What do Mac users miss out on with XP... ?

However you see it (Crack, hack, etc..), it's still EULA busting, which is against the rules

Piracy, Key Sharing, Link Sharing, EULA Busting, etc.: Any message, post or topic heading that appears to advocate or perpetuates piracy, shares cracked software, links to or other like material, advocates avoidance of or contravening of End User License Agreements (EULAs) or can be interpreted as approval of piracy or EULA "busting", will be immediately removed and the poster banned. Piracy of software destroys the basis of our hobby and AVSIM enforces anti-piracy policies strictly. If you are a pirate, advocate piracy, or use pirated material, do not register. We place EULA busting in the same category.

..and from Apple's EULA for OS X

The grants set forth in this License do not permit you to, and you agree not to, install, use or run the Apple Software on any non-Apple-branded computer, or to enable others to do so.

For me, this is one personal (and perhaps irrational) reason I avoid Apple products, in addition to the price.  Apple has always been overly aggressive in maintaining proprietary control of its computers, components, peripherals and software.  While this helps insure that casual users do not have to worry about component and software compatibility, it also has its disadvantages.  I prefer the open working space and wide component availability of working with PCs and the universal availability of all but a very few specialized applications.  The proliferation of PCs in use is the reason many desirable plug-ins are created for Windows by PC programmers - which, going back to the original topic, is one of the things Mac owners miss out on.  The PCs also seem to run X-Plane better than comparable Macs, and the Windows 8 OS, regardless of how you judge the UI, has never crashed on my new desktop or my two laptops and seems to run XP slightly better than Win 7.

Does everybody agree that, apart from some of the surrounding tools (which were mentioned before), there isn't much to lose when running X-Plane on OSX?

I think this speaks for the sim itself and the attitude of the devs really wanting to keep multiple platforms (read: OS) in active support as opposed to just sticking to Windows.

Hackintosh is what even keeps me using OS X at all actually.

Barefeats.com regularly updates performance metrics to show how wonderful Hacks are when your interests also include windows gaming. It's a joy to be able to upgrade parts (especially GPU) and keep the same machine on the cutting edge for a long time.

Like many people I use other entertainment software too so compatibilty remains an issue there. I tend to play general gaming titles on the PS4 as I find playing FPSs with keyboard/mouse hurts my wrists so that's fine.

As far as simulation is concerned the good news is that SCS recently brought out Euro Truck Simulator 2 for Mac, but my other favourite DTG's Train Sim 2015 remains Windows only for now. They are in the process of migrating it to the Unreal 4 engine, which I believe is much more portable platform-wise.

So who knows, maybe a few years down the line all my stuff will be available on Mac.

So, a question about those few addons for XPX that are Windows only.... if I was to run Parallels (or some other OSX application that enables me to run Windows inside OSX), would that work for coupling the Windows add-on to XPX running on OSX)? Or, would I need to run XPX inside of

parallels too to make use of the Windows-only add-on? (Note that I do not intend using Parallels for XPX, only asking if I would need to, to access the add-on while using OSX).

Thanks, Bruce.

I wouldn't bother, the performance is so bad that it's unusuable. If you have the disk space, then using bootcamp is a good option (I did this for FSX/P3D for many years).

Also, having a think, here are some other minor issues I had using Mac OS X for X-Plane:

- I bought a scenery which only included an .exe installer. I had to install it into the Windows demo of X-Plane and then copy the scenery over. Unzipping didn't work. Luckily this practice is very rare now.

- RC Simulations VFR UK photoscenery has a Java installer which wouldn't run on Mac OS X. No instructions were included with the DVD, and I can imagine this really annoying people who wouldn't know there way round this. (It turns out one you need Java 6 hidden away on Apple's website).

- I originally formatted my system with a case-sensitive file system. Don't :-), lots and lots of addons broke, including Skymaxx Pro, Dreamfoil's helicopters and the Saab.

- I can't run G2XPL without Windows.

- Obviously my favourite tools from Windows such as PFPX and Skydaemon won't run, and run very poorly using WINE.

Don't bother with Parallels or Wine if you're going to use Windows. Do a Boot Camp install and make full use of your Mac hardware.

Thanks tonywob and scambjet.... As I indicated I'm not looking to do this, more a question of whether I would have to do it to get Windows-only add-ons to work with XP on a Mac (other than use boot-camp or some other multi-boot device).

I do have several Windows machines including a laptop (portable) which I could run the Windows add-ons (such as RC4 and flight-planners) if they were networkable to the Mac..... more research to do I think.......

Thanks, Bruce.
