February 5, 201511 yr The GSkill ram should do well, AFAIK it's the best for OCing, as of 2 years ago. 32GB should be purchased at the same time in one batch (just thnking now about harmonics, each batch may have different harmonic characteristics? that's stretching a bit though). The reason why 32bit is "unstable" is because it adds more work to the I/O unit again, both in the CPU and on the board, causing more heat, possibly needing more power. I haven't had an issue on the surface, but maybe it is what prevents me from getting to 5ghz. When the primary thread is bottlenecked on core 1, that extra speed might be what clears it. I remember back in FSX people swearing 4.5 was the bottleneck breaker. This gives another reason to have moar faster RAM. But what is nice about the extra RAM is I put it into a RAM caching program, Primocache, which cuts my loading times down to seconds. And it may be another reason why I have no texture loading issues. I thought I wouldn't need 6 cores, but sometimes now I regret getting them, it may be why I still get some micro-stutter at 5760 and you're not at 1/3 more real estate than that. But I'm running at 4.4 now, which is frustrating, I want that <10% to 4.8 back! But I still blame NVidia, and even more so MS. I am very curious how your 8 tiny cores pull. February 6, 201511 yr So I was just reading up on Skylake, and one of the big changes is they've dropped the power and I/O controller they introduced in Haswell, which means it was a failure? Probably because it does causes and entangles heat issues on the chip from other devices on the board. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skylake_(microarchitecture) The major expected changes between the Haswell and Skylake architectures include the abandonment and removal of the fully integrated voltage regulator (FIVR) introduced with Haswell,[8] and the integration of the Platform Controller Hub (PCH) onto the die for Skylake's H, U and Y variants, effectively following a system-on-chip (SoC) design layout. The S variant will remain a two-chip design. On the variants that will use the PCH, Direct Media Interface (DMI) 2.0 will be replaced by DMI 3.0, which promises speeds of up to 8 GT/s. I don't see anything on that page that promises any help for P3D.. The lower power requirement on your chip choice is the only advantage currently over previous chip vintages. I think we are left waiting for Win10/DX12 and NVidia to put a little P3D magic in their cauldron. February 6, 201511 yr I don't see anything on that page that promises any help for P3D.. PCIe 4.0 ... it'll be needed with nVidia's GPUs coming out end of this year or next year. AVX 3.2 instructions - this will be significant, but of course requires coding for and compiling for - aren't you Glad LM can do that uninhibited 14nm might promise for higher OC if Intel doesn't just shrink to fit rather shrink to perform Cheers, Rob.
February 6, 201511 yr I also thinking about a new system based on a ASUS Rampage V Extreme. Still hesitating between an i7 5960X and the 5930K. I'll be running a less sophisticated OC than Rob's . Which one would you recommend ? I am using mostly P3D and DCS. Also what GPU would be the best ? My output will be a 4k monitor. Best Karim
February 6, 201511 yr My output will be a 4k monitor. In that case, toss as much hardware as you can at it ... I'll let you know how the 5960X goes and if it was worth the effort (can't really recommend anything until I've done it) ... I just need to make time to assemble and OC (easy part) ... loading OS and installing my development environment (Visual Studio, SQL, Office, Adobe, Sonar, TFS configuration, etc. etc. etc.) is the part I don't like (that's a 3-4 day job if all goes well) then about 1/2 day to install all my P3D add-ons (easy part). GPU for 4K I'd opt for a 980 4GB or Titan Black. Cheers, Rob.
February 6, 201511 yr Good luck building the new system ! win7 or 8.1 ? I'll stay with Win7 ... will migrate to Win10 when it hits RTM. I'm looking forward to see what the 5960 will bring to the party I'm hoping I can find the correct OC/RAM timing balance to bring it to life ... we shall see ... goal is 10% gain over my 3960X. I'll be selling my 3960X 6/12 core with Asus Rampage motherboard, 32GB DDR3 2133Mhz RAM, Corsair H100, and 4 256GB SSD (that are sitting around doing nothing) -- if anyone is interested let me know. Cheers, Rob.
February 7, 201511 yr Hi Karim, It's a Coolmaster HAF 932. (supports E-ATX motherboards) Cheers, Rob.
February 7, 201511 yr What is your opinion of this as a CPU cooler? Corsair Hydro Series H110i GT High Performance Water/Liquid CPU Cooler. 280mm http://www.corsair.com/en-us/hydro-series-h110i-gt-280mm-extreme-performance-liquid-cpu-cooler Russ
February 7, 201511 yr I'll probably go with the coolmaster HAF X I have been using this case for the past 4 years, and have no plans on changing it. It isn't the prettiest, and it is a beast as far as size goes, but it provides excellent cooling. Very easy to work on, and has lots of options for cooling. With a drill and/or a dremel, you could easily fit a pair of 360 rads in this. I am currently running an i7 5930k @ 4.3 Ghz with a Corsair H100i 4x 120mm fans in push/pull, without any issues. My bottom line; an excellent case. Jazz
February 7, 201511 yr Hey jazz, my last build also used the HAF X. Love it. Like you, I'll be using a H110i in push/pull config. what GPU are you using ? Regards Karim
February 7, 201511 yr what GPU are you using ? An EVGA GTX980 SC w/ ACX 2.0. I have added a slightly higher oc @ 1400Mhz. This thing rocks P3D. Jazz
