Need help installing FSX on a different drive than operating system

Featured Replies

I need some help. I have tried installing FSX on my e:/ drive following the advice of Nick's bible for FSX. I have studied this topic for weeks. I am able to load FSX into the e:/drive. I boad the default flight and fly a few minutes, then exit FSX and reboot the computer. I then try and to install the accelerator disk I get the message I need the English version of FSX. I then try to unistall the FSX from the e:/drive using bothe the uninstall command from within the control panel and the system freezes up. I then tried to unistall or repair using the FSX installation disks with no success. So I decided to reinstall my windows operating system of Windows 8.1. Tried again to install FSX into my e:/drive and go a 1603 or or 1623 error code. Can't remeber for sure which one it was. So I reloaded my operating system again and got the same message about missing the English version when trying to install accelerator. I have seen another post about installing FSX into the c:/drive using the path c:/Program Files/X86/Microsoft Games/Microsoft Flight Simulator X and then after its loaded copy the file to e:/Program Files/x86/Microsoft Games/Microsoft Flight Simulator X. Then you rename the file on the c:/drive. After that you then enter a command that instructs the computer to redirect to the e:/drive for the program. I have not tried this yet but it appears to make sense to me with two exceptions. In Nicks Bible for FSX he is adament not to install FSX into the Program Files folder. Additionally he is adament about not copying FSX to another drive but rather do an install to the new (other drive). But his method has not worked for me.If anyone here has had any success with these methods could you please comment and stell the the actual steps you took, including the actual keystrokes(i.e. commands) that you used to accomplish this. Lastly do youthink if I loaded FSX into the C:/drive using c:/FSX and then copied into the other drive in e:/FSX using the redirect method, would this work. If it does when I go to load addons that typically default to the c:/Program Folder/x86/Microsoft Games/Microsoft Flight Simulator X would they then redirect to the e:/FSX or would the files in each drive have to be the same? Thanks for any advice you can give.

There are times when I wish Nicks guide would disappear, every time I see a post like this one. FSX will run just fine in it's default location, period. All you might need to do is disable user access control during installs, or leave it off altogether if you dont have concerns about  someone in the house installing other stuff to your computer.

Install FSX with it's default path, get a good anti virus program, there are tons of free ones that work well, and go fly, it's just that simple.

This is a bit confusing... What I did was...

Dropped my UAC slider right down..

Installed FSX into default directory

Installed Acceleration into default diretory

Ran as Admin..

All perfect!!

I have done this with FS9 - 2x installes, FSX, & P3D... many times

No problems at all!

I think that there is a lot of rubbish written out there, appologies if I offend, but my experience has been perfect with installations into default directories after UAC dropped right down.

Try it yourself. If it does not work, which I doubt, try again!

Good luck.

Robin

Thanks. I agree that it works fine if installed in default locations with UAC disabled. As to Nick's advice i can tell you I followed his advice to the letter  building my new computer and i am ecstatic with the results so i find him to be knowlegable and credible related to his advice on the build. So i wanted to follow the rest of his advice and test for myself as there are plenty of people both on FSX and P3d who have experienced improved performance putting The operating system on a separate drive from the simulator software, especially if you put the simulator software on a SSD. After spending $3500 on my build i would like to at least like to try this approach. Thanks for the replys though. Very much appreciated.

Understand that if you do install to a different location, then every addon after that you install will have to be pointed to that location, a real PITA if you ask me! :-)

If you spend $3500 on a sim puter, I wouldnt be worrying about performance!

But that's the reason I did spend that much on the computer, to get the best performance I can get. If the hardware I have is the best that it can be at this time, I don't want my method of installation slowing down my performance when I have spent so much building the best rig foor FSX/P3d.

This is an excellent guide and it worked for me ;)
Even though I work in I.T, and have used FS since 1998, I still follow this guide exactly.

System specs: Windows 11  Pro 64-bit, Ubuntu Linux 20.04 i7-13700KF  Gigabyte Z790 RTX-4060-Ti , 32GB RAM  1X 2TB M2 for X-Plane 12,  1x256GB SSD for OS. 1TB drive MSFS2020

After you install FSX and Acceleration on the C: drive, you can copy the entire Flight Simulator X folder to your e: drive and it will work just fine.

Just run the Flight1 Registry fixer afterwards and set FSX to it's new E: location.

Once you've confirmed it is working, delete the FSX folder on the C: drive.

Thanks Bert. Will give that a try

Holy f..... something, is it really that difficult to install FSX and go flying?

Do what ever you want, install default or anywhere else, NickN only gave his advise in "Da Bible" and I really don´t like that name and many other things, but ##### he build the spaceshuttle with his two bare hands in the garage in Seattle,  so let´s honor the brave man, even if he´s an arrogant rude gentleman most of the time.

LOL !!! That made my day!

Bert,

Thanks a lot for the link. I installed FSX into c:/FSX and then copied to e:/FSX and ran the Flight One Registry Fixer. Everything worked like a champ. I then installed Real Air's Turbo Beech Duke. That software gave me the option of choosing the e drive or the e drive for the install. However there is an update, and it doesn't give a choice so I am not sure which drive it went too.

Happy it is working for you!

If you are not sure - you can always look

.. and copy if required.

Install Windows onto your fastest drive. Make yourself a regular user and install FSX into the default location on that drive. However, before installing any addons add permissions to the FSX program folder. Add write and modify permissions to the Users group and allow to set on subfolders. Saves running as Admin, changing UAC settings, making folders on other drives, taking ownership, installing addons into non default locations etc. If a large portion of scenery or a large collection of aircraft need be moved to other drives, they can be moved to custom folders on other drives and referenced by the fsx.cfg. Here I've done the same thing with Prepar3D before adding any other stuff, for a professional installation.

Face it; here you run into a bump in the road, haven't hardly even started!

I never installed FSX in its default location and never had any problems. Of course, anyone who has any knowledge of computers will turn that nasty UAC off immediately. It will always slow things down.

Best regards, Steffen
