I cannot wait to see FSX Stream Launched. It is going be hilarious when all the newbies show up on this forum looking for help getting it to run properly and see their reactions when they get the replies. Well first of all you need to dump that high end Alienware PC you've got and go build your own. You're going to need an i7 4970K to start and don't forget to turn hyper threading off! What? you have a Radeon Card? No that won't do you'll have to go get yourself a GTX 780ti. Oh, what? it doesn't look like the videos on YouTube. Yea your going to need at least $1000 worth of Addons before it will even start to look like that:-) Oh you have to move all those sliders to the left and remove all the graphical details to get over 30fps. And don't forget to go study so you can become an expert overclocker. And as a bonus to Enjoying FSX you get to be on the Futuremark 3DMark06 Hall of fame! Oh and by the way make sure its not installed on the C Drive. Best to go get yourself a dedicated SSD and don't put anything else on it:-)

It's going to be flippin hilarious.

I had the same thought! :LMAO:

Exaggerating much? With your description you'd have to wonder how FSX survived since 2006 since none of what you described existed for at least 6 years of FSX's lifespan.

And if they come here for help. They'll get it..

I would say I'm not exaggerating at all. Sure plenty of them will come here and get help and I will be happy to help any I can but I am sure the vast vast majority of them won't be interested in the help or FSX after they find out what is involved. Is DT going to tell potential buyers what to expect before they buy it? No they are not! They are going to paint a rosy picture of it for the unsuspecting and uninitiated. Have you ever seen a product on Steam that had a money back guarantee. Do you remember the spin MS put on it. "The computer to run this software hasn't been invented yet". No not exaggerating just wait and see the posts from the newbies after they find out the truth. The Janitor will be working overtime and the bad language blocker will be overloaded.

And that's a great point. We accept an awful lot of nonsense to be in this hobby: Bugs and crashes and requirements that are often at the very edge of preposterous, yet we sit still for all of it for the sake of passion.

Now, here you have a company like DTG, and some bugs here and there (much less than we already readily accept) and suddenly we are looking at a horrible, blood-sucking greed-monster of an organization.

(They have EA execs!! Case closed!!)

How many times have I had certain softwares (which shall be nameless) crash, cause stutters, graphical glitches, corruption and more on my FSX installation? How many times have I seen threads about poor customer service? How many times have I seen partisans of one company or another jump into the fray to defend the honor of their chosen one?

You would think we've have been living in some golden era of flighty nirvana, when in fact companies are companies are companies.

Some are fly by night, some make mistakes, and most aren't perfect. Yet I have faith that most want to produce a good product.

I can see no reasonable evidence that DTG are more nefarious than companies we deal with every day. Some, in fact much of their stuff is damn nice, and I've wondered more than once how much some of our favorite Flight sim companies would charge for DLC of equivalent detail and quality. I actually don't really see all that much real difference in costs, especially given the frequent steam sales. And I keep firmly in mind all the times I have seen people proudly brag about the thousands of dollars they have spent on third party items, otherwise known as DLC.

So why the Furor about similarly priced DLC from DTG?

In the end, some of the wailing going on seems not only a tad premature, but more a little overdone as well.

That Amtrak engine was released with a mess of huge bugs that were never fixed.. Notice how long after he released the brakes until it finally moved? Soooo sooo wrong. They also go to full service in any position. Sooo soo wrong.  That's not how brakes operate.. A user had to fix them because DTG won't fix them because the scenarios were written before the engine was finished being beta tested. If they change any physics of the engine it would possibly break the scenarios.  Hence half the stuff they have is bugged and never fixed.

And that's a problem, but nothing that you can't find an equivalent of in flightsims. (witness the endless debates about the veracity of various flight models, weather engines and just about anything else on the various forums)

The simple fact, much as enthusiasts don't like it, is that the vast majority of human beings are not going to choke on their coffee about something like that. Even multi-million-dollar commercial simulators have their quirks, and the endless quest for absolute perfection is simply too expensive. I suspect its killed more than a few sims, and I keep in mind something once said on the Aerosoft forums about planes sometimes being built deliberately inaccurately (wing flex and etc) because even hardcore simmers liked it that way.

I expect a reasonable amount of realism: hopefully even a high level. But if I want more, I had best be ready and willing to pay PMDG level prices for it.

Dave,

Where do you come up with the stuff you have been posting in this whole thread? Over the years I've followed a lot of wild trains of thought, but I don't think I have ever seen a series of posts that contain so many left-field, out in space, off the wall, scratching my head, huh, did he just post that?, posts as I have read from you!

If AVSIM still had an Awards System I surely would nominate you for one of them!! And I think you would win!

But here is the difference. Those Amtrak engines are virtually unusable. The engines are the core of the product for the Surfliner route, apart from the route itself, the major flaw with the engines makes the route only good for screen shots.

Imagine an addon airport for FSX that has not got a runway.

I did not know about the user fix until Bill told me in this thread, so how many others do no know. Pacific Surfliner route is very popular amongst train simmers, it is to them what KLAX is to us. Do you still think that DTG deserve a bouquet, or a brick bat ?

I bet their ears are burning!!!

I think its quite simple: If it was that bad, people wouldn't buy it. If they don't buy it, DTG loses money. If DTG loses enough money, They shrink or maybe go out of business. Since they are in fact expanding rapidly, what is it that we might be missing?

128 miles of ultra detailed track, scenery, and a train. Priced for as low as $16

And we are outraged.

Meanwhile, if you look at threads regarding "problems" it looks like just about any avsim thread where people are trying to hash out an issue. http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3195206

Not exactly the easiest thing to find.

Anyway.. I'm not going to press this issue. I see the topic is now being monitored which is a sure fire sign the discussion is getting redundant.  The warnings are out there about DTG and not just from random guessing.. From factual experience.. Spend your money wisely and don't accept mediocrity just because you have no where else to go.. DTG bank on that with TS2014 as it is.. Again.. The people who spend the most money on that game are their biggest critics and complainers.. Because.. Where else are they going to go?

That is fine, but how does a prospective buyer find out ? Unless he is FB  and forum savvy, a new purchaser would never know.

Thanks Bill. It was not easy to find. Just like a new user would have trouble finding it. But as you said, time to depart from this thread, I think it has passed it's sell by date.

I was a new buyer once and I read reviews. My money is too valuable to squander.

In fact I read multiple reviews, watch Youtube vidoes (any new DLC leads to an almost instant explosion of videos) and haunt forums. If I don't do that and purchase a dud, then its partially my fault for not doing due diligence.

And if I'm simply too eager to avoid buying on day one, well...... Then I know I'm taking a risk.

I've purchased Flightsim duds before, especially in my early days, and how many of us have drives full of stuff we never use? I never returned even one of them. I considered those mistakes as lessons learned about being careful.

I assume when DTG reveals its goals I'll have a similar choice about whether to jump or wait for others to be the guinea pig.

I'll keep my eyes open, listen without prejudice, and make up my own mind.

As long as Dovetail doesn't restrict other companies from releasing addons, I see this as a positive. They can help fix some of the problems with the fsx foundation or worse comes to worse do nothing valuable and we still have fsx with all the great addons.

Robert Stein

They can help fix some of the problems with the fsx foundation

Guys, they're not doing anything to fix FSX's bugs.

Again, I quote this article: http://www.gamespot.com/articles/microsoft-flight-simulator-series-to-live-on-but-n/1100-6421000/

Update: Unfortunately, it doesn't sound as if the Steam Edition of Flight Simulator X will feature any improvements. Dovetail told GameSpot, "We have the license to re-release FSX on Steam and this does not extend to making product improvements. However, we will include all possible bug fixes we can. One area that will require some work is the use that FSX made use of GameSpy for multiplayer features. As you may know, GameSpy is no longer available and so we are looking for alternate ways of providing this functionality including using features in Steam."
