September 16, 201411 yr Doom and gloom averted again thanks to the shader language ... don't forget to delete your shaders folder after making the edit. I have seen this issue in one or two of my flights, but it's not "always" an issue ... unfortunately I can't consistently replicate but I think "time of day" seems to be involved. If you look at a video I made here at the 14:09 mark the clouds look correct, but in the same flight about 3 hours later at the 21:53 mark the cloud shading does NOT appear to be correct. I'll make this change and do some time spot checking to see how the clouds may or may not change. Would be interesting to know what cloud textures everyone is using. Big thanks to LM for coming up with a possible adjustment. Would be good to know how the changes are working for everyone? Cheers, Rob.
September 16, 201411 yr I agree with LM - They just dont look right with this edit - so I reverted it back - this being said it was with P3D factory clouds might be different with others such as REX - have not checked that out yet - Hi Rob seems like that airbus tut has paid off - well done on this video Rich Sennett
September 17, 201411 yr Hello fliers, does anyone know how to open a .fx file? Tried to open cloud.fx and windows would not let me? Right clicked to try to open in notepad but that was not an option. Regards Lamar Wright
September 17, 201411 yr Hi Rob seems like that airbus tut has paid off Would that be YOUR Airbus tut Rich? I'll experiment with some other cloud textures and time of day and see what I come up with ... so many changes in shader files lately it's hard to determine the relative impacts to the visuals. Cheers, Rob. Hello fliers, does anyone know how to open a .fx file? Tried to open cloud.fx and windows would not let me? Right clicked to try to open in notepad but that was not an option. 1. Open Notepad first -- Windows "Start" icon, type "Notepad" in the search and hit enter. 2. In Notepad -- File | Open | make sure it says *.* and not *.txt in file type drop down 3. Navigate to you ShadersHLSL folder (i.e. V:\Lockheed Martin\Prepar3D v2\ShadersHLSL) and select Cloud.fx 4. Made edit and save the file NOTE: make sure you have Word Wrap turned OFF in Notepad. Cheers, Rob.

September 18, 201411 yr It's a keep'er for me.- I am using the REX Direct textures and it added in the nice contracts between the light and dark again.
September 18, 201411 yr This looks very interesting. Noticed my HDE clouds looking a bit shade-less last night. Are any of you getting an FPS hit after changing the cloud.fx file? September 19, 201411 yr Author Seems an improvement but it's still a little bland in places it could be a little more dramatic, the contrast and hues that is. Just my opinion... September 19, 201411 yr I agree. Me too... P3D looks grey and dull as soon as the sun sinks low; unrealistly so. Clouds are pretty much flat grey, and there is next to no lighting on the terrain. FSX/P3D1.x looks far better in this regard.
September 19, 201411 yr Put the fix in cloud.fx last night. I do prefer the extra contrast it gives with just a small FPS hit as far as I can tell. As others have commented V2.3 weather does still look rather bleached out. Chillblast Core i5 14600KF Liquid Cooled RTX 4070 SUPER 32GB RAM. Internet: 1 Gig Fibre. HoneyComb Throttle & Flight System. September 19, 201411 yr Can someone check their P3D install to check this is right?.... comparing the same save point in FSX and P3D gives this below. Where is my sunset?... I'm sure [well I know, and have screens to prove it] things didn't look quite so dull before, so I wonder if there is something wrong my end... or have LM screwed-up?. Time 'Dusk' minus around 30mins - Season 'Fall' I've set up other flights around dusk and they are all the same... dull!.?? FSX P3Dv2.3
September 19, 201411 yr Commercial Member To do a comparison you'd need to have the same sky textures installed in both sims, there's a row of pixels along the top of each sky texture that controls the cloud colors among other things. Mine's just the opposite, my FSX looks like your P3D2 shot and vice versa. Jim
