4.6 on that cpu is barely over stock. Put your foot on the gas.

Have to try 4.8 but thats enough for me - still dont think it will buy much in P3D

You might not notice it all that much in p3d, but it's free performance that won't hurt it.

I dont get this fear of cpu or gpu overheat. they have thermal protection for a reason.  monitor your temps on initial setup and run the burn tests.  your highly unlikely to burn out your cpu and prematurely kill it before it becomes outdated anyway.

Its more to do with the board its on.  My 2500k can easily be overclocked to 4.7 4.8 which is where i had it, but my board is crap. Probably poor voltage regs or a weak cap that is causing the issue not because CPU is prematurely dying.  They are labelled K for a reason, and Intel has large buffers in place to the rated temps.  Same goes for GPU's.  Visually watching for artifacts on the burn tests is a good indication, but p3d wont be running the GPU as hard and as constant as a GPU burntest anyhow.

Dear Sir...

I have just followed your advice concerning water cooling my GPU. The resultant explosion and blue flash has totally removed all of my hair, and the cats. Should I have used a bigger bucket?

Live and learn. I would have suggested the fishtank route for the ultimate-bang-for-the-buck...throw a couple of ice cubes in there for good measure. The goldfish don't mind.

Looks like he mistook "closed loop" for "open loop".

It was a kind of joke, Richard. I was implying that "open" loop was simply "pouring water into an open case"!

Got yah Chris - thanks for update Buddy  :) still this has been an amazing update cant believe how well its working but my monster case probably is not bad thing either

Haven't tried your GPU trick yet, hoping that the 980ti is all they say it is. I did finally break the 5.0 ghz barrier on the 4790k tho. The cooler master Nepton is a hell of a cooler and I highly recommend it.

Thanks Buddy - good luck with that 980 but that said do not think its going to beat out a Titan X - rob a bank and get one :)

Definitely won't spank a titan, but a bit cheaper. My bank robbing days are over, especially after jumping out of that 727 airstair. Interestingly enough, the 980ti is rumored to have the same processor with no deactivated cores, only difference will be half the vram. And you can get it non-reference from day 1!!
