4K is VRAM hungry. I nearly max out my 780 3Gb running 2560x1440. It would definitely help at 4K and I would recommend it.  1080p, it's a waste of dough and for bragging rights.

I nearly pilled the trigger on exactly the same card, In the end I didn't bother as I didn't feel the gain would be worth the hassle.

Plus the 970's have an issue with memory above 3.5gb if you ever get into that last 500mb of memory your fps will go through the floor

Google and see.

To be honest I was thinking about the 970 for P3D but have given up on it for the time being. I just couldn't get a result I was happy with and my system is no slouch. I ventured into the world of X-Plane, downloaded some free HD mesh, airports and the new A330.

Currently enroute from Malaga to Gatwick, North East of Cordoba at FL370 and the mountains I am flying over .... I am stunned by this view. My GTX 780 handles the sim beautifully

I know where I'll be flying for the foreseeable future :)

Are you running 4k?

No I am running a 42 inch 1080P LED TV.

I guess that was the  point of the main question lol

Stick with the 780, I also run a 4K monitor and my 3Gb 780 handles it just fine.

The 970 would be a "side-grade" at best, the well documented 3.5Gb vram issue on the 970 along with the the smaller memory bus compared to the 780 just doesn't make it worth it for 4K

I have a 780ti and plan on getting the 980ti when available.  It should be a very noticeable boost.

I own two 780ti and waiting for the sli support. With one card running triple monitor setup, equal to 4k I'm ok with the NGX, ASN, Mega Airports etc.

Peter22 the only upgrade worthwhile for 4K is a TitanX, a 980 will show an improvement but insufficient to warrant the expense.

PM Rob Ainscough, or watch his videos on Y..Tub for confirmation.

I went with the 6GB 780.  So glad I did.  Getting great results with three 27" in surround.  Hovers at 30FPS for the most part.  All sliders pretty darn high.
