Will improvment ever arrive?

Featured Replies

I hear you, but "64 bit code", "as tight as etc" to me sound like solutions, looking for a problem to solve.

Some of us, and I count myself in this group, never see an OOM, or glitches worth mentioning, but do have some amazingly realistic airplanes to fly, over some amazingly realistic scenery.. and get to experience the sensation of flight, GA or airliner, your choice..

I still have not seen the "promised land" that might be possible.. that would give me a more realistic sense of "being there"..  Looking at the GTA trailer, all I see is a "cartoonish fantasy world"..  Sorry..

Its all a matter of taste, and what you are use too of course. I have seen it said several times that FSX and particularly ORBX scenery is cartoonish. I both agree and disagree, looking at the issue from different perspectives. But I would submit that GTA is certainly no more cartoonish that FSX itself.

On another tack, after experiencing the admittedly incomplete world of Outerra, I find the crazy-quilt pattern of repeating and often mismatched "tiles" that constitutes FSX and P3D scenery to be right on the edge of toleration at this point.

So much better is on the horizon.

While civilian flight remains stagnant, other genres move forward, offering new experiences in new ways, expanding even as we cannibalize the past. And this is far from the best that can be done.

I once thought that X-plane might lead the way, but LR seems loathe to pursue its advantages with any sort of aggression, and it seems we must look elsewhere for the "Future"

You have absolutely nothing to prove that they can deliver any better flight simulation than everybody else.

Is that Outtera?

BTW. I found this: GTA stunting -with full damage modelling on both plane and all objects.  (Note the water strike at 2:04)

Yup that's Outerra.

Thanks.  Got a video?

Meanwhile, here's a short video of a 'cooling' casual flight, plus another 'flight' video from that GTA stunt-woman...

Outerra is still very much beta, only 2 guys programming originally (thats changed!) but I hope the potential is evident...........

Outerra is very nice, great technology and I can see potential when this could deliver an awesome flighsim platform.

These guys seem to have right recipe how to revolutionize world-wide scenery creation.

However their goals are so fuzzy, little happens for whole years that I have my doubts whether it ever comes to some fligtsim fruition.

Essentially, they need investment/cash. Hopefully the recent reveal of TitanIM, and the influx of some tasty military money as well as the recent hiring of more employees will set things into faster motion both for military and nonmilitary uses..

Nice, gta V looks like got virtual cockpits this will be good long term for another option for simmers.  Look at gta V online has the feel of Los Angeles actually down pretty good looks like 4 airfields this is taste of what the future holds for treetop flyers.  Landing in water is dangerous on the ocean sharks do get hungry. $265 million to build the game wow, that something impressive and get $800 million in revenue that good recoup on investment so far I am buy gta V when it comes out on pc as, I know will see plane mods and added airfields.

I have to agree with TooWings and HF. The sheer immersion that today's technology can provide would be mind blowing if they were made in a modern flight sim.

When comparing GTA5 to FSX (or any other flight sim) it's not an apples to apples comparison. Much like the "future of Outerra" thread, it's merely a glimpse of what CAN be done. Try not to be fixated on the controversy of said game, but look at the possibilities for a future flight sim.

It makes me wonder what  $265 million would look like if it was a sim... Could we get 64 bit, the whole planet, people (scripted to do their own tasks), cars, working traffic lights, boats, police, and several other things? (GTA has the previous list covered except for the planet and I'm not sure about 64 bit) FSX already has realistic star placement. It would be the holy grail of sims...  Simply put: This level of immersion can, and to an extent, HAS been done.

However, (insert cold face full of water) when would they ever turn a profit?

The fact remains we, as flight simmers, as settling for whatever we can get. We all have a list of requirements and go to the sim that meets the most of them. In my opinion, the point of threads like these, are to show what we could have (better graphics, more realism; in short more immersion).  FSX may have been released in 2006, but when was that rendering engine made? (I'm guessing 10+ years at this time) So when any attempt at a new flight sim shows up, instead of being the "get off my lawn" type of guy, let's be the "embrace change" type of folks. Unless, of course, you have $265,000,000 floating around...

Here's what is happening in the industrial side of flight simulation here and now, though the cost of admission is 10's of $1000's for the software/hardware.  This stuff makes P3D look like a toy.  Software: http://www.diamondvisionics.com/index.php/products/genesis-rtx/ and hardware: http://real-time.ccur.com/docs/default-source/data-sheets/imagen-brochure.pdf?sfvrsn=6

Hi Skew.  Your comment echoes my sentiments totally, in particular your point about future flightsims being more immersive.  As you're obviously aware, I'm not anti-MSFS (having used it  for over 15 years) but rather I've simply been posting these GTA videos as just one example of that 'immersive and interactive 'real-world' feel.

..In fact, as you may know, those videos don't really do GTA justice as they fail to fully convey the 'barn storming' feeling of actually 'being there' in that vibrant 'living world' with its ambience and its hazards. i.e. crash detection & damage modelling etc bring a sobering focus while flying etc (for many GTA fliers anyway ;-).

I of course acknowledge the success of MSFS -as well as the current console/arcade limitations of GTA - but with the PC version out soon, and with future version yet to come, we can  predict more immersive and fun flying for short flights and copter hops, and perhaps for 'full-world' flightsims of the future.

I found these two videos which give another little taste of that immersive factor.....

I'm not sure about added added airfields Giz, but plenty mods in due course. Plus the ability to bypass the intro 'shooter' missions if, like me, you aren't into missions.

Enjoy anyway.

But...... Whats the Framerate?

I'm not sure. But I do know that the mainframe server needs to be updated every few billion years ;-)
