If you have the great scenery, and have noticed your mountains and rock outcroppings around the town of Sedona, are blunted, with rather blurry non-defined textures....you need to have a LOD_RADIUS setting of no less than 9.5 for the photo-real textures that were used, to coalesce, and come into focus.  

 

I had always used a setting of 6.5, figuring that was enough, as the default is 4.5.  

 

Nope....

 

9.5 is is from now on...for I have even better detail around the whole of Sedona...and man was I missing out with a setting of 6.5!  Try it...and watch the rock monuments come to detail..and life.  If you use the program SHADE, you are also in for a treat.

A lot of us were getting blunt monument tops around the airport, with very blurred textures. Jarrad stated that because he used photo-real on the mesh, that was a drawback of the graphics engine.  He recommended going to 9.5 for distance viewing, (he runs with that), and it truly worked.  When you are at the airport, you can see great detail from such as Cathedral Rock, etc.  Not only that...but (must be a quirk in the engine) as you fly around them, you now can view crags, and depth in the rock faces.  

 

I just viewed your P3D shots..(great by the way...!) and that is what I am now seeing in FSX:MS with a LOD of 9.5.  With a FSX LOD setting of 6.5, those very same monuments were horrible!  BTW, how high can you set the LOD in P3D?

Be cautious at that LOD, OOM territory in time especially in Orbx.

Like Ryan said, you have to be careful running such a high LOD. With basic aircraft like Carenado or Alabeo it might be fine, but you will certainly OOM in more complex aircraft. Of course if you don't ever intend to use those, then it's not so much of a worry... but if you ever get an OOM error you know the first thing to check.

LOD 7.5 is working fine here with P3D 2.4.....need to tread cautiously with higher settings as mentioned above. Each rig is different!

For my FSX setup,  I ran the range from 4.5 to 11.5.

The first really discernible improvement for me is at 8.5, and indeed it is better at 9.5, beyond that I couldn't see any more benefit.

I believe the max LOD using the slider in P3Dv2 is 6.5, while mid-range is 4.5. The ranges using the slider in P3Dv2 are: 2.5, 3.5, 4.5 (default - center), 5.5, 6.5.

I typically fly with FSX LOD=5.5,  but indeed,  in Sedona,  9.5 looks much better.

 

In other regions, that will get me killed with OOM errors, but Sedona, being in the middle of nowhere, seems to get away with it..

I, too, see a remarkable increase in graphic quality at KSEZ with a 9.5 LOD.

 

Big But: OOM shuts me down as soon as I try to fly the RA Turbo Duke2, with the F1GTN750. I'm running a 4770 at 4.5 with a 780 and 8Gb of Corsair Dominator platinum.

 

I have the sliders at ORBX settings. As soon as I move over from the safe flight, I get the OOM shutdown. 

 

The scenery is gorgeous at 6.5 LOD. That's where I'm keeping it for now and enjoy the hardware and settings where they are.

That what I normally have as my 'default' LOD in FSX...but with this, at the airport and such, the monument faces have the blunt, out-of focus texture faces. With that 8.5/9.5 they look darn good.  I can get away with this flying around KSEZ with the Carenado 377.  Anywhere else though...and like everybody else...will kiss the desktop sooner than later.  I can run at 6.5 till the cows come home at Palm Springs...in great focus.  Just weird, with Sedona.  I've read Jarrad's explanation for this, vs. his Palm Springs effort.  Love them both, and the man is a great talent.
