April 27, 201412 yr Hi just need some advice on my specs am running! I just followed kostas guide and getting excellent results with FSX and my 737 NGX it has certainly removed some of my demons i was having since setting up my fsx and receiving my brand new pc build. What it is will i turn HT off if am already got my cpu overclocked or can i just leave it on? I'm running infinity mask at 84 as i have 8 columns in my CPU usage in task manager or will i turn off HT and run infinity mask at 14 as instructed in kostas guide. Just need this cleared up thanks Just to let you guys know am all new to all this and trying to understand all this tech stuff! April 27, 201412 yr I have the same spec as you Vernon and have set mine at 254, 7 cores for fsx and one for other task, works well . Bob Ps thats with ht on
April 27, 201412 yr Author Ok 254 in infinity mask then? Will try that tonight bob So is that HT on then mate? Vernon Howells
April 27, 201412 yr My understanding s that FSX will run better with HT turned off and an affinitymask of 14. Others may wish to confirm or deny. April 27, 201412 yr Ok 254 in infinity mask then? Will try that tonight bob So is that HT on then mate? Yes. 254 instructs FSX to use these cores: 11111110 - so cores 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 will be used by FSX, and core 0 is reserved for the System An AffinityMask of 252 results in the following: 11111100 - cores 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 for FSX, and cores 1 and 0 for the System Regarding the benefits of HT on or off, I've used each for long periods of time (months) and I've seen absolutely no difference in FSX performance. I get the same fps and "smoothness" factor with both settings. - Jev McKee, AVSIM member since 2006. April 27, 201412 yr Author At the moment i have set it at 84 with 8 columns in the CPU usage in task manager? Does this mean HT is on? How do i know HT is running or not? Vernon Howells
April 27, 201412 yr My understanding s that FSX will run better with HT turned off and an affinitymask of 14. Others may wish to confirm or deny. IAN My understanding is that with overclocking, turning HT off will lower the temps, thus one are able to overclock higher.
April 27, 201412 yr Author My understanding is that with overclocking, turning HT off will lower the temps, thus one are able to overclock higher. Right so i should turn my HT off then buddy and set 14 infinity mask? Vernon Howells
April 27, 201412 yr At the moment i have set it at 84 with 8 columns in the CPU usage in task manager? Does this mean HT is on? How do i know HT is running or not? If you see 8 columns in Task Manager, then HT is on. An AM of 84 = 01010100, which means FSX is using cores 6, 4, 2. Right so i should turn my HT off then buddy and set 14 infinity mask? Why? Unless you're having problems with temperatures, there's no need. Another consideration is that if your OC was done with HT on, turning it off might cause some instability with the OC. But, this is a topic a bit beyond my pay grade, so maybe someone more knowledgeable can offer advice. - Jev McKee, AVSIM member since 2006. April 27, 201412 yr 84 (or 168) with HT on is the same as 14 with HT off: Core 0 for FSX fibers, Core 1 for FSX's main scheduler and cores 2 & 3 for texture loading. If you want to try two texture threads per core with HT on, then you should use 248 or 244
April 27, 201412 yr Why not try both then you can decide which is better for your needs. I found that with HT on I was getting the same results as with HT off so now I leave HT on. April 27, 201412 yr I'm open to correction here but I don't think FSX is optimised to take advantage of hyperthreading at all. If you use affinity 14 you'll just use your four physical cores which is all that can be used anyway as far as I know. 84 would, I think, have no real effect.
April 27, 201412 yr Author Ok daz i'll stick with 84 and HT on all this means nothing to me lol i'm trying to learn the 737 ngx not a computer but i suppose having a good general understanding helps which i'm trying Vernon Howells
