How to enjoy FSX

Featured Replies

I've been using FSx for some years now and lately I've lost interest in it. The whole point of the simulation is to fly from one point to another and land it. I guess the only joy for me is taking off, descent and approach. I really appreciate the realism that is invested in this software as but I've just lost interest because it doesn't seem interesting anymore. I've been flying PMDG's 737 NGX and it is indeed beautifully crafted, but it just doesn't seem fun anymore.

Just trying to see if I'm the only one experiencing this and if there are any suggestions in how I can make it fun to fly again.

There's a whole big world out there that doesn't even need electricity to run, it kept our ancestors entertained for 30,000 years, try it. The graphics are b*tchin', DirectX 24 or so I think, realism like you've never seen in-game, killer anti-aliasing, the frame rates rock, AromaFlow even...

When you come back the sim will be fun again!

I chase VATSIM events with point-to-point ATC & record them for youtube.

I have no idea how, but apparently some people actually find the videos interesting and comment on them.

This makes even the weekly Sydney-Melbourne Melbourne-Sydney flight interesting to me, because it has a long 2+ year record of consistently having good quality (real person) air traffic controllers online, during my time zone when I'm awake and not at work.

Of course I do sometimes try to go to other area's flyins too, when I can get to them.

And for the "big" events, like WorldFlight, Cross the Pond, etc, I will apply for leave from work (well in advance). It's all about the planning.

And finally, since you fly the PMDG 737:

Once installed, spawn up the PMDG 737-800 at SBSP and set up the following flightplan:

DORLU W53 UGRAD

SBSP Charts:

PUKRA1B (rwy17R)

PUKRA1B (Rwy 35L)

SBRJ Charts:

UGRAD1A arrival VUREP transition

Runway 20L RNAV/RNP

Runway 02R NAV RNP W approach

SBRJ Ground chart. < CHECK OUT THAT RUNWAY LENGTH!

Expect to cruise at or under FL250.

The 02R approach is amazing.

Here's some (real) videos of the Approach into SBRJ runway 02R

1. If you want a challenge maybe try using fsrecorder. Record a flight and then play it back as traffic. You can do follow the leader or practice formation flying. Heck you can do this multiple times and be your own flying team!

2. Try some bush flying. Try and find unusual and challenging places to land. I managed to put the A2A cub on some crazy mountaintops. The stock cub is fun too.

3. I like to crank up the weather and lower the visibility and do some really exciting ILS approaches.

4. Pretend to be a different kind of pilot. Sometimes I will pretend I am piloting a parachute jump plane. I will add the passengers and try to get to 12500 feet as quickly as possible then position the plane above the airport, I will then remove the passengers and get back down as quickly as possible (sometimes spinning the airplane down) only to do it again. How many can you do in an hour? Ever try crop dusting? Way harder than you think. Use the Extra 300 and simulate using smoke. If you like it, there are crop dusters out there you can purchase.

5. Helicopters are a challenge.

6. Practice emergencies. Add some failures and see how you do.

7. Try getting from point a to point b with just enough fuel. Maybe add some headwinds and see if you can make it. Deal with it if you don't.

8. Try flying through the blimp hangars at Moffett field in northern California. There are two of them and you can do a circle race through both of them.

9. Try racing at Reno.

10. Fly around the world. Maybe with one airplane. Maybe using different airplanes for each of the legs. The world is your oyster.

Hope that helps in some way.

GA flying with ORBX in the Northwest.  GA flying with ORBX in the Rockies.  GA flying with ORBX anywhere!  FSX stays fresh.  Airliner flying is only good when you take off and land IMHO.

I have been at Flight Sim since 1982 and have always had breaks at time and go back to it. Nothing wrong with that.

I am currently on a break that has lasted about a year but will bet back to it later this winter

My longest break was from 2006 to 2009. I even bought FSX when it first came out but didn't install it or use it for 3 years. Things in my life were too busy at that time so it sat and collected dust. When I did finally install it I used it a lot over three years but now it is on the back burner for a little bit.

When you do get back to it you do a little purchasing to upgrade and make it all exciting again. I still haven't got the PMDG 777 or the Majestic Dash-8 so that is what I will get when I do get back into it, as well as the global ORBX packages out there now.

It will make it all the more exciting when I do.

MusicalAviator - quick question on your Q400 video above.  At 31.04 the sim pauses, its not an FSX pause but a pause of the Q400.  This happens in mine as well and I can't figure out if this is a problem with my computer/sim/setup or just the nature of the beast with the Q400 as the aircraft is simulated completely outside of FSX and its the timer catching up.  I have asked the question on the Majestic forum but never got any answer.  Any ideas? (and sorry to the OP for taking this off topic).

FSX will have a freeze of a few frames, but the Majestic continues to run. Then it notices that it's position is too far ahead of itself (because FSX stopped for a second) so it will "slow down" to a stop, and then pick back up so that it can catch up to where it ('s navigation system) believes it to be. It's a mix of FSX micro-freezes and the way Majestic handles it (due to the FDE being outside the sim). Effectivley FSX froze for a second, which throws Majestic's position out a little, and then it has to adjust itself by emulating the freeze and/or slowing the visual position (sim) to catch up and match location.

Maybe flying tubeliners isn't your thing. Try bush flying or GA flying as said above with some beautiful scenery. For me, I enjoy doing multiple sectors in a day and sticking to one aircraft and one airline. Currently I've stopped simming because I'll be going to a flight academy.

This is what I do. When I fly airliners I fly the jet to cruise put the A/P on and either boot up my PS3 or do homework if I have any then when I get about 50 miles from the top of descent I get ready and fly the descent. Try GA flying its a lot more action packed so to speak try this VA I fly for them when I get tired of flying airliners they have a ton of routes and its all fun flying into small airports in anything from a Piper Saratoga to a 737NG what nice about Mirage is you get to see so many new places and find the true gems of the FS world I'm based at KRNT so all my flying is in ORBX FTX regions which makes it all the better Mirage serves alot of the ORBX payware airports aswell. http://www.miragechartersva.com/

Thanks, that was the answer I was trying to get.

Im incredibly new to the forums, but i felt the same way. As of a week ago i started flying GA using the program fseconomy. I highly recommend it!    http://www.fseconomy.net

Unless you are a airliner nerd  and want to know everything there is to know about a particular aircraft (that's how those guys have fun), stay away from complex airliner simulation.  Aside from the planning, push buttons at the start and monitoring the machinery the flight is kinda boring.  I am having some fun by just hop into a good GA enjoy the scenery and weather and do a visual landing.  Short and sweet!

I am kinda tired of flying airliner as well, too much work for me, and it does feel like, well work.  People have to be on air planes to go somewhere, and most of the time, people just wish the flight to be as short as possible.  Another factor with airliner is that you have the urge to fly an actual route by an actual airline, another work like schedule

May be try your hand at a biz jet like a Cessna Mustang or Cessna Citation X, then feel free to chart your own route anywhere.  I found the Flight 1 Mustang to be fun to fly.

There is a reason why commercial pilots don't fly airliner in their spare time! Pick up the A2A Cub and feel your hand controlling the airplane rather than push or turn buttons and knobs.

And if you have no fun any more, don't feel bad, find something else to do, come back when your interest is back.

Good luck!

I suppose if one stuck to one small corner of the entire expanse that we have simulated, that they'd eventually get bored.  I don't have the NGX, since it's not really my thing, but from all accounts it's not a terribly difficult aircraft to fly.  Well crafted, a work of love to be sure, but decades of engineering have went into ensuring that the real world NGX does it's job as efficiently and easily as possible, and this of course carries through to the sim.

Luckily, there are so many different types of aviation to experience within FSX that you'd have to be independently wealthy to enjoy it all; for the dual reasons of being able to afford all of the possible addon aircraft, to not having the work so as to have the time to enjoy it all.

Myself, I never get bored in the sim, since I enjoy so many different areas of simulation that I don't nearly have enough time to partake in it all.  Instead, I end up having to pick a type and stick with it for a few months at a time.

Currently, I'm finding excitement in trying to muzzle the raw power present in Aerosoft's recent Lightning release, and finding out just how challenging landings are in something that doesn't really want to land gracefully, in a region where the real world weather that ASN keeps throwing at me darn near keeps me from seeing where I'm supposed to land. :O

Before that, I was taking the comparatively civilized Superbug from VRS and tossing it at a moving tiny strip of ship in the middle of the ocean, in the dark...  Try that, along with the excellent freeware vLSO addon, and I guarantee a complete lack of boredom!

Before that, I was dong some short runs in the superlative MJC Q400.  Short runs in a 'busy' plane like the Q400 also ensure a lack of boredom; you simply don't have time to be bored!

Before that... well you get the idea!! The point is, there's far too much stuff inside this simulated globe we play with for me to ever get bored!!
