After all these years, finally picked up a Saitek Trim wheel

Featured Replies

Just picked this up for $50 from Fry's electronics in my local area.  Not sure why I waited so long ... what a huge difference it makes over using a lever axis.  The precision with the trim wheel is so much more precise, amazing!

Highly recommend for those who may not already have one.

Cheers, Rob.

Good grief! You need major help with wire organization! <grin>

Anyone ever tell you you look somewhat like Dale Jr.?

OMG! Sorry! Don't think you're a left turn-only type of guy!

I know, it's embarrassing!

I have considered getting that for some time my self.   Does it seem to work properly with P3D?

Out of the box, no issues at all ... I didn't install any of the Saitek drivers, just plug in and use.  The precision is much finer, no more micro movements like I had to do with my prior lever (the one to the left of Prop 1 in my picture used to be my Trim lever).

Rob,

That TQ just to the right of the Saitek one, could you please tell me what it is. Looks very solidly built and love that it has reverser levers(that's what they look like anyway), which have been missing from my sim experience for quite a while now. Might have to pick one up if you would recommend it.

Thanks,

That is the GoFlight TQ6 ... I'm not sure I would use the term "solid" (in feel anyway) but I've had NO issues with it.  Thrust reversers work well.

My understanding is that it's not like a mouse wheel, but will turn only a certain amount each way.  I'm guessing this means the wheel indicates an absolute position?

Say the wheel is full up, and the autopilot has trimmed full down.  Does that mean once you move the wheel a tiny bit (after ap off) the plane goes from full down trim to full up?

(Typical autopilot/trim wheel problems)

I'd be curious to hear what you think, thanks!

Yep - got the same one a few years ago. It's great.

timers15 - if I understand the question - I think the wheel position is re-initialized when it starts up, so it's "centered".  It spins a LOT (lots of rotations), so I've never had to go seeking where center was.

However, my understanding is that it has some issues with various autopilot scenarios. I don't know what they are, though, as I'm only starting to use autopilot a little bit now.

cheers

Andrew

Rearranged my FS controls/modules ... means less turning of my head to hit buttons, turn knobs, and look at LEDs ... this is a good thing when one uses TrackIR.  It also needed to be easy to move out of the way (<1 minute) for when I'm doing work that pays the bills.

Yes I know, the wiring is still a mess ... I'll sort that out another day.

Hi Rob,

Have you tried this with the following add ons by any chance :

PMDG NGX & 777

Airbus X Extended

Majestic Dash 8 Q400

I have been thinning about one of these for a while and for some reason keep shying away from purchasing

Love the P3D Youtube vids by the way, been thinking of dabbling there too !!

Regards

Richard

I'll be picking a trim wheel soon too. Pretty tired of using the toggle button on my Saitek yoke.

Btw, would you mind telling me where you got that desk!

Got it many many years ago (over 10) ... I wanna say IKEA but it could have been Office Depot.

Just be aware that the Trim seems to go to sleep on some aircraft ... you have to move the wheel a little to get it to register in the aircraft (at least in P3DV2.2 anyway) then it'll self center and be available for use ... fortunately it stays awake once found so you only need to do it at flight start.

Trim has very very fine movements (this is good) ... so no drastic changes when you move it up or down ... makes it very easy to set a 0 RoC.

Cheers, Rob.

I'm just getting into flight sims, loving it so far.  I went with the saitek non cesna yoke, I have a few switch buttons on it.  I use the top left buttons for trim up and trim down but I find I have to adjust it quite a bit throughout a flight.....I think I'd almost be too lazy to keep taking my hand away and using a wheel to trim.

On the other hand, I am a total newb and maybe I'm doing something wrong having to use trim so much.  I find i rather just use the yoke and correct it to the position I want, then hold it.  Trimming it sometimes.

Once I get out of total newb status, I will consider one of these, its only 50 bucks anyways.  Your setup looks wicked, some cable management yes but cool gear.
