I was just about to buy a Samsung 4K curved screen but read a lot of forum articles about not being able to get 4:4:4 color at 60Hz from that TV even with a Nvidia 980 - it is the limitation of the TV itself. It appears that we must be sure that we have HDMI 2.0 cables as well. I realize that using a monitor is a different issue, but I just wanted to make sure that others who are considering 4K TVs make sure that someone else has successfully made it work with full color at 60Hz.

You are right, I ended up swapping mine as my first choice didn't display 444 even though I was told it would display 4k at 60hz from a pc. It seems we are a niche market and most sales people don't have the first clue once you get technical to this level. Pay to really dig on the Internet until you can find confirmation.

Chris

What is "4:4:4 color at 60Hz"?

regards,

Dick near Pittsburgh, USA

It's the level of digital compression ... where 4:4:4 is better than 4:2:0 ... colors will look "washed" out at 4:2:0.

Cheers, Rob.

@tutmeister,

    We need to make an informal list of which 4K TVs have 4:4:4@60Hz (not only needed for FSX/P3D but also for text windows, etc.)

    What set did you finally buy?

Thanks

WRT 4K TVs that work with Nvidia 900 series cards for 4:4:4@60Hz see the following URL:   (only a few!)

EDIT: I think the above link from MartinRex007 is better

RGB at 30Hz on my Sony works great for me ... for flight simulation I honestly don't need 60Hz.  Even for combat aircraft, I'll blackout long before I can keep that hard G turn going where 60Hz might help? :)

For twitch games, sure, you'll want 60Hz.

Cheers, Rob.

Hi,

I am a new member of the 4K family. Today, I got a LG 31MU97-B (31", 17:9). I am running P3D2.4 at 4096x2016 at 60 Hz (Dispaly Port), with frames of 30-40. The area, I am flying in, is Europe, with all the ORBX stuff. I must say, it is a completely new visual experience. Especially when flying low and slow. I am absolutely happy.

Welcome Bruno ... 4K does have to manipulate a lot of pixels ...

But don't get too settled just yet ... 8K TVs are going to be released to the market this year http://www.extremetech.com/gaming/196011-lg-readies-55-inch-8k-tv-and-new-quantum-dot-4k-display-technology ... we're entering some great times for Flight Simulation enthusiasts.  I'm pretty sure I will not need to use any AA for a 55" 8K monitor.

Cheers, Rob.

hello , I'm looking at using a 40in 4K as a monitor to my future GTX 980. Any word on what TV would current support  4K@60Hz with 4:4:4 ? Some rumours are saying that a new firmware update might have made the Samsung (such as the 40HU6900) functional. Does anyone managed to get hard evidence ?

Best

Karim

Regarding large ( at least 40 in) 4K monitors, the magazine Maximum PC had an article on a Philips 40 inch 4K monitor for $850 USD. It uses a Display Port interface so I would assume that it will provide 4:4:4@60Hz

I'm using the Philips 40" for P3Dv2 - its EPIC!

@Gordon,

"I'm using the Philips 40" for P3Dv2 - its EPIC!"

Could you provide any more details - and I imagine you are driving it with an NV970 or 980? Could you make a quick measurement and tell us all the difference in FPS between 4K  resolution and 1920x1080 at the same saved flight position.

Yeah I can do that. I will post back results tomorrow (Saturday evening UK time).

I use a GTX780 to drive the panel due to its 384-bit memory bus - GTX970 & 980 only have a 256-bit memory bus which can cause texture compression issues at very high resolutions. Hoping Nvidia's next round of GPU's based on the "Full Maxwell" core will be more suited for 4K.

If its any help I used to run P3Dv2 and FSX on a 1440p monitor and as a general performance indicator I see roughly 10%-20% drop (depending on settings and sim conditions) in FPS going from 1440p to 4K.

Whilst that may sound like alot, but if I was getting 45FPS @ 1440p I would now be getting 35-40FPS @ 4K. Still very flyable in all situations. I tune my sim settings to NEVER dip below 25FPS,I simply wont fly if I cant achieve minimum 25FPS.
