or two so I tried the video which split into 3 for me, with the center one looking a bit kinda 3D just too small for a great effect to be seen. Is that how others perceive it out of curiosity?

Yes. Thats how it works.

Can we stop displacing our eyes now?  I`m gatting kinda wonky!

Afaik you can't see the 3D movie as it is intended when you use the crosseyed technique because then your left eye will see the right picture and the right eye the left picture... Years ago I knew how to look at stereo stuff like that properly (with the left eye seeing the left picture etc.) but I forgot how I got that done... My eyes aren't as good as they used to be either so that doesn't help. ^_^

Its one of the advantages to the way Outera does things. Snow cover is an easily modifiable parameter in the Outerra Cfg. Post #372 went into more detail.

The image appears to split into three, with the center image being in stereo. Just ignore the images at the left and right and concentrate on the center.

UPDATE:

Development version with biome colors and vegetation density support.
As usual, new features are available in the full version initially, later will get into the free demo version as well.

Changes:
Version 0.8.2.4711 (29 Jun 2014)

  • vehicles can be placed as static objects in the builder (see the help tab), converted to live vehicles on enter
  • updated default scenery to include parked vehicles (full install only)
  • reenabled XP and Vista support
  • terrain aspect affecting tree probability (north/south slopes)
  • customizable forest threshold value
  • adjusted forest parameters, default tree quality metrics increased to avoid popping
  • script: get_camera_mode returns -1 in case no camera is bound to object
  • script: velocity method for getting speed vectors in vehicle physics
  • fixed solid explosion particle colors
  • fixed HUD elevation/distance values sometimes not hiding after HUD closing
  • fixed ufo speed lock (end key)
  • fixed google minimap transparency
  • fixed object culling in map mode (ctrl+shift+G/M)
  • added new aiming animation with correct range a lot of fixes to cam ctrls, limited pitch angle in fps and tps modes
  • default video compression reverted back to faster mode
  • fixed HOTAS detection, workaround for raw axes
  • fixed Rift mode being turned off after F2 location jumps

And boy, thats alotta' trees!!

Wow! How did I miss those? They look photorealistic!

Which is pretty much the whole point, right there. The closest we can get to what Outerra might potentially become is photo-scenery, and photo-scenery for the whole planet is of course nearly impossible due to storage issues......

Outerra however, might be able to get us pretty close to that, from orbit down to blades of grass. (and even the best photo-scenery fails when you get that low.......)

its all about potential.

I agree, with Outerra it's possible to get a more accurate representation of an area compared to the landclass system in FSX/P3D, and without the photoscenery which shows its limits quickly the lower you get.

But I think that the lighting and and the rendering of the atmosphere also really contribute to the photorealistic feel of those screenshost, and FSX/P3D kind of fail with those (future Prepar3D versions can change that though).

I keep Imagining Outerra with accurate waterways and clouds, and thinking I could probably be pretty happy exploring that for quite some time, while the rest is being developed.
